I always liked to believe that Killer Croc was just born that way, that thought always made the character more interesting to me. Also it would show how Batman just wants to help this man with a life that seems doomed to fail from the very start. WOW that got dark.
@justindevoe9556 Жыл бұрын
Idk if it is any more, but Killer Croc’s origin used to be that he was born with ichthyosis and that’s why his skin looks like that, and why he used the name “Killer Croc” as a wrestler. I personally love that origin and it’s why I’ve never been into the mutant lizard adaptations
@skin_lizard Жыл бұрын
@@justindevoe9556That's generally still the most popular idea, although backstories often go further into his childhood before he was a wrestler, which usually involves a lot of abuse and such due to his appearance. There's also a pretty frequent idea that the skin condition progressively gets worse over time, especially if he gets hurt, and sometimes that leads to mutations (usually to explain why he looks more or less like an actual crocodile over the character's evolution). Definitely a better origin and explanation than the bitten by an exotic reptile thing they had going on in the origin bible haha

I think Kevin Smith stole "The Gun" idea for his "Detective Comics 1000" story. Its not as deep. Its just Batman buying the gun and melting it to make a chest plate for the Bat suit. Though Alan Burnett's sounds ten times better

I think the ideal version of the story would see it belong the Joe Chill first and then come into the possession of the Joker in his mafia days. And if they want to make the story even more dramatic they could have the Joker kill Joe with the gun, and maybe even have him armed with it during his first encounter with Batman on that fateful night in Ace Chemicals (perhaps Joker shooting Chill could be why Batman pursued him into the plant?).

And you've pretty much gave a reason why HBO Max should bring Batman: The Animated Series to its outlet. There are stories that could only be told in animation, and there's lots of them, including from The Adventure Continues comics. The Gun would be perfect for HBO Max consumption. No BS&P. No limits.
@TJ523594 жыл бұрын
as much as we lose some potential Quality pieces like this, I prefer the artists being made to 'color inside the lines'... Turn them loose under an HBO brand and you risk some "Frank Miller-esque" adaptations... and i think these such tales would far outnumber the lost potential, ultimately doing more harm than good * There's a time and place for Millers work and adaptations of it, the DCAU ain't it. as to 'A Gun's Life" I think it'd be an amazing subject for one of the "Warner Premier" Direct to DVD movies (even if stuck at PG 13) ... They are set to relaunch the Continuity after Apokolips War... and something as 'different' as this would be a great way to sneak a LOT of world building/exposition in w/o affecting the pacing of a Hero-centric Tale

It's interesting to see how much darker things actually got in TNBA and especially Batman Beyond by the way. They dialled things back slightly when Justice League/JLU came out. Batman Beyond feels like the darkest part of the DCAU. BTAS looked dark but was dedinitely full of psychologically intriguing stories.

@@Apuleius_ Yeah, it should have been a TNBA episode at least. Nevermind. In BTAS there was an episode that delved mostly into the past, but that was to do with Jonah Hex and Ra's al Ghul. There was an element of karma involved, but it was just Ra's telling Batman and Robin an old tale about Jonah Hex and how he was involved in the Industrial Revolution. It was a part of the last batch of episodes (The Adventures of Batman & Robin). The animation had gotten to a point where it looked consistently slick, as far as the BTAS models were concerned. Detective Comics 1000 did a similar gun story. A man goes into a Gotham "True Crime Gift Shop". The man asks about guns and the store owner starts showing off various guns used in Gotham crimes. When the owner gets to the gun that killed the Waynes, the man stops him. The man then buys the gun, for way more than what the owner was asking. While this is going on, the story cuts to Batman fighting various foes, with each on damaging his suit in the same place. The yellow oval bat symbol, revealing the armor plate underneath. Bruce Wayne takes the gun to the Batcave. Alfred asks why he would want that. Bruce responds with (paraphrasing) "This gun didn't harm me, but it did scar me. It scarred me for my whole life. I'm going to make sure it will never do that to anyone else." He then melts down the gun, and forges it into the armor plate.

The series bible mentioned they had the idea to team up Mr. Freeze and the Penguin (I imagine Freeze would have taken refuge at some sort of arctic exhibit at the zoo that Penguin already claimed as a hideout) but it seems it was only ever *just* an idea, and never made even made it to an outline. I believe the creators have gone on record saying they realized Heart of Ice stood on it’s own and they resisted the temptation to bring Freeze back until the very end of the series with Deep Freeze. Honestly, that episode was probably produced with the intent to set up Subzero now that I think about it. Which was originally going to be a tie in to Batman & Robin, so I wonder if they even would have done that had the studio not ordered it. I know you guys know all this (what DON’T you know? lmao) I’m just thinking aloud/sharing anecdotes with fellow commenters.

