The captain soars into theaters, but can it soar into Rob and Doug's hearts? Let's see what they think of the latest MCU flick Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel is a 2019 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Carol Danvers. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the twenty-first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, with Geneva Robertson-Dworet also contributing to the screenplay. Brie Larson stars as Danvers, alongside Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Lee Pace, Lashana Lynch, Gemma Chan, Annette Bening (in a dual role), Clark Gregg, and Jude Law.

Carol Danvers is an older character and carried the title "Ms Marvel" long before Monica carried the title "Captain Marvel" for a brief period for the sole reason that Marvel needed a comic book with the title to keep the rights to the name. She has circled through multiple names while Carol ALWAYS belonged firmly into the captain Marvel mythos.

Some rumors actually came out about that. Keep in mind these are allegedly from undisclosed credible sources and they could either be true or completely false. The claim goes that there is a lot of pressure to fire Larson because the other Avengers actors are unhappy. The Black Widow movie has been delayed and Scarlet Witch will only get a 6 episode series on Disney Plus. She was suppose to be a big deal in End Game, but was pushed aside for Captain Marvel.

I miss the days when movies could be loved or hated based on the merit of the film, rather than its "societal impact" people ascribe to it (usually nothing to do with the film narrative itself)
@Kia044
@Kia044 5 жыл бұрын
It's the movie studios that are pushing this narrative. Most of the people opposing the movie specifically object to this and want the movie to fail to send the message that it's not cool to do so. If you hate this situation - support the people who are trying to stop this happening in the future.

Movies have always been "political" the difference is we know every detail of production and can have month-long debates/arguments about it BEFORE the film has a chance to win or lose on its own merits. This isn't a studio problem, it's a society problem. We try to make every movie fit the political polarization of our country and be pro- or anti- whatever it is we personally support or hate.

The Actor, The Media, The Social Groups, and even The Director came out saying "This is a Feminist Movie, and the best movie ever made. This is going to change the world. But more importantly, this is not for White Men." Using those exact same words. And the Trailers didn't go against those words by showing anything good or worth watching. So people went. "Yeah, ok sure. We won't go see your movie, and make sure to tell others what you said so they can make up their own mind.". And so everyone went to another movie, instead of this one. And this movie ended up very bland, stupid, and uninteresting. So they made a good choice, not giving this movie any more, and instead seeing a good movie with a better story, better acting, and better actions. That's all there is to it.

It just some troll who cause the controversy. The problem is the algorithm push these videos and article to the top because they will get clicks more often because ppl like to hate something more than like something. Also, the news organization pushes and expand the story by reporting on them. Making it sound like a bigger issue which it wasn't at the time. The problem is when it gets the push. it does expand and become big because ppl will think that the norm because ppl saying so many ppl are saying this. So tricking ppl in believing it is true.

The controversy was based on Brie Larson's comments on white male critics, her saying "I don't need to hear 40 year old white men's thoughts on A Wrinkle Of Time." As if to suggest the reviews for that film was unfair and because it had a black cast.
@misspriss2482
@misspriss2482 5 жыл бұрын
IKR? I'll say it again. That was a dumb movie for her to say that about. If a Wrinkle in Time had been a good film and it was obvious that it was being poorly reviewed because it had a black cast, I could have seen her point. However, I am a black woman and I hated a Wrinkle in Time. A Wrinkle in Time was a fantastic but weird book that was always going to be a hard sell. The movie alienated people like me who loved the book due to the pointless changes and made no sense to people who didn't know anything about the book. The movie bombed because it was not a good movie. The race and gender of the reviewer had nothing to do with the reception of the film.

The bride from KillBill Sarah Connor from Terminator Princess Leia from Star Wars Ellen Ripley from Alien Leeloo from Fifth Element Eowyn from Lord of the Rings Wonder Woman Furiosa from Mad Max Yeah females have been massively underrepresented In films and never get portrayed as badasses throughout the years and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the quality of film/character... anyone notice aswell how none of the above pulled the "it's different and better you know cos it's a woman" card? Why does it only seem to be the bad-average movies that pull that excuse? Serprizebuttsecks Also a lot of the women you just mention don’t even start in their own movies. And there are strong female led movies but they are the exception not the rule. I think a lot of people misunderstand the excitement some people have when such movies appear, are there people who take it to far? OF COURSE. But I feel like every time you demonstrate excitement for one of this movies someone is already ready to throw THIS exact argument at your face “ITS NOT THAT SPECIAL” And I just think that’s really unfair.

