So I watched this movie with two friends, one of which absolutely hated The Last Jedi and one who thought it was fine (I thought it was fine too). We left the theater and talked about what we thought and the one who said he hated the Last Jedi said he loved this one and both of us who said we were okay with the last movie thought it was good with some moments where the movie kinda jumped the shark and got confusing

I know I'm gonna catch hell for this, but I liked it. I know it was clunky at the start and fast paced, but I went in with super low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. I didnt think JJ Abrams could piece together the story so far and make anything worth seeing out of the two movies of setup we had before it. But I think he pulled it off. There are issues. You cant ask for Kylo to be the villain when his character has been set up differently from the start. So what do you do when the last filmmaker has killed your villain? What do you do when you need to finish a story arc for a character that is beloved and the actor has died? You do your best. It was not perfect, but it gave me a satisfying conclusion to the characters and, I feel, stayed true to the established characters. That's more than I was hoping for. (I also am an actor and place more weight in the characters' journeys sometimes than other people do. Just wanted to acknowledge my bias there)

I love how reviews for these last two movies (Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker) are all over the place on KZbin. Angry Joe hated both, Chris Stuckman likes 8 and dislikes 9, Star Wars Theory hated 8, but adored 9 and I don't remember what HelloGreedo said about 8, for him 9 was okay. For me, Last Jedi was just okay but I loved Rise of Skywalker.

Smokefan4000 You know, we could just never rewatch the sequel trilogy and assume that the series ends at Return of the Jedi. Heck, we could do the same with the Prequel Trilogy too. The Original Trilogy stands on its own and doesn’t need any of the other trilogies to make it enjoyable. Actually, all the movies in the Original Trilogy seem unfazed by any of the new movies in terms of quality. All the new movies do is add new lore that, well, we don’t need to follow ourselves. This is why things like the Expanded Universe and the Canon Universe exist. There were so many people who loved and chose the Expanded Universe, yet Disney wanted to implement their new movies into the canon which ended in them just making a completely new, separate canon. Yet there are still so many people who enjoy the Expanded Universe to where we still see new issues and books for it to this day. I don’t think movies can ruin any of their predecessors because they aren’t going back and editing their movies, they simply add more story to the original that we, as viewers, can choose to rewatch and implement to the Original Trilogy. Basically, these aren’t like the special editions where George Lucas literally went back and rewrote and edited the entire Trilogy to make the Prequels more canon. We still can look for the Original cut and enjoy the Original cut and accept the sequels and prequels as separate entities rather than additions to the Original. It isn’t like we have to watch the entire Home Alone series each year and see how the series slowly devolves. We can accept those as separate entities of the original, as well as the other iterations of Star Wars. It’s only a matter of personal preference.

The prequel trilogies suffered from corny dialogue, poor acting choices , and rough cgi, but it always knew where the story was going. The sequel trilogy didn't have that privilege and problematic decisions were made. Rise of Skywalker reads a lot better on paper but the execution was subpar to me. It felt as if they cut and pasted scenes from a five hour movie.

Finny thing is... They did halfhazarly cut together the movie at the last minute. They had a cut helped by George Lucus ready to go, but Kathleen Kenady refused to use it. Why? Agenda.

the prequels do not recycle from the Originals at nearly the same amount that the sequels do. TFA, TLJ and TRoS are all far more inclined to copy the OT. Biggest failure of the ST is they blatantly copy the OT and have no respect for the established lore. The story arcs are weaker in general. with the Prequels they were botched. The Phantom Menace should not have had a young Anikin it should have had him older and make a choice to join up with Obi and company. He should also had is friendship with Obi start out in Phantom Menace so that Attack of the Clones would not have to start from scratch. Making Ani a child put the Prequels on a course failure. The rest are cosmetic issues and poor dialogue. Plus a lack of motivation for Anikin to become Darth Vader- he should have had more than just wanting to save Pandme as a motive for joining up with Palpy. Sequels failure is set with TFA not creating an original story. It is literally just the OT with fancy window dressing and poor characters. The dialogue is slightly better with more fun and witty banter But by copying the original trilogy's plot (Rebels vs Empire again) and making the Old characters failures (at least Luke and Han) ruins the OT (or would if I did not simply ignore these movies and consider them non-canon.) Making the ST Empire vs Rebels again effectively makes everything in the OT pointless.