There is a PDF of The One and Only Gun Story on dcanimated dot com, in the “backstage” page for BTAS. They were donated several scripts for unmade episodes by the late Martin Pasko, who wrote “Paging the Crime Doctor” and “Mask of the Phantasm” and was a story editor on BTAS. The script for the Gun Story is split into two PDFs, the first and second half, but it’s just one episode, not a two-parter. It’s credited to Tom Ruegger for story and script by Garin Wolf, with a revised date of “5/28/91”. It matches up to everything we’ve heard about the script, including the appearance of “Jack Napier,” who laughs a lot even before he was the Joker. The same page has scripts for the earlier unmade Creeper episode and some others.

Correct! We bring this up toward the end of the video, the new scripts posted over there. We also have a copy of the gun script straight from Randy Rogel, a newer version (1992), and the one on World’s Finest is incomplete. We’ll be doing a video all about it soon enough!

2:12: I prefer the guy being born that way, which led him to many hardships that, well, made him become the Killer Croc we know and fear. 3:53: As an origin tale, it's lackluster. As a follow-up tale, it would have been interesting. 4:23: Sure became the Mr. Freeze depiction on The Batman 2004 cartoon. Admittedly a good change of pace from the sympathetic Freeze iterations nowadays, but nothing much to hone about at some points. 4:49: Would have given Robin a nice spotlight but in my opinion, the Scarecrow would have done the poisoning instead. 5:49: TNBA would have benefitted heavily on this. 6:50: A follow-up to "Judgment Day", perhaps. 7:15: Would have preferred he never became the Batman even to the very end. The DCAU sorely needed more non-Batman Bruce Wayne action, in my opinion. Smart move putting Ace instead for Batman Beyond, since Bruce was really lonely at that point. Would have been a bit excessive, him being on the prime Bat years. A Scarface wrestling scene would have been nice, if the puppet's opponent is not Batman, but rather a villain who's losing their marbles one way or another, with the Ventriloquist watching in fearful awe. 14:11: Good thing Bat-Mite wasn't a thing in the DCAU. Beside, we already got Mr. Mxyzptlk later on, while The Brave and the Bold cartoon was a better place for him to work his madness. The Gun Story, if the magic ore stuff was kept, is better off as an Elseworlds tale, all while Joe Chill should almost always be the Waynes' murderer (although "Jack Napier" can still have a hand on it, with the possibility of him being the guy who hired Chill). Either way, would love to see this adapted even in a non-DCAU fashion.

19:17 So, I unexpectedly got some solid information on "The Count and the Countess" today... in the form of the writer summarizing the entire plot for me. I can confirm several things: 1) It wasn't written by Marty Pasko, AFAIK. Although he may have rewritten it in his capacity as Story Editor. 2) It has absolutely nothing to do with Nocturna or vampires. That's just fan speculation that has NO basis in fact. 3) "The Count and the Countess" is NOT the original title. More info to come, although probably not for a while. Stay tuned!

The very brief synopsis of "It's about a spoiled rich girl who's you know, whatever..." makes me wonder if it was maybe a concept that eventually turned into the Justice League episode "Maid of Honor" about a rich spoiled party girl who unwittingly marries Vandal Savage. Except maybe instead of Vandal Savage it was originally going to be Count Vertigo.

