Good Lord, my husband just brought a bred cow home today. I asked when she was due. He didn’t know. I grew up in the city. He has experience with this stuff but I’ve never had a momma cow. We have had black belly sheep in the past 13 years we’ve been together. Also knew nothing about sheep and those mommas came bred and were a heartbreak when they lambed. Most were full of parasites when we got them. They just looked old to us. Most lambed just fine but then either abandoned the kids, took them out in bad weather when too young and they left them hiding under something to stay dry and some died shortly after lambing. We lost most of the lambs. I also lost one mom who had not been able to get her lamb out and I did not have the knowledge to help her. I just stayed with her until the end. We sold the rest of the herd after getting them heathy when I realized that I needed to learn more about animal husbandry before hubs brought anymore animals home. I’ve learned a lot about sheep but not cows. So now I watch cow videos to help me learn more. I hope cows do a lot like sheep when calving.

Recommend you freeze leeks...just cut them up in 1/4 inch or less rings, stuff them in a freezer bag and freeze. There is no need to process them in any way, just wash, and dry and clean thoroughly where the green leaves meet the white neck. And by the way, I see Tubers/Americans who throw the green part of the stalk away....what a waste. I cut 3/4 way up unless the leaves have some damage....everything goes into the bag...I've been doing it all my life this way, and so did my mother. They will last frozen for 2 years, and I have a feeling they will turn "mushy" when you reconstitute them after freeze drying. When you fill the bags, fill to the brim. It's OK, you will be able to remove portions from any bag without any problems. we use leaks in every soup...here is my Winter Squas Soup Recipe: 1 large Waltham Squash or Red Kuri Squash (if you have Kuri (Hokaido squash) its the best, but any winter Squash is good. Peel, cube and bake. In a Dutch Oven, melt 1 stick of butter, add 1 chopped onion, 2x Leeks (cut up), and Sautee until Onion is glossy and Leek is limp. Add the baked Squash, 1 liter of chicken/vegetable stock, 1+ tsp minced Ginger (to taste), 1 tsp salt, pepper to taste, 1+ garlic clove minced (to taste)...now macerate everything with a stick or blender, then add 1-1/2 cups of heavy cream. Adding 1/4 tsp of pumpkin seed oil or Sesame oil finishes it off nicely (if you have it, but is good without), and sprinkle a few roasted pepitos (Pumpkin seeds) over each serving...but careful those oils are potent, add little at a time. It looks complicated but it actually goes pretty quick. Double the recipe for your family. You can freeze the soup too.

Chelsea, if you will take a vegetable peeler and take the outer part of the stalk off and cut it into 1 inch cubes. It’s as tasty. if not tastier than the top and just as tender, I actually like it better cause it has a crunch than I do the florettes

Your enthusiasm is delightful, always, ….. along with your love of all that is beautiful whether it’s animal, vegetable or mineral. I’ve always had a passion for the hearty zinnia and am in awe of how healthy yours are… no fungal disease on the leaves. I live in New England (Vermont) 🇺🇸 & have had very few years where I don’t have a that issue on one of my favorite flowers.

When I lived in Alaska our cabbages, broccoli and cauliflower got huge and the eating was wonderful. The pumpkins were always grown to prize size for the fair. I lived there for 20 years and we always had a wonderful garden. We had an 8 ft fence around the garden to keep the moose out. We also would make wonderful sauerkraut. We would also fish and dip net for salmon and canned it up. One year a guy had 250 lbs of salmon off a fish wheel that he gave to us. I canned every bit of it into pint jars. I had 2 canners going for 3 days. It was such a blessing that this guy gave this to us. I live in Missouri now and it’s so much harder to grow food because of the heat. I have got to try your broccoli salad it sounds so good. I love your garden. It looks like a serene place to be. Thanks for sharing all the things you do. Cheryl

I have a rather small backyard garden this year due to the heat earlier on. I lost quite a bit. I now have a shade cloth with works great. I am going to invest in another one in case it is a hot one again next year. I love watching your channel as I am in Calgary, and am encouraged by what we can grow here in our shorter growing season. I predict Aug 5th, but I honestly hope it is sooner. 😊

If your green tomatoes have a shiny skin, they will ripen. Dull skin will just go bad. Set them in a single layer on a box or tray to ripen. I did this a few years ago and we had ripe tomatoes for over a month. I find my biggest producer is an heirloom called Japanese Black Trifle. It is a roma shape but is a black with more meat than I have found in any hybrid. The flavor is so true tomato that most hybrids miss. I am in western Washington and have grown them in containers and the garden.

Oh my gosh yes the poppys are gorgeous. And yes holy moly the cauliflower and cabagges and so much more wow. Wonderful. Oh my gosh poor girl! My guess for fun August the 2nd and it was next day right after a special full moon so the baby will need a full moon name. Not sturgeon though this full moons name. But the moon was so big and bright and glorious. So mabye if a girl Glory. If a boy Moonlight. I love these little fun games Chelsea. I play them with my kids to have always. For years when they were wee. And now still do when they are young adults. Sauerkraut looks amazing. hugs as always.

Your gardens are just beautiful!! I love that broccoli salad. My recipe calls for golden raisens, but I usually dont have them on hand, so regular raisens or Craisens work really well. It also calls for sunflower seeds and shredded cheese. I dont like it as well with the cheese... but try putting cubes of apples in it!! Oh my gosh its good. I usually use golden delicious because it's my favorite and the skin is more tender than regular red apples. That wasn't in my original recipe, but its there every time now! I hope that calf is there by now. Because you're right... that CAN'T be comfortable!! I love your videos & appreciate the effort you put into them. Good luck with your tomatoes!! We like the Black Beauty zukes. What you refer to as cattle panels we have always called hog wire panels. Sauerkraut looks great. The cabbages are so juicy. I have never made mine in a jar like that before. I just use the same 20 gallon crock that my grandma & my mom used. I am going to try the jar method though. As loose as Thistle is in the back end she could be close, maybe 4 days. If she is leaking milk, it could be very close I say in that case 18 hours. Those are my guesses.

I make a similar salad using both broccoli and cauliflower. I love cheese, but prefer this salad without. We tend to use the food processor to pulse the veggies, cuz … old teeth. I also make a Brussels sprouts/kale salad. Shave or slice them very thin, add bacon, onion, dried fruit such as raisins or craisins and slivered almonds. Mix up a sweet vinaigrette. It’s delicious! The veggies are uncooked, by the way. My guess is in the night Aug 1.
