Batman 1989 is a Bad Batman Movie. Watch the Batman Video Essay before you dislike, hopefully it's at least entertaining and informative. I love Michael Keaton Batman, and Jack Nicholson Joker, but those are both not accurate representations of the Batman and Joker characters. This is a Batman Video Essay, but I did not put Video Essay in the title, are you proud of me Dad? This is the follow up video essay to Spider-Man: Homecoming is a Bad SPIDER-MAN movie. Tim Burton really did add a lot to the Batman mythos, but HiTop Films personally thinks that Tim Burton may not understand Batman. COUPLE OF THINGS: I can't believe I have to clarify this, yet again. My OPINION is that Batman '89 is a bad BATMAN movie. Now that doesn't mean it is a bad movie, in fact it's a lot of fun and looks incredible, as I said countless times in the video. What being a bad Batman movie means to me, is that the film did not accurately portray the character of Bruce Wayne and what makes him tick. That is also just my OPINION, feel free to disagree, but maybe watch the video before you leave a lengthy comment telling me how wrong I am. To those of you who enjoyed the video and are sharing it, commenting, liking and donating to the Patreon, I cherish you guys, and I thank you endlessly for the support. These videos take a lot of time and a lot of effort, but you guys really do make it worth it.

Bob Blueford the fundamental core of Bruce Wayne is that he doesn’t kill and it’s why I hate Batfleck so much (not I repeat Ben he’s a fantastic actor he is awesome and was dealt a shitty deal with this interpretation of Batman) I mean look at practically every other version has done to villains which is not kill them, Ra’s al Ghul died of his own hands because of the train and Two face died because he let go of Batman while Bruce saved Gordon’s son, the fact that people are fine with him killing people is so disappointing and shows that they don’t really care or know about the character

@@quietdemon8138 The character has been through many changes in the comics through his 70 years, and yes, he has killed in the comics. It all depends on what generation you're from. In some comic book versions he kills, in others he doesn't kill. That's what I meant when I said that no single movie can be truly faithful. Many people from a different generation will tell you that Batman definitely did kill, they read it in the comics growing up.

Tim Burton said The Killing Joke was the first comic he loved, that was published in 1988, and production of Batman 89 probably stated some time in 1988 or 1987. Jack Nicholson said of his role, "The thing I like about the Joker is that his sense of humor is completely tasteless." He later said The Joker was one of his favorite roles he played. Michael Keaton came up with the famous "I'm Batman" line. The line in the script was "I am the night". This movie was released the year of the character's 50th anniversary. Jack Nicholson admitted in an interview that he was an enormous comic book fan in the era where Batman first appeared, and that the Joker was his favorite character from the comics. Michelle Pfeiffer, who was dating Michael Keaton at that time, was asked to audition for Vicki Vale, but Keaton was against it, saying it would be awkward. Pfeiffer would later be cast as Selina Kyle/Catwoman in Batman Returns (1992) alongside with Keaton. First Batman adaptation to depict the Joker's origin story. It remained the only film to do this until Batman: The Killing Joke (2016), whose source material was a big inspiration in the making of this movie The first Batman movie to win an Academy Award (for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration). It was followed by The Dark Knight (2008) with two wins.

I only have one question. Does the Joker need an origin story? The answer is no. What does a backstory do? It makes the character more relatable, sympathetic or at least we understand where he comes from. The Joker is a character you shouldn’t get. He is pure evil and that’s the fun part about him. A backstory is unnecessary and takes away the mysterious part. The killing joke didn’t show a true backstory. The origin we see is just the Joker’s imagination. He wants to show Batman that the sanest man alive could become something like him. Batman proves Joker wrong at the end of the comic. So please, just don’t care about the Joker’s origin.

I get tired of no character development as a reason why a movie is bad, or a bad aspect of a movie. Sometimes, and Batman 89 is one of those times, we only need to see the story without the "we need to see the character development " angle.

The thing I like about Batman '89 is that we start off with no knowledge, all we know is the legend of the Bat. As the movie progresses, we learn more about our protagonist. It's good for people who've never heard of Batman before, and excellent for reintroducing Batman to the general public, redefining him, as we credit this movie for doing. I would've preferred if they had done that with the Joker as well, but you can't have your cake and eat it too I guess.

