Rob as I read this, you can only put slain Wilderfiends in as replacement, which makes it a requirement to have a slain Wilderfiend of Board available. I read this more as, however many Wilderfiends you bring, they can be around quite a bit :) But if you start the game with 2 Wilderfiends, you can never have more then 2 on the table by replacing slain Heroes, since you would not haven an available slain Wilderfiend.

This was my reading as well. It's independently affected by rules, but is still limited by what you have in your death pile at any given time. Otherwise what are you replacing?

No he's right, a wilderfiend must be killed first, you bring a "replacement" (so not the same) with the ravager HA, since it's a darkoath. Then when you lose a Hero you still have a slain wilderfiend to bring back on a 2+. But it's stop there until you lose a wilderfiend again

The big problem with this combo is that aos is a 5 turn game lol. This requires you charge in your wilderfiends turn one do damage then die then charge in your dark oath heroes turn two die get a wilderfiend, then turn three rez the hero with ravagers then charge the hero have it die and get back your other wilderfiend. That's a lot of work and long bomb charges for to summon a few free monsters

@@21526 well, this is not a turn 2 or 3 play for sure, Rob is doing his best to show case a very theoretical setup. Im practice though, this can be huge since the wilderfiends can come in within 6 from board edges, meaning you can play them any 2 heroes very agressively and then use them to score a surround and destroy or similar in turn 4 or 5 without your opponent being able to do much about it or even sneak an Objective.

The Wilderfiends combo wouldn't create new Wilderfiends. As the Cursed Origin rule specifies that you can setup a slain Wilderfiend, so you can only recycle Wilderfiends from your army

So you play aggressive with the three fiends you start with, and then you can resurrect the fiends via their ability and via the Ravagers detachments rules, to potentially double up on them depending how well you roll 2+. That's 700+ extra points of just wilderfiends. Plus resurrected hero dying again could also bring another one back. If iam not misunderstanding the rules.

Wanted more Darkoath focus for 2 years. Love the theme, love the story, love the models, love the rules, they are perfect. Kicking myself for not grabbing the box, but honestly want to see how they are in 4th as well buuuuut I think I can see Darkoath models going on my xmas list after all of this.

so are the darkoaths supposed to be fielded with other slaves to darkness units? like a mixture of elite chaos warriors and cheaper darkoath units? Or is slaves of darkness basically just gonna be 2 different armies from now onwards? (Even till 4th ed?)

They can be fielded together, but for now there isn't a whole lot synergy going between them

Hmm the chieftain seems pretty good for the cost. The Guardian of Souls in nighthaunt is a wizard that also has a +1 to wound aura (albeit with no set up) for 150 pts. These would seem to be somewhat comparable units given the point inflation of nighthaunt. I'd personally consider a guardian of Souls at least a 1 of in night haunt armies.

As someone thinking of grabbing these guys, what do we think the edition proof of them is? I'm worried about a supplement group just getting the axe next edition. Or to be downgraded to a small support to regular Slaves to Darkness.

Darkoath are just reskinned BoC. Extra heroic actions, cheap units and the Wilderfiends are just Gavespawn Chaos Spawn.

love the video, thanks Ron. It's a shame these rules, which seem super good and fun, are coming so late into the edition they are pretty much redundant. Think this shows the rules must have been written a while ago as I don't know why GW would write what are quite nice rules with good synergy so late in the edition

28.5mm for the infantry, 60x35mm for the cavalry, 75x42mm for the chieftain, 60mm round for the wilderfiend.

These seem like a headache to keep track of. One of my big bummers about current AoS is cheap units, which are generally screening/chaff units, having either too many special rules or stuff you need to keep track of. Tracking the oaths will be rather annoying, and it seems like a lot of conditions have to be met to get them to function as intended. Say the strike first effect can't be triggered in time. Then your hero goes first, triggers its ability, and then the opponent slaughters most of the darkoath units around them because they fall over to a stiff breeze. Sure you can hold off the charge, but then you lost your initiative on a whole maneuver.

GW have pedigree on this. When the Lumineth twins first released they had an owl that got attacks. That owls attacks were the same as a Stormcast Liberator. So heroic reforged heroes of ages past infused with lightning god power? Equivalent to an owl.

The book is only included with the army box, and the only other method of getting the rules is from the next Dawnbringer book and the AoS app (which is free). This Darkoath book is essentially a fancier version of the warscrolls you get printed with the assembly instructions of individual kits. No one is going to pick it up off a store shelf and buy it separately.
