That was a huge otter. It was certainly the fattest otter I've ever seen.I hope the game Warden allows you to switch it out with a different one. When I was kid I would do some nuisance trapping for the local game Warden so he knew me pretty well.back then the limit for otters was 2. Each one had to be tagged before I could sell them. I caught 4 otters in the same day. He let me keep and tag them. Having a relationship with him made all the difference. He never questioned the veracity of the story. Two were caught in a abandoned beaver house. I thought there were beaver in the hut because the snow up top was melted. I trapped it for another two weeks and never caught a beaver. Not even a muskrat. I really appreciate your videos. Let us know what happened with the game Warden. Thanks.

In Maine we can keep the incidental otters during the beaver season
@camefromthenorth Жыл бұрын
So you don't get to keep the otter or do you just have a holding tag for them recorded then you still keep them?
@germantown842 жыл бұрын
What does the state of Minnesota do with the incidental catches?
@tesla1202 жыл бұрын
They are seized, and then auctioned off. You get a portion of the proceeds which amounts to like $1
@germantown842 жыл бұрын
@@tesla120 can just fur buyers buy the fur?
@tesla1202 жыл бұрын
@@germantown84 I'm not sure, they do public auctions for everything else they confiscate but I wouldn't be surprised if it was all just auctioned in bulk
@330Maniac2 жыл бұрын
I tried that, but the warden said you don't get anything.
@tesla1202 жыл бұрын
@@330Maniac I'll have to reread the section in the regs on the pelting fee they pay. Ive never had to go down that road but there's something in there about it. May not apply here 🤷🏼♂️

That was huge. Was he nice enough to let you swap out with a previous otter you had ?
@marktheo15632 жыл бұрын
You pushed him in the set walking & checking. When it's really cold & still on a night with no wind & the ditches,ponds & streams freeze here in w.n.y. they will sometimes freeze over clearer than glass. I dont trap much rats or beavers, but will walk these water ways to save time & distance & avoid thick brush,pricker thorns & vines as well as steep hills. I have often scared fully visible musk rats & beavers under the ice into other trappers sets & actually watched them get caught & knock an ear of corn out of mouth of 1 beaver when it did.

Question, first year trapping for me and I'm trying to deal with nuisance beavers blocking up culverts across the street at the mill pond. I have not been able to find anything but older abandoned runs, between taking the canoe out this summer and fall and walking the banks I cannot find a lodge or feed pile. Everything is iced over now, besides looking for the obvious signs what should I be looking for? Keep up the videos man, I have a lot more to learn from you as long as your willing to teach. Thank you.

I have found in those situations waiting until the ice is out and using a castor mound is upper effective. I have a pond I trap with supper steep banks under water and most my bank den entrances are more than 8 feet down. If not for castor mounds I would be out of luck. Hope that helps

There's probably no fish in the pond because of the otters. It doesn't take long for a family of otters to clean out the fish in a small pond.

Please weigh that big one before it gets picked up! I caught a 24 pound male 48" tip to tip unskinned, years ago. But I have seen they can be to 30 pounds, sometimes more. Had a huge female roadkill come in for mounting, I think she was 25 pounds. Just so big for a female. She also had 2 near term fetuses in her. I think we have a lot of big ones here, hardly any trappers, and most are K9 trappers due to the extremely high red fox population. The few dozen muskrats I caught over a bunch of years were all pretty big too, with some being monsters. A couple monster buck mink too. Beaver are scarce here for some reason, but we have more beaver than muskrats. Red fox, followed by raccoons, followed by yotes, mink, possums, grey fox ( can vary by area though), beaver, rats, skunks, weasels, in that order.
