My fire alarm has no lid, and the battery is actually welded to. It started beeping super loudly, I think that was the end of life signal, I took it off the base and truied to deactivate it but it just wouldn't shut up. So after 10 minutes of constant beeping I just ripped the battery off. I just want to know, what was the right way to do it? There is no lid on it, and there is absolutely no way to open it up. What was I supposed to do?

Battery was supposed to last 10 years. This one lasted one year. Attempt to change battery involved carefully reading directions on back of alarm; and doing exactly as it directed. Then resorting to 2 youtube vids with no success. This puppy is going to the burn pile.
