Shirley Walker deserves her flowers. Every character leitmotif is memorable. Batgirl's is a standout.

Shirley Walker is such a damn magician, even with the smallest of pieces of music. Her Green Lantern leitmotif is one of my favorites, and we never even got a full version of it! At most you get 4 or 5 seconds of it during Superman:TAS or during Justice League, but it instantly gets stuck in your head and captures GL perfectly.

Batman Beyond is a good watch. If you guys do decide to go through the DC Animated Universe after this series I hope you check out Superman as well. I think Superman is a good watch and for you guys it does a good job in introducing New Gods and Darkseid to wider audiences.

It would be a huge missed opportunity for them to not at least watch Justice League and JLU after this. I love Batman TAS, but that show is so much more modern and exciting to watch on a weekly basis, especially with how it deep dives into the DC universe.

The dc earth and it’s land masses are canonically largely than the IRL earth. This allows both fictional cities/ countries and real cities/ countries to co exist. Many dc heroes live in real cities. For example green arrow is shown to move from star city to Seattle in the Mike Grell run, the titans are often based in Manhattan, New York and Gordon is said to have moved to Gotham from Chicago.

Yea, while I don't think Batman Beyond is amazing it's definitely a solid watch. The best part of it to me is they try to keep Terry Batman different from Bruce Batman, both in terms of their style as well as personality. Even the villains, while echoing some of Batman's, still have their own differences to make them unique yet familiar.
@ObscureSwan10 ай бұрын
@@ArlanKels Also like how some of the villains in Beyond are from Batman's comic rouge gallery, like Spellbinder, are instead adapted to be futuristic versions which have become more iconic in the Beyond setting than the OG. IDK how the order would go after they would finish BTAS, if they would go onto Beyond or Superman TAS.

Aaron, the show Smallville fooled me for a long time too. I think that might be the only time Metropolis is in Kansas, it's typically in the northeast. Usually in the state of New York, but it's also been said to be in Delaware. When I thought about it after learning that, I realized it didn't really make sense for it to be in the landlocked Kansas when it's usually portrayed as having a massive harbor.

Oh please, please, please DO watch Batman Beyond. (And ideally Justice League and JLU before that lol). Not only is it a great standalone show but it's a pretty great capping off of the original BTAS as well. And yeah, Terry's great. One of Dan Riba's largest concerns with this episode was that Batgirl should be "cute" and "lively". With those aims in mind, he gave his board artists copies of Owen Fitzgerald's Liz for inspiration.

5:10 As someone mentioned, the difference in sizes of Earths was talked about in the 2003 miniseries JLA/Avengers where Superman quickly scanned the Marvel Earth and said it seemed slightly smaller with the East Coast not as urbanally developed. He also flew to where Metropolis was supposed to be, but all he found was a large field/forest. But from a writer's social commentary perspective, Metropolis is supposed to represent New York City during the day and Gotham City is supposed to represent New York City at night (which is why Batman and Superman have such a great dichotomy). But yes, Paris, New York and Chicago do exist in the DC Universe. In the Smallville TV series, Metropolis was set in Kansas because whenever Clark would have adventures in the city, it made sense how he, Lex, Chloe, Lana and others could travel to Smallville so fast. In the DCEU, it is said Metropolis and Gotham are supposed to reside in Delaware. In the Nolan-Verse, specifically after The Dark Knight, Gotham is said to be near Chicago but that is most likely because a majority of the big city scenes were filmed there which seems to be debunked after The Dark Knight Rises when Bruce flies the bomb out to sea. But for the most part, both are supposed to be set in New York State or at least on the East Coast.