If Black Panther the movie was how we were introduced to Black Panther the character, it might not have sold me on Chadwick Boseman as him. Captain America Civil War, however completely sold me on him. I'm really happy that this was how we were introduced to Black Panther. ruda_chris I mean let’s remember that we can’t totally blame to actors for how they act or the screenplay they were giving. The director is the one who told them they way they acted was fine snd they have to hope for best they its gonna work out. Judging how the directors and one of writers haven’t wrote and made anything really worth knowing it was already kind of a gamble. Idk correct me if I’m wrong but I’m just trying to stay a bit positive. Like you said I hope her character has some more emotion Endgame. Different director, different writer.

Brie Larson had three expressions in this: smug smile, power-anger face, and blank. This movie lacked heart and was too focused on making her a feminist icon instead of making her human first. I don't wanna bring up the comparison but wonder woman did it better. You see her feel for the people's pain, her desperation at not being able to save everyone. This movie? Nothing. I could list a ton of other problems with this movie, but the biggest problem for me was it was all tell and no show. Carol's big hero moment before the super powers that should make us feel she deserves the powers? Narrated by the friend. Her seeing the suffering of people during the Kree-Skrull war? She says she saw it but we don't see her reaction to it. Her likes and dislikes? We only got micro seconds of it during the initial flashback sequences like the karaoke singing shot. Her desire to be a great pilot? She just says it: stuff like I like the view up there or the higher faster further thing. But you don't see her excitement of flying the plane or her pushing herself to be better and better. I know nothing about her motivations coming out of the movie, like what exactly is she fighting for besides feeling guilty about the Skrull genocide? She didn't feel connected to either of the races she's a part of: human or kree. Hell she didn't feel connected to the cat. Her confusion at not remembering her past? She looked like she was taking everything in stride. The emotional moment of the reunion between friends only mildly worked because of the other actress. She was allowed to talk about how difficult it is to lose her friend and gain her back in that way, but Carol doesn't get to how she feels about having a connection to a person but not remembering them while that person expects you to remember them. I think this movie would have been better if 1) it wasn't so focused the statement and focused on the character; 2) it wasn't placed between Infinity War and End Game so they weren't rushing to establish the needed powerful superhero and let her come into her powers 3) had more focus on her past on earth because that sounds more inspiring.

You know what the stakes are for them, you know how much they've lost. And then at the climax, the most pivotal part of the their journey, Captain Meh comes out of nowhere and saves the day. Why the hell did we build this massive universe only for some rando to come in and fix it all? If she is the one that defeats Thanos instead of Stark/Thor, I'm done.

Big time agree here. If it wasn't for the cat, I'd have written this film off. The first half of the film is rough to get through, and while the start of the second half piqued interest, the last of the movie dragged it out again. In terms of continuity, it explains why Fury wears an eyepatch, the idea of how the Avengers project was created and named, and how the Tesseract resided with SHIELD. 1 thing I noticed though: Fury calls the organization SHIELD from the beginning, but Coulson in Iron Man calls it by it's full name (the Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division) before shortening to SHIELD later.

I would have liked to know more about why the Kree want to conquer all or why the Skrull were destroyed.. Why is Fury going around showing and saying he is Shield like people should know what is that? I mean for a top secret spy agency screaming your initials and showing a badge everywhere should be a no no right? Also how did the Tesseract get into the hands of Dr. Mar'vel? did she stole it? And yeah the "Avengers" bit felt like pandering to me as well. I actually groaned out "oh come on" when I saw that. Fury getting the idea for the initiative from Carol makes sense and you could argue she deserves a similar status to Captain America as the "first Avenger". But having it named after her felt forced. Like have her say "I'm going to avenge the Skrulls/Mar'Vell" or something and have Fury get the idea from that but outright naming it after her? The "Emotions control the power" and how that's not utilized... I think that was the point? [Spoiler] Jude Law's character and the Kree in general are manipulating Carol Danvers to their own ends, the 'control your emotions' schtick isn't part of them trying to train her to properly control her powers it's part of their strategy for controlling Her.

I get that it was the point of it but it isn't shown well in the movie. This tactic clearly isn't working as she lets loose literal seconds after being told this; and this brain washing has apparently been going on for 6 years. She hasn't suppressed any emotion in the movie, she is still super jokey, snarky, and insubordinate when she goes to earth. If they wanted to show it as some control mechanism they need her to stress about following that rule and make an actual effort to suppress the emotion because she has been told it's the way to live in society with her power. She needs flaws and a reason to end up realizing that she is being controlled. Instead she just comes off as a combination of "holier then thou" and overly serious character, which is are traits generally given to villains (Ronan) and aren't good traits for a hero unless she has some sort of character development to add onto or change that.
@rishisekhar7054
@rishisekhar7054 5 жыл бұрын
but whenever she uses her powers it's not about her emotions, in fact she seems perfectly in control of her power levels. Even her big unlock only comes when she removes a physical inhibitor, not in any way because she accepts any emotions. If this movie had been about Carol initially being a stone-cold Kree bounty hunter and slowly finding her humanity, that would make this concept make a lot more sense, with her powers flourishing when she accepts her own humanity, and the whole Skrulls as victims twist would make for a much better moment for her than just a betrayal, she would have to make a conscious choice out of the empathy she's learnt to have through interacting with humans.