Personally for me, I like the quirks of Bruce's character in this movie. He is lonely and sad but he puts up a good show and acts sociable when it is needed but you can always tell that he is not fully there. He only opens up when he trusts people like how he trusted Vickie which led to him revealing how lonely his life is by admitting that he has never been in the dining room before. He is not perfect and he is deeply hurt which I feel is the underlying cause of becoming batman that not even he realizes.

This is what I like about Keaton's take on Bruce Wayne. Yeah, he puts up a show of being sociable, but he does it in a way that everyone does, not for the sake of hiding his secret identity. He's just like anyone who has secrets and wants to keep their personal life private. No one would remotely believe that Keaton's Bruce Wayne is a masked avenger. Tim Burton admitted that he was never a big comic book fan, and thats probably a big reason why the movie remains so memorable. The maker of this video says "there is absolutely nothing human about this Batman" but to me thats a big part of what makes Batman Batman. Bruce is so traumatized by the murder of his parents, he creates this powerful invulnerable character with this unshakeable concept of "justice" tonshield himself from reality. He's a grown man in tights(or body armour) living in a fantasy world. In Jungian terms Batman represents the shadow "archetype", and represents how Bruce's trauma prevents him from being whole as a person. Burton and Keaton absolutely nailed this aspect of the character.

Honestly, I still love Batman 1989 just as much after watching this video! Even though he kills a couple of bad guys in the movie including the Joker and breaks his one rule. You have to remember that Tim Burton made this movie and he did not read any of the Batman comics. Also this movie is still a great Batman movie in my opinion because Michael Keaton perfected the performance as Batman and Jack Nicholson perfected the performance as the joker. And this dark atmosphere in the movie truly sets the tone for Batman as well as Danny Elfman’s masterpiece of a Batman theme in this movie as well! Very enjoyable movie to watch and one of the best Batman movies I’ve ever seen!

With the Gotham PD and knowing Batman isn't going to kill him, they don't put on extra security, they don't kill him, they don't do anything to make sure he escapes, they act like everything is normal, then anyone who doesn't understand the moral conflict of Bruce not being able to kill decides to blame him even though almost everytime Joker breaks out and starts a mad rampage, only Batman can put a stop to it. It's very infuriating. Joker should really only appear at most 2 times, in every comic run, Joker appearing should be treated like a special event, only to be reused in the most dire of circumstances.

As a non-comic book reader, I never understood all these hysteria about Batman killing people. All superheroes kill bad guys, and henchmen usually don't tally on the body count. It's like in video games where my character doesn't want to kill the final boss, and my thought was *"I've probably killed 100,000 henchmen in 60 hours of play time".*

I'm a fan of Batman '89 (partly because it's the most ridiculously 1980's a Batman movie could ever be), but it's hard to disagree with any of your points here. While the film gets a lot of the core character traits wrong, it did get a foot in the door and prove that a serious take on Batman could work live-action. Great video, you really nailed it!

I think what he's missing though is it's point though. Batman is supposed to be this mystery and strike fear in the hearts of his villains. General street thugs fear him which is something I really love about that series. He was a joke in the later 90's movies and his villains didn't seem to fear him at all in the Nolan films
@wawuglio

His points were actually silly. "Batman's origin comes in the third act." Who cares? This wasn't an origin story, it was a story about a "Giant Bat" terrorizing Gotham's underworld. "Batman says 'I'll kill you' to the Joker." Seriously, you're going to make an emotional outburst a negative to the movie? Did you miss the part where Batman actually tried to save the Joker from falling off the clocktower? "the Joker's motivation." You watched the movie 200 times and it never occurred to you that the Joker went insane after falling into the vat? He wasn't a narcissitic artist, he was an impulsive psychotic killer. "Marketing" Not even worth responding to.

0:47: Sorry, but I have to disagree with you there. It’s inaccurate to say that all of that Batman media wouldn’t exist without the 1989 film. The Batman comics had been getting darker and more mature since the 1970s and similarly, I think Batman films and TV shows would have naturally progressed to being darker and more mature as well. The 1989 film clearly takes inspiration from the original Batman comics from 1939 and the 1940s as well as the darker comics from the 1970s and 80s. By the time the movie came out, comics like The Dark Knight Returns, Year One, The Killing Joke and A Death in the Family had been released. Heck, when it was first announced that Michael Keaton was going to play Batman, fans were outraged because he was considered to be more of a comedic actor at the time due to his role in Beetlejuice, so Batman was clearly not still considered to be goofy at that time. Also, I don’t think Christopher Nolan’s films were at all inspired by the 1989 film. They’re heavily influenced by modern Batman comics like Year One and The Long Halloween. If you were to somehow erase the 1989 film from existence, all of the Batman media that followed it would still exist, it just may be slightly different. The notion that you would erase it in its entirety is incorrect.

