IT WOULDN'T BE A BAD IDEA IF HONDA MIXED UP THE INTERIOR COLOR CHOICES FOR THE INTERIOR. The FAKE WOOD trim is JUST ABOUT.....WELL.. FAKE. HONDA DOES MAKE A GOOD CVT TRANSMISSION THOUGH AND, THE ENGINE DOES A GOOD JOB MOVING THE CAR. The EXTERIOR DESIGN could USE A BIT MORE EXCITEMENT and 2-tone paint would SPICE UP THE EXTERIOR. BUT IT IS SIMPLE and COMFORTABLE ( to me anyway, i have the 2020 ex). Currently own a 2017 CRV Touring, and it's a very competent vehicle. It does everything pretty well and works as a jack-of-all-trades type. The transmission is definitely the CRV's worst aspect, but I would also add that the lack of any substantial changes for almost 3 years now is also a major downfall for Honda. This is the best selling vehicle in their American lineup as of 2018, and it's disappointing to see Honda not pushing for more updates on what is arguably their most popular product.

I have both the hybrid and non-hybrid RAV4's. The non-hybrid has a coarse and loud engine, however, adding the factory under hood insulation helped a bit, esp on hard accelerations. It's still not as silent, smooth, and refined as the hybrid engine. The hybrid engine is comfortable even at high RPM, the non-hybrid is rough and loud above 2500 RPM. You will quickly notice the contrast at highway on ramps. The hybrid has a solid and quick throttle response at the highway, to get the same response in the non-hybrid, the transmission has to down shift with noticeable increase in engine noise. In spite of that, the non-hybrid still feels nimble and light to me. The hybrid feels more like an upscale drive train. However, the non hybrid is still a fun vehicle to drive. I equally enjoy driving both vehicles. The biggest difference is the fuel economy. My hybrid is getting 37 mpg per tank while the non-hybrid is only 24 mpg per tank.

15:31 I agree with your assessment Alex. My best friend currently has both the 2018 Toyota RAV4 and 2020 Honda CR-V in his garage currently. One of the big deciding factors of having both right now for him and his family was that the Toyota RAV4 just couldn’t hold cargo nor seat passengers as comfortably as the new Honda CR-V. Little things such as fitting in the stroller and car seats for the kid were just easier with the bigger cargo volume. One last big factor was engine noise and refinement, because the Toyota was just a rougher ride for the kids with much louder engine sounds on the highway. The Toyota is on a lease that he doesn’t plan on buying when it’s up because his family fell in love with the Honda CR-V and bought it straight from the dealership. Personally I can say that I actually prefer the rougher and much louder sound of the Toyota, but the smoother handling and everyday ride of the Honda cannot be denied.
@SilverScarletSpider4 жыл бұрын
If any of you are concerned about potential pitfalls of a CVT transmission, your apprehension is valid. However, the crucial detail to note is that Honda actually has by far the best CVT transmissions on the market right now. Especially when compared to Nissan, Subaru, Jeep, Toyota, and Volkswagon. carfromjapan.com/article/car-maintenance/how-long-do-cvt-transmissions-last/amp/ While Toyota has had huge recalls over their CVT failure and Nissan/Subaru CVT’s have been well documented to consistently fail within only 60,000 to 100,000 miles; reporting rates of catastrophic CVT failure are remarkably much lower in all Honda cars and SUVs. Concerning possible issues with the 1.5 Liter turbo engine and oil dilution: most documentation indicates that after dealerships offered free services to address all engine issues, and the customer is vigilant about letting the car engine warm up a bit before driving hard on short trips in below freezing weather: the issue is a non issue. No risk of engine fires, and no premature wear. www.consumerreports.org/car-recalls-defects/honda-extends-warranty-on-troubled-turbo-engines/ www.hondaproblems.com/oil-dilution/

Thank you for the video! A question regarding CR-V’s drivetrain: will the 1.5T+CVT potentially less reliable than Toyota’s 2.5NA + 8AT combination in terms of 10-year or even longer ownership? After all, this 1.5T once suffered from oil dilution issue while CVTs have been proven less reliable than traditional ATs in the past (see Nissan, Subaru’s cases). This concern did steer me towards RAV4 when I was cross shopping for an elder who wants to keep the vehicle for 10+ years. She was planning to buy a CR-V at first but I persuaded her to go for RAV4, though I never know if I could have been wrong. The two vehicles have very similar ACTUAL price tags for similar equipments (2019 models for example, RAV4 LE competes actually with CR-V EX since LX has no Safety nor CarPlay). I should also highlight the RAV4 hybrid which only added $800 onto the same gas trim and made itself our final choice.

I'm 5ft5, CR-V is one of the most comfortable SUV. RAV4 armrest is short and doesn't slide so it is sort of useless for me. I do not understand why manufacturers avoid sliding armrest or armrest on the seat. It looks less premium but actually works! At least in Japan, CR-V, or any other Honda, doesn't offer heated steering wheel. This is one of the major luxury features for me. I do not care about leather. So I'd have to go elsewhere. Toyota offers that even in small Siena minivan, which is my most likely purchase in the future. SUVs just do not match any minivans in terms of utility. Recent Honda decisions are surprising to me: ignoring the issues with 1.5T, no heated steering wheel, no AWD setting on their AWD models, no AWD trims for many of their models. Fewer features at a higher price. BTW: my little NA engine Honda smells gasoline as well. Often when starting the car first time in the day, there is a gasoline scent inside. It goes away if I keep the windows open for some time.