What I never liked about "Captain Marvel" is how they are trying to thrust Brie and Carol into center stage, the whole "New face of the MCU" at the expense of a lot of popular characters. Some people like to play this up as "Oh, you don't like a female led movie..." Which is untrue, the problem is it's not the female led movie I, nor many others, actually wanted. I want a Black Widow movie. I want to see more of Peggy Carter. Why does Brie Larson get a long movie contract and Elizabeth Olsen get shuffled off to Disney+? Tessa Thompson was a joy to watch in Thor 3 and, dear Lord, Letitia Wright's Shuri stole the show in Black Panther and I would be first in line to ask she get her own film one day (I really see her going places). And don't even get me started on the TV division. "Agents of SHIELD" is my current favorite show. That has a lot of strong, smart and most importantly to me, compelling, female characters... and they're so far in the backseat they might as well be riding in the trunk the way Marvel treats them. That's the thing. I want to like a character because the character has likeable, relatable traits and an interesting story that I want to see more of. I don't want to like a character because someone tells me I have to like them. And that's what I feel like Feige is doing. Telling me I HAVE to like Carol Danvers. I dare say the dude has a metaphorical (and possibly literal) hard-on for her. If she was joining as an equal, I wouldn't care. More characters, more movies, the better. But as she's been presented so far, she's the star of the entire franchise, the alpha and omega, everything starts and ends with her, everyone else be damned, and that's just not fair to a lot of hard working people. Scarlet Johannsson has been in six Marvel movies so far as a main character and yet only now we're actually getting serious work on a solo film for her? Why? We've only been asking for one since Iron Man 2... nine freaking years ago! I'm not asking for her to be fired or the character gotten rid of. Just turn it down a notch... or two... dozen, give other people the time to shine. That's what's so great about the franchise so far, it didn't have a single "face". It had many faces. Many interesting and likeable faces. As you yourself said, Doug, even some of the villains checked many of those boxes.

I agree with you 100% but I want to add something funny to... Even if she is the most OP char, and cant be beaten... Other movies have done the same thing better(this year) and whats even more ironic ALITA IS ALMOST THE SAME CHARACTER!!! a)She is the strongest warrior in the movie universe. b)She doesn't have any memories of her past life. c)She is a "fish out of water" dropped in to a familiar world that she cant grasp. Its all about story telling... while they sound similar on paper, Alitas writing is so much superior since all of her traits and talents are explained in a believable way with exposition or "Showing us". Thanks to that a Cyborg with 95% robotic part feels more human then a 100% human who feels like a robot.

The way Nick Fury got his eye slashed, and its place in the movie and its execution, practically ruined the movie for me retroactively. It was baffling. I gasped in the theatre. When he said in winter soldier that "the last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye", he was for sure referring to someone of great importance within his social circle having betrayed him. And how much that made him the distrustful superspy he is, hiding secrets all the time. He wasn't surely referring to a freakin cat randomly stratching his face out of nowhere as in a gag - to which he even made a comical "aaughh!!!" Even worse. It was played as an afterthough, and it happened completely outside the story. It had ZERO relevance. What a shame. What a disservice to such a baddass character.

I really was interested in this movie, the acting only made me more suspicious of who to actually trust, I’m scanning the screen for Easter eggs and references, and in the end: I liked it more than green lantern, most video games I’ve played with a few similarities and teen titans go to the movies (I don’t like it but have a small amount of respect for it’s over all message) (After the movie notes:) The skrull makeup reminds me of Star Trek or saints row 4 somehow. Can the flarken kill thanos by eating him? What’s with the purple haze on the screen? That’s what made me think of this was some kind of simulation for the skrull to probe carol’s mind for the information they are looking for. (What is the timeline of the tesseract?): because most people don’t pay attention to history class. Captain America is WW2, and he was frozen in a block of ice, recovered by shield and woke up in the 21st century. Captain marvel was in the 80s-90s and found the skrull refugees a new home. Steve is still the first avenger, the events after the tesseract was recovered still line up (it was just being borrowed to make light speed engines/ project Pegasus. (Fast forward a bit to the end credits) Then goose threw it up back on to fury’s desk, it was given to Erik selvig to research and make weapons for shield to defend from alien invaders, Loki stole it and rest is avengers 1