The Nicholson Joker's idea of being a "homicidal artist" is not empty. He's not just a narcissist: he's a misanthrope. He hates society. He hates capitalism. He hates that there are happy people out there. Everything the Joker does (and this shows up both in the Hamill and the Ledger Jokers too) is intentionally designed as a satire on normal society. The "art" of the Joker is a polemic against reason itself. That line, "My face on the one dollar bill." means he's demanding something he knows is ridiculously impossible. It means he's indicating that absolutely nothing would make him happy. He's out to hurt people in order to hurt people for the sake of hurting people. It is very much saying the same thing as what Alfred says in The Dark Knight: "Some men aren't looking for anything logical, like money. They can't be bought, bullied or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."

I agree with most of what you said. But I don't think you need to imbue 89 with Dark Knight philosophy. I think the homicidal artist concept is more mature on its own than Nolan's characterisation. I'm not blaming Nolan for what anyone else does, but his portrayal of the nihilistic "agent of chaos" who spends the entire film delivering anarchist monologues is exactly the type of thing you would expect to appeal to immature theatre shooters. The 89 film has better character writing. Plain and simple.

Bruce internalizes his pain from his parents’ murders and creates the Batman persona not because “bats frighten me” or some other outward junk. Batman is an outlet for the emotional turmoil of watching his parents die, which he doesn’t allow himself to realize as Bruce Wayne. Half of the movie covers this. Sorry they used the visual language of film instead of explaining every emotional beat to you. Absolutely yes, and without spoon-feeding it to viewers with unnecessary dialogue. Explain how you don’t think that’s the visual language of film. And make sense next time.

That doesn't mean they are bad movies (read bad Batman movies), all movies will not be able to stand the test of time because movies are extremely affected by the datedness of the cinematography. This is just the opinion of the typical kid nowadays that has never experienced anything outside of the last 10 years...if you want to somewhat enjoy Batman 89 today, find a crt and a vhs. Bill Finger had no problem writing Batman as a Shadow knockoff who kills. I think it would've been interesting if we see why Batman is Batman in the early parts of the film, and see the no kill rule throughout the film. Then Bruce learns that Joker killed his parents and kills him. If done right we could see Bruce have to live with the fact that he killed the Joker tearing him apart and giving him moral conflict.

I tend to think in the circumstances of the DC Universe people like Red Hood are honestly better at cleaning up than Batman. There was even an animated film where Batman halfway kills Joker and says, “No more, the people I murdered by letting you live”. The villains just escape again and kill even more.

I was 16 when Batman came out. I had my first job: at a movie theater. The summer of Batman was my first summer there. At the time, when everything was on film, the projectionists would sometimes run the film to test it, so the manager invited everyone to come see it the day before it premiered. I can't convey how profound was this movie's impact on me. It caused the comic boom of the 90's--the creation of Deadpool, Spawn and stories that are now taken as canon. That said, I have always thought of the '89 movie as one of the most shallow interpretations of the character of Batman, and all of your points are fully correct. The strength of the movie has always been in its visuals and score--Burton's strengths even now.

Bill Finger: BATMAN DOES NOT KILL BATMAN 1989: Kills Joker, kills almost every goon in the movie But that doesn’t mean the movie is bad. Jerome (Gotham) > Joker (Batman 1989) BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN JOKER (BATMAN ‘89) IS BAD. HE’S ACTUALLY EXTREMELY GREAT.

