I remember the first time I went camping in the woods by myself, I had a very low budget and a strong will, so I shopped at garage sales and pawn shops for a few weeks and within a month, I had the main components I needed. Found a decent 20° sleeping bag for $5, 10x12 hd tarp for $15, AG russel bowie knife for $20, painters tarp for less than $10, memory foam mattress topper that I cut to use as a bed roll/ground pad for $15ish, a military surplus duffle bag with shoulder strap for $15. I had a blast and for the money I saved, I was impressed. Over the years I replaced all that with quality gear which has made camping more comfortable and enjoyable, but it sure can be done for cheap if you kniw how to shop.

That's amazing how you were able to start your camping journey with a low budget and resourcefulness! It's definitely possible to enjoy outdoor adventures without breaking the bank. Speaking of quality gear, have you heard about the Segway Portable PowerStation Cube Series? It's a versatile and durable power station with a massive capacity and fast recharging capabilities. It can be a reliable backup power source for your camping trips or even for home use. Check it out!

@@ARLGD I can't say I have, I have looked into the Jackyl and some others but I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet, I'm also looking into solar chargers and such too but that's another rabbit hole to dive into lol. Only thing I did do for power wise is get a power converter added to my truck, since it has a 90 amp generator on it, it can power some necessities as needed.

I have to laugh when I see these guys with those chairs and cots because the first thing I think is, yes, it's great for you smaller guys. But I am 6'2, 280 lbs. I'd break those things in a minute. Lol. I usually take me a good size air mattress to put in the back of my truck. I have two Gas One stoves and an old fashioned percolator for coffee. Got a good size lawn chair I take with me. And something for beneath the legs on the chair so it doesn't sink into the ground. And of course a bunch of tarps. I love truck camping, whether raining or not. Usually in the fall or spring. I don't go in the summer as I cannot take the heat. I do sometimes in the winter if it isn't too cold. I am 64 and my body just can't take a lot anymore...lol. Have a great day everyone. 18:15

You need to rainX all of your windows it will improve your vision on the road tenfold. And you will be able to see out of the camper/cap windows in the rain. And if you want to get into camping and not spend a ton of money, garage sales are a great place to start. I still buy some used items when the prices are good. Last white gas Colman gas stove I bought was only $10 and looked like it might have been used once. I picked up a tent and 2 cotts for less than $150 for my daughter, well I found them she paid for them. You just need to keep your eyes open for deals.

I do something like your tarp setup but with an actual tarp, wood poles of various lengths, baling twine and gutter spikes with washers to keep the rope tied on. I use pool noodles cutdown with my jig saw and a single splice down the middle. It allows me to put them on the tarp string so you don’t accidentally trip over it. The poles have a screw on one end that you can hook the tarp grommets over. I’ve used 20’ x 16’ tarps and once at the beach, my ex helped me set up the tarp down the side of the converted horse trailer and an additional tarp at the back of the trailer. I then used carabiners to connect the two tarps. It was a stormy weekend and I had a lot of company under those two tarps. We had moved the fire ring to the edge of the tarp so it was cozy. It was the first weekend out with my new solar panel on top and with the rain I had to use my generator a lot. I put tarps over the stalls for the horses utilizing shorter tarp poles, duct tape and baling twine. Lol. I have camped in the back of my truck using a double mattress from home and later a taller cot then you have here. I have a smallish porta poti that came with a nice cover. I used it as a night stand and a place for Mr Heater to warm it up quickly in the morning. I put a rug on the floor of the truck bed and taped “curtains “ to the windows. It made getting dressed difficult with limited headroom so now the cot is in the front bedroom in my horse trailer. The cot is tall enough to store bins underneath and I have a dresser in the nose of my bumper pull bedroom.

I like camping in really bad weather. Tornadoes always fascinates me. Growed up in Kansas, alot of Tornadoes. Now in Tennessee, we see a few, but not as much. It's very dangerous camping in tornado weather, but I love it. I push things to far sometimes by camping under trees. Wouldn't suggest that to anyone. Way to dangerous. Myself, it's always enjoyable for me personally. I've studied Tornadoes all my life and know what to do if one decides to show up in the area I'm camping. Again, I don't advise anyone to do it unless you really know what your doing. I have fun around Tornadoes, heavy rain, hail, flooding, high winds, etc.... I'm 60. Learned alot about weather over the years. Bad weather makes me feel alive and full of energy. I don't drive, so things can really get interesting in a hurry when a strong storm shows up. I ride my mountain bike with everything I need to survive and have fun. Use to be homeless for about 5yrs. Learned alot about survival during that time, living in the woods. Since that time, I've studied and practiced camping and survival skills each time I go out into a location. Anyway, I say go for it! Go camping, but be prepared and smart about it. Most of all, be safe!!!

In the UK 🇬🇧 you’re not allowed too sleep in lay-bys or side roads. You have too go to a proper site or you find a caravan and camping club rally in a Feild or a Caravan and Motorhome rally. The rally’s are the cheapest way to camp in the UK 🇬🇧. But Scotland is different some islands you can canoe 🛶 or kayak to and camp for free. Other than that. In the Uk it’s too be a proper site. ❤❤❤❤

I wouldn't go camping in the rain without gum boots (wellies, rain boots, rubber boots). If you keep your feet dry, it improves your mood, and makes any other inconveniences easier to deal with. It also helps immensely with keeping the floor of the tent dry and clean. Keep some crocs inside the door of the tent and leave the gum boots outside, covered up, or inside on a mat. Your kids will get used to gum boot rules pretty quickly. Because a dry feet camper is a happy camper.

I have gotten to where I love van/truck camping as it is so much less work to set up and taking down not to mention more secure/safer when you are sleeping. A person that uses minimum gear most things can be stored/kept in a tote or tote or two and ready to go in a couple of minutes. My van being originally a conversion van has the switchable lights down thee center of the roofline along with the led mood lights along the outer edges of the interior roof line. I also have a fishing rod holder that will hold 4 rods mounted to the ceiling as well. A cot sleeping bag and folding camp chair and folding camp table along with a small cook burner and cooler and /or 12 volt fridge completes the majority of gear. For additional light I have a flashlight with adjustable head that works off of my power tool batteries which I have numerous batteries for and these days solar outdoor lights like for along a sidewalk work well and can be found on sale for really reasonable prices just about anywhere these days. These days there is absolutely no reason camping needs to be expensive even small backpacking burners that screw onto a fuel canister can be bought for under $15 for the cheapest models and take up almost no room. A 12 volt refrigerator is nice but again for the occasional weekend camper not a requirement and a normal cooler from somewhere like Walmart with a couple of bags of ice and a few frozen water bottles will last fine in most cases for a weekend camping trip and that cooler can work just fine for years for not a lot of initial investment. One of my favorite past times when resting or bad weather is reading a good book, kills off that feeling bored just sitting there feeling.

Here is a suggestion for those who are vehicle camping and want to have a fire, you can bring just enough to get the fire started real good. It doesn’t have to be a lot, a couple handfuls of kindling and a few split logs to add once the kindling does its job. Once the fire is going good, then you can take the time to search for more dryish wood in the forest or brush around you. The amount of dry firewood you bring depends on how much room you can spare in the trunk of your vehicle, there is always enough nooks and crannies to tuck a few armloads of split firewood.