Even though he tries to conceal it as a Jedi, time and again we see him acting in non-Jedi ways to get his own way. Even marrying Padme (or whoever she is in this version) is done because he wants her, not necessarily because he loves her. And as the trilogy goes on we see him becoming more selfish, more self centered, so when he finally steps to the Dark Side it feels like a natural progression.

Sure it tries to retcon some of TLJ's problems, but it also simultaneously doubles down on the same kind of incompetence and lack of forethought which led to those problems in the first place.

The Protean Geek I think people who hated TLJ won’t like this film but will look at it and see it as an ok movie. I was ine of them who just hated the direction that TLJ took and when I saw this film, I almost felt a weird sense of sadness and redemption. With Disney having requirements and micro managing what can and cannot be in the mivie a long with the hate that TLJ rightfully deserves, JJ did his best. It’s almost to a point where I find it hard to criticize him for anything wrong in this movie. He took a bold move and basically made a star wars movie and I felt like it was only bad because of the glaring issues TLJ set up for it. Rey’s overpowered? How about EVERYONE is overpowered. No one likes Rose? Write her out of the movie. Luke was poorly executed despite having a good concept made for his character? Write him the way we remember him. Rey’s parents are nobodys and people don’t like that? You won’t believe who her grandfather is! Every decision in this movie you could tell was almost carefully formatted in order to fix the mistakes of the last movie. I’m just sad that this trilogy had so much promise only for it to be ruined through poor decisions on Disney’s/Lucasfilm’s part for not planning out an over arching story and JJ did the best he could to send the saga off on safe note

This whole sequel trilogy should never have been a thing. Disney should've just done something different and focused on world building from the beginning. Everyone was fine with the way the core movies ended in RotJ, adding on three more was like squeezing water out of a stone. If they just focus more on building the universe, and not getting cute with things that should be left alone, Disney will be fine with Star Wars.

The thing is, these movies made me appreciate the prequels. I know they are clumsy , but there still was this quality of telling an epic story behind them. The result was bad but at least there was an attempt. But these new sequels feel like they are only about making money from a famous franchise. Cohesion doesn't guarantee a good movie. The only good Prequel is Revenge of the Sith. The other two aren't good. At all. It's always gonna be a pick your poison situation with these two trilogies. If there was 1 definitive thing I'd hit out on with this new trilogy is that you can totally feel how rushed and jerked around everything is given how they pumped these movies out like mad when Lucas took years to do each installment with the original and prequel. While I'da rather 7-9 do what the expanded universe did with the books, Mara Jade etc, I think what we got would've sucked less if the Mouse wasn't so hungry for box office dollars and people actually took time with making a proper continuation of the story. Personally I do agree with some that Revenge Of The Sith is better than what's came out of of 7-9, but it is a little rough to completely ignore the glaring problems of the prequels especially when they really don't stick the landing and have a lot of filler garbage merely to exist for the sake of spectacle. I think that whole "look at Episode 1 as a contained film" narrative people tend to push as its defense still doesn't really help it that much given how there is still a lot of clunky pointless crap. Episode 2 is a mixed bag with some decent scenes but I try to be less hard on it because they essentially had to do what is basically a setup movie for plot conveniences to prime Episode 3.

I fall into that 'saw the Prequels as a kid' category. But while I can admit that the Sequel Trilogy are better as individual films, the Prequels enriched the OT for me while the ST undermines it for me. For instance, there's this theme of Anakin needing a family structure the Jedi Order can't provide and how this unmet emotional need contributes to his fall. Luke (and Leia) are raised in nuclear families, and is a more well-adjusted person who can resist the Dark Side. There's a great juxtaposition of Anakin delaying following his instinct to find his mother because Obi-Wan/the Jedi Order dismiss his visions, and Luke going to save his friends against Obi-Wan & Yoda's instructions. It's somewhat down to personal preference, but the themes of the Prequels work with the OT for me. While the ST ruins these themes. Ben has loving parents but still turns evil for 'reasons', Darth Vader died to save his son from Palpatine, but now that means nothing, Luke refused to kill his father who had done genuinely evil things but now he considered killing his own nephew because of a bad feeling. The Prequels worst crime against the OT was do tarnishing the mistique and gravitas of Darth Vader, the ST ruins every character arc, moral lesson and triumphant moment of the OT.

