Well, it's a Weapons squad, not a rifle squad. Better equipped but not more heavily armed than a regular infantry weapons squad.

It's a weapons squad. It is the support by fire squad for a platoon. In fire and maneuver doctrine your MGs provide support by fire, you have another squad that is your base of fire squad, usually theyre the ones that take contact first so it's usually your 1st squad, but any squad can fill that roll depending on the situation, then you have a maneuver squad who's job is to basically come across the flank of the enemy where they're more exposed. Sometimes you have 3rd squad play a more defensive role and cover your flank because your enemy is also trying fire and maneuver, and some times they assist your maneuver squad. The weapons squad is called weapons squad for a reason. They tend to be in the middle of the formation while moving so the platoon leader can deploy them where he wants quickly

As someone rhat was in a weapons squad in 25th ID, the mk48 is silly hard to control in comparison to the 240. Thats one of many reasons the 240 is still relevant.

Yeah for us it did not aim to replace a 240 and had no place on the support by fire. You just can’t beat the 240 ease of barrel changes and range when tripod mounted. I got to carry it for its intended purpose on a couple missions for my 2nd deployment as a gun team leader. We called it a “flex gun” because we could set up on a blocking position, but still “flex” to reinforce other positions the 240 would be difficult to manage, like on top of a ladder.

I think the issue there, is is that A. It can change a lot depending on mission, and B. Personal preference plays much more of a role than it does with more conventional units.

Pretty simple. An OD-A of 12 (but, usually 10 or 11, although there've been cases of it being as low as 8) led by a detachment CDR (18A), a CPT, an assistant detachment CDR (180A), a CW2, and a team sergeant (18Z), a MSG, known as a "team daddy". The rest are junior and senior 18B, 18C, 18D and 18E. There's also an 18F, the intel & assistant ops sergeant. The company's C2 (command & control) element is an OD-B and battalion's is an OD-C. Every active duty SFG has 4 line battalions (NG ones have 3) with each batt having 3 companies (A, B and C) and a BSC. Some companies (C-1-1, B-2-3, A-1-5, C-3-7, C-1-10 and C-2-10) have a special status of being a CIF, which was renamed CRF, then HTD and now it's CTAC.

Your first statement was true, the mission dictates the size of the force going on target, and how that force is going to be organized for an op depends on its structure, role, available assets, etc. Not every SOF has it the same.

No one is gonna randomly have something like an FAL or something like that, but there's gonna be more guys with pistols, running short barrelled carbines, stuff like that. In support of lighter Rifle Squads. It's slightly different from the regular US Army light infantry weapons squad, which has 2 machine gun teams and 2 anti-armor teams in theory (although they sometimes switch out an anti-armor team for a 3rd machine gun if that's what's needed at the time)

@beyond_thebest965 tactically on the ground, US forces were "winning" for the most part. Losses to the NVA & VC guerrilla fighters were massive. Strategically, though, unless conquest and occupation is the final goal, a war of counterinsurgency through attrition with a hostile populace without resulting to near genocide is all but impossible. No matter how many people you kill if you never kill enough to kill the ideal that motivates the resistance, all they have to do is wait you out until you leave, because unless conquest and occupation is the goal, at some point you're going to take your ball and go home. That being said, once Walter Cronkite did his little hit piece after the Tet Offensive, which was a bloodbath of a failure for NVA/VC forces, it was a final nail in the coffin for public support of the Vietnam War. The saddest thing to me is knowing that the hard lessons earned in blood and lost lives were ignored and those same mistakes repeated, from the jungles of Vietnam, to the hills and valleys of Afghanistan.

But having stepped in it, it might have helped both our countries if the politicians had any semblance of an idea how to win it. Tying the hands of the Air Force, with severe rules of what they could or couldn't bomb. But by the same measure, the Air Force Brass thought they'd be able to fight the Vietnamese like they did the Germans or Japanese. And that wasn't going to work.

@downunderrob not only that, but many of the FRAG orders pilots did get for hitting targets in air sorties were for hitting PREVIOUSLY DESTROYED TARGETS! So many of the missions were wasted hitting targets just for the sake of attacking them and filing the reports and generating statistics (and expending munitions).

When I was in 1st bat the Goose team was in the AT section in HHC and usually the corporals were the M60 gunners and had one AG and one AB. (Assistant Gunner, Ammo Bearer) I'm assuming that wpns squad was reorganized since early 90s.... RLTW

Yeah that's how the TO&Es used to be from the 1970s through to I'm guessing the 2000s. Machine Gun Squad with the WSL and 3x3-man gun teams, E-4 as gunner. And the AT section at company. In general the Army has moved to 2-man gun teams in weapons squads, and the Rangers nowadays prefer to have the Gun Team Leader be a corporal as one of the first leadership billets. The Goose Team was also relatively recently made organic I'm told, whereas before they were attached