I'm going to say this. As a woman who has been told her whole life "You can't do it!" this was the movie I needed to see at exactly the moment I needed to see it, for one reason. The moment she says "I have nothing to prove" That moment has already changed so much for me. It has become my mantra when I am dealing with a bunch of these sexist jerks I have to work with (you know, the ones who don't hate women, but who think that they are the equivalent of children who need to be protected or just can't do something). That moment was honestly the most feminist thing I ever heard, because for so long I and a lot of women I know have had to "prove" themselves, and then find that even if we prove ourselves, it doesn't matter. Captain Marvel doesn't get upset when men make comments at her, she isn't moping over the fact that she has gotten her ass handed to her, and when she has fallen she has gotten back up. She's not a feminist because she wins all the time, but because she is trying on the same level as the boys and doesn't stop when she does get beat. Before I saw this movie, I was coming to the point where I was giving into the "you can't do it". But "I have nothing to prove" is saving my confidence. It makes it easier for me to let the men's comments brush off of me, it keeps me calm when I get angry, and it's making me better at my work. honestly, if we as a society got to a point where women said "I have nothing to prove" that would be complete equality with men. So, it's not my favorite MCU movie, but it is now my favorite marvel character.

Personally, as a black comic fan, It's hard to even find anything decent about her character at this point. Funny enough Every other avenger in there (ex: Scarlet Witch, Hulk, Thor, hell even Tony stark with prep time) were all vastly stronger than her in comics by leaps and bound, yet she's the only one who didn't receive a nerf for cinemas. For an unpopular character to now come in with all her power to now be crowned strongest, is a slap in the face. I'm sure the masses would have loved an unbound Scarlet witch movie where she gets full control of what she can do. Hell, that's why people are hype for dark Pheonix, they know how strong that character is and love to see it on the big screen. My view on this movie, it's not good, but it's not completely terrible. It's still bad but it does have a charm from the people who carried the film (the villain, the cat, and Sam Jackson)

People who are against critizism of movies based on their politics usually defend those political movies with screams of racism and sexism. Too bad nobody liked Black Panther as a movie, just the politics of it. Too bad nobody liked Captain Marvel, just the politics behind the actor.

The reason people are apprehensive when it comes to female main characters is because they used to be incredibly badly written (and often still are), very often by male writers who have no idea how to write a female character. For a very long time (1990 and outwards), strong independent woman = either a perfect, bland, boring character, or an outright bitch who literally attacked random men just to prove that they were strong. This led to people generally being less enthused about a female lead because frankly, female characters in general at the time were incredibly poorly written. Add to this the fact that for some weird reason, a lot of people always seem to think that while men can be varied individuals, all female characters have to represent all women all the time. "Is there a prominent woman in your movie? Well, she better be incredibly talented, skilled, smart, attractive and strong, or your movie is sexist against women." And when people point out that a character like that is an unlikeable, boring dud, they get called out as misogynistic. Male leads are generally a safer bet because of these reasons, among a myriad of others. Personally I think that's very sad, because while I think a person's gender doesn't really matter a whole lot, it'd still be nice to see less disparity between well written and acted male and female characters.

Exactly what I've been feeling from this movie, I really feel that captain marvel in the comics was never very interesting as characters compared to even other female characters. I hope the Black Widow movie and the Scarlet Witch and Vision series can put this character aside.

Batman lost his childhood, he lived through his whole life blaming himself for not doing anything, he neglects even his kid just to protect gotham for god's sake, he gets stabbed, shot at, broken like any other person Superman lives everyday knowing he will never be just like everybody else he has to cripple himself for the people the moment he and lois gave birth to John he became a father. he is a father and a super hero he has to juggle that for the rest of his life knowing that if he die one day he will never see his son grows up. Iron man is an alcoholic, weapons dealer, womanizer, he fucking approved the super human legislative act but in the end of the day they are easily hurt, scared, and has human traits people can relate to. Ms. Marvel keep getting back up is not original you know what makes Batman begins quote better than hers? I think the whole "control your emotions" ordeal wasn't about her powers going out of control by her emotions, but rather the Kree wanting to control her actions and opinions, fearing that if she goes too ahead of herself, she'll start believing that she's too powerful to be taking command of others or worse, her repressed memories are awakened by her letting loose. So the whole "control your emotions" was just gaslighting and the real culmination of the movie was about her regaining her identity and feeling free to emote and express.
