This was great to see. I just got my new garage built and put up OSB walls. I was wondering what the paint would look like over the OSB. Thanks for the video.
@inawrocki2074 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I hope this episode reaches more people because the end result made a believer out of me. Unlike taped drywall, you WILL see seams with OSB, but nothing some battens can't clean up. The texture itself turned out really cool; not as perfect as spackled drywall, but I've seen people stamp walls with straw and that's what this looks like! Good luck on your build!

@@inawrocki207 I see this is a year ago but I hope you're still checking replies. I am finishing my garage and researching the type of pain to use on the OSB. Some forums are saying to use acrylic, others say you have to use oil-based because OSB has a wax coating. Can you advise me on this? OH>>>> and your garage is fantabulous!!!

Did your Costco have that toolbox in stock? Or was it a special order? Can't find anything about it on their website. 😥 Edit - found it on Costco Canada website. $1,199.99, now. Yikes!

That seems to be full price. I nabbed this for $699.99, I believe. It was in store, but Costco is always changing things up. That said, this chest is still perfect as the day I got it, even after moving with it. It is superbly built and fully matte black is beautiful.

Looks great, when u say u put rough side inward are u talking about the dull side with the concrete like texture?
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
There's one side that is coated for exterior protection. It still has all the "pieces," but is pretty smooth. There is an interior side that has an even, rough texture where it was pressed. It's pretty easy to tell if you touch both sides of a board. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Can you comment on the advantages of OSB vs. hardwood plywood for interior garage walls for a smaller garage than yours? Hardwood plywood is more expensive but I do wonder if it's worth paying a bit more and not having to deal with OSB's strandy-ness and difficulty of painting.
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
The only difference is aesthetic (which I described in the video). The OSB is just as structural as plywood. It's also easier to paint. OSB is coated with the glue substance used to make it, which paints over nicely. The plywood ceiling sucked up so many coats of paint compared to the OSB. Plywood is bare wood, which is actually more spongy than OSB. The texture of OSB looks really cool when all painted over nicely. Remember, the whole thing will have the same "strandy-ness," which means it's uniform, which makes it look like intentional texture like spackle.
@philhario36403 жыл бұрын
@@inawrocki207 Interestingly, my question was motivated by a video by @Figure it Audi here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3e0ZGSMq76ioNk where the author (Steve) complains at length about the difficulty of painting OSB. I sort of assumed that hardwood plywood would be easier to paint than OSB but to be honest I have no experience.
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
That is definitely not my experience. We painted all the OSB walls (texture-pressed side facing in, smooth side facing out), and simultaneously painted 3/16 plywood for the ceiling. It was the same excellent brand of Behr paint on both. The plywood was not covered until 3 coats. OSB was almost covered in the first coat, second was more than sufficient. I'm sure there are different brands of paint, different OSB, different plywood, and lots of other factors that can affect this, but this was our experience. Thanks for commenting and watching!

Serious question as I'm thinking of doing a wood ceiling in my car garage. What happens if/when the roof leaks and it spoils the wood? Would you have to cut it out?
@inawrocki2072 жыл бұрын
Worst case scenario, you just gently pry a panel off. They're just staples and some adhesive. If any breaks off (construction adhesive is a beast sometimes), just clean it up before replacing panel. That said, metal roof over the water barrier? Leaks are never gonna happen, not here in the desert. We literally get less than an inch of rain, some seasons. It's not something we worry about. Thanks for checking it out! Be sure to look at the rest of the build.

@@inawrocki207 I'm in England, chucks down for half the year. 25 year old, pitched and tiled roof. I suspect it leaks a little already tbh. Might have to invest in preventative maintenance first. 👍

Im thinking about doing OSB in my shop and was worried about the gaps or seams between the wood. You didnt have to fill any of that in to hide it? Also 3 coats covered the OSB wood look?
@inawrocki2074 жыл бұрын
I explain everything you're asking in the video; you have to see the results for yourself at the end! Painted and trimmed OSB just looks like a straw-brushed texture. It's beautiful. I have zero regrets going the OSB route. This stuff finished up beautifully, I have a gorgeous end result to enjoy, and it is TOUGH. I have since hung a bike, tools, pegboard, and many other things wherever I want because OSB is structural, unlike Drywall. Drywall is seamless and prettier; but it's annoying to hang, everything needs to be hung from studs, and it will turn to swiss-cheese in a garage environment. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Looks very nice. Just curious why you used plywood on the ceiling and not OSB?
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
Plywood weighs a fraction of what OSB does. There’s no need to put that much weight overhead. It was just more practical. Thanks for watching and commenting!

What thickness of plywood did you use?
@denjhill3 жыл бұрын
Super duper paint, but you needed three coats? Are you a salesman for Behr?
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
I think I did two coats on the walls. OSB is heavily treated and processed, so paint will cover and dry nicely by two coats. The ceiling is raw pine plywood; that stuff sucks paint up like a sponge. It absolutely will not have clean, full coverage with fewer than 3 coats. That's the nature of porous, untreated wood. Stain would have been a good option, too, but I just wanted a clean white ceiling. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You need more light, more electric, more HVAC, wall-mounted vacuum, and more compressed air & built-in storage.
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting! It's certainly not outfitted yet, but there's a lot more going on now than just this video now. I have 6x 12,000 Lumen bulbs in the ceiling. Trust me, it's like turning on the sun. Not sure what you could possibly do with 16x 110 plugs and 2x 220 plugs; it's more electric than I'd ever need to work on both cars at once. There's now a beautiful Potbelly for heat in the winter. There will be a video coming soon building custom cabinets and storage! Once I'm at a point where it feels "complete," I'll be doing a walk around of the outfitted garage. Subscribe and the video will pop up when it's live. Thanks!

Why OSB instead of drywall? OSB is $5 more per sheet at my local HD. Perhaps the price delta was reversed when you did this.
@inawrocki2073 жыл бұрын
Prices are obscene after last year. I spent $10 a sheet for OsB. Drywall was $11 a sheet. I didn't do it for cost, regardless. Drywall in a garage will be Swiss cheese in a year or two. You also have to hang every single thing on a stud. OSB is structural and strong enough to hang lots of things anywhere you want. You also don't bother with joint compound, taping, and texturing. Drywall is much more tedious to work with for a nice finished product. I debated the pros and cons with my father for a solid week as we decided which to pursue. I wanted a 100% house-like finished interior and wanted drywall. I am so glad I did OSB for the simplicity, strength, and ease of installation and no maintenance.