2:47 Sounds like it's also half of The Underdwellers imo! Specifically the whole "Batman sewer survival" aspect. Also, that's easily one of my favorite episodes. 4:45 I'd say this episode is basically intact. They just needed a "why". The "why" just happened to work really well, as did the direction, animation, and everything else. 5:20 That's because it's based on a classic _Joker_ plot with Joker Toxin, just with the added riot because of Batman not stopping it in time. Also, Rocksteady later dusted this concept off for Arkham Knight after losing Paul Dini. 6:25 I love this. No other comments, I just love "Batman and Riddler do Die Hard in a Prison". It's a glorious concept, and as soon as it's said out loud I instantly felt like this should already exist by now. The two have the perfect dynamic already, you just need to force them into a situation which breaks Bruce's stoicism. That's always been his main weapon against Eddie, refusing to really give him the time of day. So, if they're forced to work together, he's forced to rely on him and communicate with him. Inversely, Eddie's pride is such that he really wouldn't want to rely on Bruce but would obviously need to in the situation. Both of them would hate it so much. Idk if a "he knows his identity" would make it even more fun, but either option is good imo. 6:40 Batman vs Riddler Die Hard? Clearly someone felt Riddler + Die Hard worked. 8:00 That must have been the good kush. 14:26 There's... potential in the concept. There are theoretical situations where Batman has to protect a child or children for a long enough period of time to have to actually have some level of co-operation. I'm thinking some "Aliens" type stuff, but more realistic. If it wasn't BTAS since... Fox... I'd say this could be done in a serious way via it being a human trafficking story, not dissimilar to the one we actually got in BTAS actually. Just, rather than prisoners, kids. Rather than infiltrating via capture, using his Matches Malone persona. He gets all the way to their storage facility out of easy range of his gear somehow. Eventually it goes sideways because "Matches" is in a situation where his only way to maintain cover is to allow kids to be harmed right in front of him. So, he attacks the gang, but now he's in a Karl Urban Dredd situation with some kidnapped children to protect tagging along (the ones who were in the room), so we've got unarmored Batman vs an entire armed human trafficking gang in a situation where he's constantly having to put himself in harm's way for civilians. Crime-based survival horror starring Batman. 16:55 My feelings on this are complicated. I really don't like the idea in this execution, but when I actually analyze what I don't like about it, I feel like it's just too vast a retcon to the origins to do so quickly. Because the actual retcon was done. Batman being the result of Native American magic and cursed ore? That came back, and it wasn't bad imo. So like, I can't criticize the idea itself. But it feels so much more comical when executed like this. It makes it seem so random and ridiculous. Those retcons made them about him. This is just "some company was dicks and used cursed ore, now this magic gun is wandering Gotham and ruining lives, and once it killed the Waynes it got fixated on Batman and stalked him". It's a story about a magic gun purchased by the Joker to kill the Waynes because it was cursed by Native Americans. It just has all the elements and I bet the cinematography and art would have been fantastic and made it better in execution, but I like how these elements were done later. 20:40 Y'all. A "countess" that's bored? And it sounds like she might have a thing with Bruce Wayne? It's Silver St. Cloud.

I assume “‘ice’ called diamond” is a typo that was meant to say “diamond called ‘ice’.”

Nah. He’s ice-themed. He’s after a specific ice, the one that’s diamond.

The gun episode actually sounds really good, shame that it was too intense and mature for a Saturday Morning Cartoon.

- Killer Croc's origin story sounds really lame to me, with all the pathos of classic comic Croc removed to make him a generic brutish monster. - I would have loved to see that 60s Mad Hatter-inspired story (I have a soft-spot for the guy), but there's no chance in hell I'd trade in DCAU Mad Hatter (ie best Mad Hatter don't @ me) for him. - That Clayface infiltration story sounds like it would make for a really cool one-off story (hint-hint), but it's not the biggest loss in the world. - FUCK YEAH CAPTAIN PLANET! Captain Planet/Batman crossover/fusion/slash-fic when?! - Ah, classic corperatists. Fuck the wishes of the Native Americans; all that matters is profit, am I right lads? Anyway, I find the idea of The Gun Story absolutely fascinating, and I'd love to have seen it animated. - Painfully minor nitpick but the Mad Hatter that you guys zoomed in at around 18:14 is the Golden Age Mad Hatter, who disappeared for decades before being reintroduced and established as the main Mad Hatter in the mid-1970s. - I would've liked to have seen both the Gentleman Ghost and Calendar Man get an episode, both because I like the characters and because I find that their gimmicks have the potential to work better in animation than in the comic book format anyway. - Bloody TVTropes man. I love the site, but I really wish that they'd A) cite their goddamn sources more often, and B) actually update their links so that every other source that they actually use didn't send you to a dead website. Well, that was fun. See ya'll in Part 2!

All great feedback-re: Mad Hatter, didn’t have time to find a specific enough image so went the safe route and went for his first appearance because it would definitely still fit the status quo. 😜
@dannybuckle37634 жыл бұрын
@@dcauwatchtower Yeah, that's fair. Besides, very few people care enough about the weird and convoluted backstory of the two Hatters to even notice that anyway, so it's not that big a deal.
@TJ523594 жыл бұрын
IIRC almost all of TVTropes is user submitted... the Mods (such as they are) only police spam and 'personal problems' when it gets reported... with the scope of the site they'd go stir crazy chasing down citations and dead links and would need to start over at the beginning every time they finished...

The combined FMV cutscenes from the SEGA CD version of “The Adventures of Batman and Robin” voiced by the BTAS cast could count as a “lost episode”, right? Full FMV: watch?v=IQPdL1pt2n8

Watchtower Database Awesome. I actually owned both TAOBAR and Batman Returns for the SEGA CD; I think I still have the console and games still in my basement. Actually, I might fire up the old SEGA CD tonight for old time’s sake.