The prequels introduced an interesting setting that was fleshed out in other works. From Palpatine manufacturing wars to cripple the galaxy for an easy take over, to a light-side run galaxy where the Jedi have grown fat and lazy getting high off their own dogma. The new trilogy doesn't really have much that can be fleshed out because it's just the original trilogy again.

People hate on the Prequels because it was the cool thing to do at the time. No one wants to tell the truth that the prequels did have a cohesive story from start to finish, saw the development of almost all ( if not all) characters, and perfectly connected the dots to the original trilogy. I get sick and tired of people hating on the prequels because of Jar Jar or The taxation of trade routes or insert dumb minor thing that falls WAY short of what this trilogy has presented. To be honest, they have a huge amount of source material that they could of pulled from and instead of doing that they went and made some nonsensical mess and tried to bury Rian Johnson for it. I dont blame him for it... I dont even blame JJ Abrams, I blame Cathline Kennedy. This trilogy reminds me of a bunch of kids fighting over a toy and not really remembering what the whole point of the toy is.

It is the fashionable thing to do right now. One of the things that I hated the most about the Prequels was the introduction of midichlorians. The Force in the Original Trilogy was mostly mystical and I feel like the Sequels returned to that. I think the Sequel's biggest weakness was that they were rushed. Both the Prequels and the Sequels had the same issue. They both had to tell a grand epic story in a woefully short amount of time. And they took opposite paths to doing so. The Prequels took the boring route of talking about politics and long stretches of nothing happening. While the Sequels are like "Fuck the explanation! We need to get moving!" And I honestly think I prefer that over the Prequel's way of doing things. Sure the Prequels are more cohesive but I don't think that a movie being cohesive makes it good. I would much rather watch Rise of Skywalker over The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones any day of the week. Instead of doing another trilogy they probably should have done a TV series like they are doing with the Mandalorian. That would have given them more time to develop characters.

No one goes into this trying to crap all over something they are passionate about or what they care about. However the same arguments are made when it comes to the prequels, people dont like the talk of trade routes or politics, even though it has to do with the story as a whole. Instead we now have a story where nothing is expanded on or just flat out dropped for no reason other then multiple directors feeling that there vision of the story is better. The prequels did everything right and everything in it tied right back to the original trilogy. Sadly the new trilogy even started creating plot holes that contradicted the first 2 trilogies. Star wars will always sell, because the name and the property before Disney got ahold of it was already established as an epic tale. And it shows with this latest installment, seeing as mostly all the Disney star wars movies seem to make little to no sense. ( minus Rogue One) Leaving the prequels you received the full story of the Rise and Fall of Anakin Skywalker. Leaving the OG Trilogy you received the story of his legacy Luke and Leia. And in the third one we are still trying to make sense on the stormtroopers and how they can chose to leave apparently and Finn wasnt the only one, Rey's linage was setup in the force awakens then it wasnt important Last Jedi... now its the main focus in ROTS, the unnecessary cameos of the original cast members from the original trilogy, and bringing Palpatine back for the THIRD time? Its ok if you want to like it... but the first 2 trilogies are actually stories... this is just a mess.

The only reason people like the prequels now is because they have a new trilogy to hate. The prequels did a lot of things right, but back when they were released, the fans didn't give a shit. And TLJ, regardless if people found the movie enjoyable, was a franchise ender. Decanonnize the sequel trilogy or nothing, y'know... In a way, I think the RotS *should've* been made to appeal to those who liked TLJ. The people who seemed to enjoy the movie *because* it drove the old franchise into the ground. It's a smaller, niche, audience than what they had before all of this, but it is what happened. And trying to pave over the changes was only going to make the mess we have. As a person who liked force awakens and hated last jedi, i think Rise of skywalker was awful. Its a bit early to say that this is my least favorite star wars movie but i was just so bored and felt insulted thorugh allot of it. And i grew up with the prequals so i have a tiny soft spot for them and i feel like they have some highs unlike this movie who just never peaked for me.