Yes, you're right, one reason why this isn't Batman is because Batman doesn't kill, but you're missing another massive point. Bruce Wayne Most great Batman stories aren't really Batman stories, but Bruce Wayne stories. Bruce Wayne (truly) is the guy who's trying to be Batman and Bruce Wayne but still leans more towards Batman, Bruce Wayne is the man who's over the "I am vengeance" phase, and is now in the "I am the Knight" phase. Now, we do need the "I am vengeance" Batman. Some of the most iconic stories have come from the "I am vengeance" Batman, The Dark Knight Returns, The Long Halloween, etc. But we need the Bruce Wayne who wants to be Bruce Wayne, probably the prime example of this is Tom King's Batman #37, (from what I remember) this comic shows everything I mean

I think Burton's intent was to have Batman being mysterious and with an actor like Keaton it works. Not much of Bruce Wayne's background is explained in that movie but by Keaton's performance you can tell that his Batman is very intelligent, serious, calm introvert totally in control of his emotions. Keaton never looked believable as a top level martial artist so showing him doing ninja training would have been a bit goofy. His Batman totally rely on strength of mind alone and his performance sells it.

we didn't really need a 'training montage' while it might work with the bloated and inconsistent Nolan trilogy Burton may not show us but he kinda shows us visually. Bruce has all those strange exotic statues, weapons and armor so he certainly traveled and trained.

3:41 Making Joker the one who killed Thomas and Martha was stupid. It's better when it's either Joe Chill or when Bruce never finds out who the killer is. Then Batman's mission is a crusade against crime itself rather than a search for one criminal. The hero's arch enemy doesn't have to be the one responsible for their origin. The Green Goblin didn't kill Uncle Ben, Lex Luthor didn't destroy Krypton, the Kingpin didn't kill Daredevil's dad despite what the shit 2003 Daredevil film would have you believe, Jigsaw didn't kill The Punisher's family and so on.

I kinda liked the fact that we didn’t know too much about Batman in this movie. It kinda added to the mystery of the character as a whole. We leave WANTING to know more about him. What made him choose bats? Where did he learn to fight? How did he get all this gear? And we may have gotten an explanation in future films had the studio not fucked them over. About Jack, I feel the narcissism works here. It’s always been sort of a character trait for him. The Joker toxin/Smylex giving people his signature grin, even in the Laughing Fish comic book that came out over 20 years before the Animated Series emulated it, Joker showed his narcissism by trying to get a copyright claim over the fish he infected with Joker toxin. It even goes down to the way he presents himself in big bold colors and fancy unique outfits. Narcissism has always been a trait of the Joker, but Ledger’s Joker has distorted how everyone sees the Joker character. Jack Napier has always wanted to be top dog over Grissom, but as Eckhart said, “You got no future Jack!” Well, that is until the Axis Chemicals incident. Now Jack has a completely new identity, Joker. He can now get the power he dreamed of with this new identity. He’s no longer Jack Napier #2, he’s Joker #1. Yeah I know this sounds stupid but it shows in his story if you pay attention. He was tired of playing second fiddle but as Jack Napier he never got the chance to climb those last few rungs of the ladder. As Joker he can become unhinged and take what he believes is his. He’s now king of the Gotham underworld. Only, nobody’s talking about it. Anytime he tries to do something outrageous, the news turns to Batman instead. This leads to the Smylex toxin, and then his announcement of him throwing two million dollars into the street. He wants to be recognized, and that’s part of his narcissism. He wants to finally be seen and heard. Although Tim Burton never read a comic, I still feel he had somewhat of a good understanding of the characters and how he could portray them. He kept Batman’s gadgets, and Joker’s deadly gags, he portrayed Gotham as how it was meant to be, and he just gave Batman the overall tone we really associate with it now. I respect your opinion, but I feel there were some things that got overlooked in your points. If you actually read my full tangent, I thank you haha.

Keaton / Burton’s Batman is just a beautiful combination of lots of things. It’s esthetic…89’ and Returns (mostly 89) just have a “niche” yet classic bad-ass nostalgic feel for me. So it’s not following or canon much to any of the comics 🤷‍♂️ they were the first real big screen run at the Batman so it’s a “Classic” in its own right to the series of the films. That batmobile and batsuit managed to be so freakin’ unmistakable yet unique and just cool as fuck. With what some could argue as “rose tinted goggles”, I say it’s an amazing film ! Got me into Batman more as a child

I'm ok with Batman "breaking some eggs" in this movie. As far as we know, he is the world's only masked vigilante. He's not a superhero, and there is no Superman as a reference point to say "this is how heroes act." and referring to the original comics is totally valid. The only reason he doesn't kill any more is because of the Comics Code, which doesn't exist in movies.
