I teach at an elementary school where our kids sometimes “take a break” in a calm area of the room if they are overly emotional or not following directions. The goal is to brethe, self regulate/“reset”and come back. Is that kind of “take a breaks” the same as the sign you used for “rest”? Great video-thank you!
@PearceDevin3 жыл бұрын
In my industry we use "to break/broken" as the sign for break time. When it comes to "broken-down" that is used for a roof/floor collapsing/sagging or tarp on a roof sagging with water and ice

Could breakdown as used in the video be used in the context of a person? I’m asking because sometimes I go nonverbal during breakdowns or overload and it would be helpful to describe.

The idiom "give me a break" as described here:www.myhappyenglish.com/free-english-lesson/2014/04/23/3-ways-to-use-give-me-a-break-english-idiom-lesson-mp3/ "Break it down": To explain something in steps, in a relationship "breakup": when two people break up. Break up: (of a gathering) come to an end and disperse. "after about an hour, the meeting broke up". Break down: can do a whole video on www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/breakdown (p.s. echoing Treasure Train)

I typically use your sign for "break down" but I have also noticed (and used it) with the palms facing towards you. You start with your pinky fingers touching and then move your hands downward a bit so that the rest of your fingers touch in succession. Have you seen it done in this way?
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
No, haven't seen that. Description seems more like a different sign altogether for things going to plan.
@ASLLOVE3 жыл бұрын
@@ASLMeredith Yes, I know which sign you are referring to. The one that I've seen is very similar except the hands collapse together at the end. I'll ask around at work and see what I can find out.

In ASL is the term being “broke” as in out of money, a commonly expressed slang term, or do ASL speakers only say “I have no money”, or do they have another term of slang ?
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Oh YES that's another good one, thanks! Will include in a 'part 2' video. To sign 'broke', you basically make a single chop to the neck (pinky-side comes together with neck)

Oh yes! That's a good example. You could use the third sign shown at 1:19 - for a pause/intermission in the day. (along with the sign LUNCH!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWq8Y4Sbitd9m68

@@ASLMeredith would you sign it as lunch break or break lunch? Sorry if this is a silly question.
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
@@BrittAlvey If just trying to say "lunch break" then could use that same order. Similarly, in the context of a sentence or story, you might sign BREAK first, and then sign LUNCH EAT, and then continue telling what you did next.

My autistic daughter couldn't make the break sign meaning to pause, rest work with her dyspraxia. So, could she use break apart as slang to mean "I need a break" when overwhelmed at school? She was able to do that one.
@loriesau5433 жыл бұрын
A "fast break" in basketball or other sport like lacrosse, means that your team suddenly gets the ball by error of other team, and your team "takes off" to score before the other team can set up defense. I would use "escape" or "take off" sign.
@ASLMeredith3 жыл бұрын
Ohhh thanks for sharing, Lori! I wouldn't have known that definition, so I learned something new :) those signs sound appropriate to me for that context, and/or using classifiers to represent the player's movement.
