What is it with everyone crapping on the Witch’s design in the Disney version? I know Tilda Swinton’s version didn’t look anything like the book, but nobody complained about Frankenstein or Gene Wilder’s portrayal of Willy Wonka or Margaret Hamilton’s Wicked Witch of the West not looking anything like the book description. So why does the look of the White Witch matter more compared to the other appearances of the aforementioned characters on film?
@stinameaner Жыл бұрын
@@hunterolaughlin I don't think it's just the appearance. It might jusy be a point theu bring up veczuse theu don't loke thay version as much. This version of the witch is more like c.s lewis' interpretation in terms.of being a 'larger than life character' Tilda's portrayal was more mellow..it was good and I actually liked he way she looked but I understand why people prefer this witch better..I generally prefer this version altogether as well depsite thr lower budget and some hammy acting. @theproplady9 жыл бұрын
I always preferred this witch to the grotesquely costumed witch in the Disney version. She seemed to be a large ham in the books and they really captured it here. (There's a cartoon version of this story made in the 70's that also has a hammy witch in it. I'm sure it's got to be on KZbin somewhere...)
@hunterolaughlin3 жыл бұрын
Jadis was not a hammy villain in the books. Barbara Kellerman’s performance is an insult to the White Witch. I recently re-read the book in honor of its 70th anniversary, and Jadis was a lot more restrained and subtle. For example, this Witch freaks out over learning there are 4 kids in Narnia and her chief of Police being slain compared to her book counterpart who never freaked out and took the information in very calmly. This is proof that book Jadis is not as hammy or over-the-top as the portrayals before Swinton. The differences to how she reacted to 4 kids being in Narnia and Maugrim’s death in the book compared to the miniseries shows a stark contrast in behavior and personality. With how book Jadis takes in the information suggests she is a strategist who thinks and plans her next course of action instead of acting out on her emotions compared to Kellerman’s Witch who overreacts whenever she hears some news that could seem like a threat to her. So, go back re-read the book and compare the Witch’s personality to Kellerman’s.