Hey, I also liked The Force Awakens and hated The Last Jedi. Finally, someone who shares my opinions, and so allows me to judge whether or not I'll like this film... so I should probably avoid this film like I avoided Solo. Got ya. Thanks. While I will admit The Force Awakens was nothing but a terrible remake of A New Hope (a bit like Ghostbusters Answer the Call), it was at least a competent film.The Last Jedi may have had an original story, but it was a terribly written one. I don't claim to be an expert in storytelling, and I'm sure I couldn't make a film anywhere near to the quality of The Last Jedi, but I know for a fact that they screwed up some basic storytelling principles in that film. Chekhov's gun is just one basic example. Not only that, but I actually had to explain the plot of The Last Jedi to someone last week, and as I was telling it, I literally had to repeat to them that this was not a parody or some sort of Spaceballs II. From Leia going superman, Luke drinking blue milk almost directly from the alien titty, to the pink haired woman constantly saying she doesn't have a plan until Leia bursts in at the last minutes shouting "She does have a plan! She's going to go full kamikaze!" You can't explain the plot of The Last Jedi without it sounding like a parody of itself. And I usually love those terrible parodies! So maybe the problem with The Last Jedi, is that it takes itself too seriously.

You know for as bad the Prequels were, they at least some plan in place. Their execution aside you could at least see what George was trying to accomplish. I'm not saying that gives them a pass on their problems but they were at least building to something. Three movies in and I have no idea what the overaching arc for this trilogy. It's just a complete and total cluster fuck of poor planning, mismanaged direction and recycled ideas. TFA was pretty much a carbon copy of the first Star Wars and was all a bunch of set ups and questions for a movie that delivered and answered nothing in any meaningful or satisfying way. Rian was so obsessed with making something so incredibly lackluster and uneventful that didn't progress story or characters in any meaningful way that we've now reached the end of something that feels like it should have been two movies. The Original Trilogy and yes even the god-damn Prequels had this semblance of passage of time. I don't get that sense whatsoever from these films. Rey, Finn, Kylo and Poe all feel the exact same to how they started in TFA. Rey has breezed through this entire trilogy with barley a strach and with all the personality of sliced cheese. Finn, was the one that had the most potential but he was reduced to a bumbling comic relief side-kick that screams "REY" every 5 minutes. You guys can claim all you want on how the Prequels are still worse then these films but even in the time of those movies they could still move toys and shit and didn't turn off an entire generation of children off the franchise as statists have shown under the Disney era.

Your right it didn't have a plan. In fact the idea of Star Wars always being conceived as an epic nine part Saga has always been a cleavely fabricated lie. But it had a lot of smart and creative people to weave it into an otherwise solid trilogy that were reasonable coherent with each other. This is a trilogy however that has activity ignored everything that was established or set up in each movie. TFA was all set up for a movie that never happened cause Rian wanted to do his own thing without delivering on anything in any meaning or satisfying way (as Rich Evans put it: "there's nowhere to grow"), and the proceeding film ignoring and outright trying to retcon the previous film. Nothing about these films feel coherent in the slightest, probably cause there was no one to oversee the story development for all three movies. And from what I've seen this movie hasn't satisfied anyone, especially not fans.

So in the discussion of how much any particular trilogy was planned out here’s the key difference. Regardless of any changes he made along the way with either Lucas knew what he was trying to say with both of his trilogies. And that moored the events into some kind of continuous build. The sequel trilogy really comes across to me as a competition between starkly contrasting visions, neither of which gets to really come to fruition. And at the end of the day, I just don’t know what I’m supposed to get out of this set of films. The original trilogy, and regardless of what you think about them the prequels, had something that spoke to the human condition. Timeless themes that rang true. Other than “Look more Star Wars!” and “Disney wants your money” I just don’t see it in these new ones.