Opening & reaction segments: - (Show intro) I'd appreciate if you guys watched Beyond. Production-wise it came out after New Batman Adventures, but I'd imagine you guys would want to watch the DCAU in production order, so that would mean the next show to replace this one on the schedule would be the Superman animated series first then doing its Season 2 and 3 along with TNBA since they were airing concurrently, then after THOSE it would be Batman Beyond. - (Episode title card) Yes, it's kind of infamous that the Bruce Timm style makes the females very attractive. XD - (Barb dream sequence) Personally, I also never cared for the Bruce and Barbara romance angle. This seems to be roughly the start of it for the show, but I never really cared for the idea. Bruce mentioned in an interview that in the Killing Joke, the scene everyone is put off by, he DOES confirm it's meant to be a scene as a mistake between two people making a bad call, with the "big tell" being the music where it's not romantic or inspiring, but I feel like it's a case of "everyone missed it because it's not fully addressed in universe for the audience to confirm their confusion of how they should feel about it so it leaves them in an awkward position." Discussion: - (The Chemist's teeth) Yeah, I DO think that's just sadly a holdover from early artist renditions where it very much was culturally insensitive because that's how Asians were depicted so it's sadly a relic of the time. Because that style sadly was just kind of more prevalent during that time. I personally don't know for SURE if it's the case he's meant to be Asian implied, but I have a SUSPICION that it's likely to be the "impulse recognition" to signify "this character is Asian" in terms of trying to have clarity without explicitly stating if he was Asian or not, basically visual shorthand.

Barbara having a cruch on batman is a Bruce Timm thing only, in the comics and any other media they only have a mentor (maybe also kind of parental) and sidekick relationship. but for some weird reason in any other story that Timm have work about batman he always ship them together, even if the rest of the fans hate the idea. case in point that terrible prelude about batgirl in the adaptation of the killing joke, specially that fan service sex scene that make a forgetable movie in to a terrible fan fiction

I don't dislike the Batman/Batgirl relationship; but I agree the take they gave to it in The Killing Joke wasn't asked for. And not for the sex (basically, that scene was virtually implied in this series universe). The reason why all the relationship and love triangle between Batgirl and Batman doesn't fit is because it wasn't needed in the original story in the first place: Joker is out to prove someone like Gordon can become like him and goes and shoots (and, if you choose to believe it, sexually assaults) Barbara, paralyzing her for good (at least at the time the story first was printed). What made this move very impactful wasn't the abuse, it was tha this costumed heroine, who had survived different perils and had become a valued companion of the Batfamily was seriously injured JUST BY CHANCE. True, The Joke does most things with her because she is Gordon's daughter, but if she hadn't been there, The Joker would have shot the person opening the door anyway; he wasn't aiming to especifically take her too, along with Gordon. And that's what makes her plot line more tragic and memorable. The animated film (as many films do) tried to add new material to keep audiences interested, but by creating this love triangle where Barbara debates between loving Batman, and being attracter to this bad guy, and then reaffirming his apparent feelings to Batman by fucking him unwillingly aim to one of the most questionable tropes in comics: the refrigerator girl. Because, after that roof scene, all that Batman does is to avenge the girl he just had sex with, not a colleague that just fell randomly by chance in The Joker's hands. In the comic Batman was already motivated to hunt the Joker down, and things just escalate because the Joker is playing his regular endgame (the "all it takes is one bad day" comes from this story, and he is giving a randomly very bad to everyone he is coming across). In the animated film, it's difficult not to taint all of Batman's actions with the "I'm gonna avenge you, my beloved" that, sadly, diminishes Batgirl. Even worse, the film ends partially showing all these events make Barbara grow from infatuated crime fighter to professional Oracle... and that's not even the case: Batgirl was already an accomplished professional crime fighter and worker (in her everyday life); what made the change in the character so interesting was that it was a girl, in regular circumstances facing this huge change and trauma in her life FROM THE APPARENT STRONGER VERSION than she was (she jumped between rootops, punched criminal, could go toe to toe with some of the most savage foes in Gotham... and now she is in a wheelchair; not that she is useless, but there is a significant change to fit in her life). In the comic she has to find the way to reinterpret herself after a life changing tragedy (a more universal theme) rather than just growing from "infatuated lady" to "grown woman". With all that mess of meanings and interpretations, add in the that many don't like Batman/Batgirl's relationship for different reasons (it's unethical due to the age difference, in spite they are both legal adults; it's unethical because she eventually dates Dick; it's unethical because Batman is friends with Gordon... and so on) and that was the perfect storm to make The Killing Joke unnecesarily controversial (remember, it already had a difficult sex element in it) and cringey for the average viewer (I mean, they named the third corner of the triangle "Paris France"; at least they should have made some effort in the "generic bad boy" to create the romantic turmoil in Babs' head XD).