Not a totally fair match up of Touring vs XLE trims as they have different targets as Touring is the top end trim and the XLE is designed to be Toyota's volume grade. Now, personally I do drive a '19 XLE Premium which does add the Softex Seating surfaces with memory for the driver seat, 19" wheels, and an available 11 speaker JBL system which sounds great. I like the engine note as well, and find the cabin quite even with Snow Tires on right now. This grade is available only with the Gas engine, but with almost 10,000 miles in 10 months avg 29 mpg in mix driving. Overall I do find this vehicle a great value due to the number of premium features and feel the RAV4 has for the price.

Trim levels are like apple and oranges (Honda top end trim vs Toyota Hybrid - what a shock Hybrid has better mpg and quieter engine), and why highest trim level vs entry or mid-level trim? If I am going to spend $35k avg for an SUV upgrade to a Sorento, Pilot, Highlander, or CX9. All things being equal base model Rav4 LE and Honda LX, numbers (space and mpg) point to Honda, but CVT and problems with 1.5 engine (oil), both 4 cyls are chain driven, Toyota’s engine non-interfering. Why both companies, especially Honda, are not pouring money into best selling models to make greater profit margins?
@afcgeo8824 жыл бұрын
M. W. It’s because manufacturers like to only provide their best-equipped cars to the press and Alex owns the more regularly spec’d Rav4. Until reviewers out their foot down and demand mid-level trims, manufacturers will continue to do this. Also, the Toyota engine is a port/direct injection system, while Honda’s 1.5 is DI (with its issues) AND the Honda has a CVT, but Toyota has transmission issues.

I can only disagree in so many things. It seems that here in Europe we're having completely different models. Because: - interior space is very comparable. headroom is about 0.5" better in RAV4 in the front, 1" better in RAV4 in the back. legroom for the driver is about 1" better in RAV4 , CRV has about 1.5" more for rear passengers. driver's seat is better in RAV4 because of larger range of movement, especially vertically. seat's length is 440mm in both RAV4 and CRV. - cargo capacity is better in RAV4 (580 litres vs 561 in CRV, 497 litres in CRV hybrid). it is of much more better shape, wider, longer, and you can have a spare even in hybrid. forget the spare in CRV hybrid. - interior quality is considerably better in RAV4, CRV feels quite cheap even with that fake wood trim (comparing highest trims for both cars). - exterior/built quality is much more better in RAV4, it is more robust. CRV has many parts made of very thin plastic, wobbly almost everywhere. - fuel economy is pretty much the same for both RAV4 hybrid and CRV hybrid. CRV is slightly better in the city, but the more you drive above 45-50mph, the better is RAV4. - as for AWD, CRV performed better on rollers, but surprisingly RAV4 i-AWD was doing better in real-world off-road test. - not to mention the CVT vs e-CVT (power splitter/planetary gear). belt-driven CVTs (CRV) are not suitable for high-torque engines. so try to avoid CVTs when your driving requires lots of high-torque situations like heavy off-roading or towing a heavy trailer.

The thin Honda plastic is being sourced from China and will contribute over time to rattles, noises, and parts breaking. Honda's dealers mark up the parts three times from say 150 dollars to 550 dollars price. Robbery pricing on the flimsy China made parts.

Another well done review, Alex. However there was no mention of the oil dilution and parasitic battery drain issues the Honda has. These are well documented on other sites and owner blogs and would negatively impact the owner experience.

Do the CRV require the new oil? GF-6 is the newest ILSAC engine oil performance standard aimed at improving fuel economy and enhancing engine capabilities for passenger cars. This new standard, effective May 1, 2020, will replace the current ILSAC GF-5 standard. Every new level of standard is backward compatible with the previous generation.

Lease, I would most likely get the CRV for the reasons you mentioned (mostly practicality) without having to worry about potential long term issues of the CVT and Oil dilution, but would hold judgement till I dove the it as I don't like the way CVTs feel. I would go off the list here and choose the Mazda CX-5 however for the best styling, traditional automatic and beautiful interior.

I read somewhere stating that the oil dilution was fixed. I think those issues started around 2017 or 2018, so I’m very sure they’ve fixed it by now.

@@levimagnusson5880 carcomplaints site lists at least several listings for 2019 CRVs for oil dilution and I'm not aware of any specific fix so as I said I would lease only due to "potential" oil dilution issue. @guy proulx I actually drove the new Ford escape hybrid, even though I sorta hate Ford. It's much more car like, even more than the CRV, but wow. I was totally impressed with the hybrid system. I was actually pretty impressed with almost everything. Not in love with the look, but it's OK. Rav4 still looks the best, but the Rav4 has the worst looking wheels, and the escape has the best wheels. Best thing was that they throw $5000 off without any dealing. That'll make it hard to buy the Rav4 or CRV, because they aren't throwing off anything near that and are are higher to start with.
@alheiman95254 жыл бұрын
@guy proulx I didn't know that Ford payed Toyota royalties, but the Ford hybrid just seemed better. It didn't seem the same at all, plus when the engine kicked in, it was a lot quieter. My problem has been that the price is just getting out of range for the Toyota, and I'm not willing to give up features. I won't be buying for a couple of months at least. I'll have to see if they are willing to offer some better deals on the Rav4, or maybe since I'm trading a Rav4, Toyota will give me more for trade to make it worth it.