It feels like the people who hate the prequels are so stuck up about it. Like you're a master critic if you feel that the prequels "offered nothing to the franchise" and anyone who doesn't %100 hate the prequels and think they're the worst thing since mustard gas was created has no idea what they're talking about they're just a little baby that has no basis of an argument just because they may have been a kid at the time they first saw the film. I mean how many people were kids when they first saw the original movies? Take the sequels out of the franchise and it ends with the Empire defeated, the galaxy at peace and our group of characters ready to face the unknown after all of them have gone through life changing character development for the better. Put the sequel trilogy in and it turns out what do you get? Han is a deadbeat who regressed into what he was- probably even worse than what he was- in A New Hope, Vader's sacrifice was pointless because he didn't even kill Palpatine- Vader didn't even have to die because Luke should have just forced healed him, the empire comes back and takes over the galaxy faster than how they did in the prequels, both the death star runs were incredibly stupid because all they had to do was have a droid hyper-drive ram into each of the death stars and that would have ended that conflict- hell why didn't one of the ships just hyper-drive ram that shield generator on Scarif in Rouge One? and the character growth of every OT character is shoved in the trash can making their journeys insignificant because in the end they don't accomplish anything. if you can honestly say that having a character (luke) who spent an entire movie- Literally- saying "I won't kill my father, because there's still good in him." evolve into a character that would- for even a split second- consider killing his own nephew named after his friend and master is a good idea, I just- I don't know what to say to you because what it comes down is it makes Luke look like an idiot: *I can't kill one of the most evil men in the galaxy, a person who butchered children, enslaved worlds, killed a plethora of people because there's a small sliver of good in him.* *I'm gonna kill my nephew because I sense a small amount of darkness in him- oops my bad maybe I overreacted a little, oh well I'm gonna go run away to a distant planet now- oh wait let me leave a map just in case someone wants to find me.* This is what you're praising when you say that the sequel trilogy is "at least better than the prequels" you're saying that you prefer a trilogy where everyone's choices and struggles in the original trilogy are pointless and none of it matters because nothing was changed. the emperor is still alive, the empire is still kicking- in fact it's better because even though the entire Galactic Empire's economy struggled to create 2 death stars (stations the size of a moon) the small remnants of the empire can not only create a planet sized death star but equip their ships with death star capabilities as well as mobile land vehicles. Story telling has never been Star Wars FILM's strong suit, good character and Lore has always been what was excelled at along with outstanding visual and auditory effects. Which is why Rey busted a lot of balls, she had 0 reason to be so overwhelmingly powerful from the get go that any character development (in regards to her force power) essentially means nothing and with how little attention was made at actually fleshing out her character other then "I'm uber powerful" that it becomes negligible, the in your face aspect of her ability is too all encompassing. That isn't character. Thats lazy writing and a crutch to prop up her legitimacy as the lead. I don't blame Daisy Ridley either, that's 100% on the writers. This is only my opinion, but I think Star Wars was a lucky accident. If it weren't for some of the most groundbreaking visual effects to be done in film (at that time) and the ingenuity with how sound was presented the films would have never seen the praise they do today, The story is basic and told well enough to be a passable film, but no where near what I would call expanding on "The Heroes Journey" type story. The idea's and setting allow a lot of imagination to fill in a lot of gaps, when things start to be overexplained (MIDICHLORIANS!) you disengage your audience. I'd rather read up good old Star Wars Extended Universe books that are set in that timeframe; I think it would be the Yuuzhan Vong wars? Never really got that far, the furthers book in the timeline I got to was just as Luke opened up his Jedi Academy on Yavin 4 (set shortly before the events of the game "Star Wars Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy"). Because seriously, at extended universe that Disney made non-canon is million times better, and they KNOW it, that's why they took a lot of their ideas from it. Like weapon more powerful than Death Star, Han and Leia' son falling to the dark side, Ben (although in books it was Luke's son; why the hell would Han and Leia call their son Ben?! The prequels are BAD movies, but they are bad because they add too much and explain things that didn't need explanation, while the new trilogy is the exact opposite - it answers nothing and the questions it tries to answer lead in to plotholes and even more questions. The prequels expanded the universe, for better or worse, but the new films dissolve everything the previous movies have led to and make them pointless in the end.
