I dont think most fans realize, they have so many injuries right now and the reason they're not doing so well is because they sold everything for bedard, if you want the first overall pick you have to be bad, really bad. If Crosby wasn't drafted to Pittsburgh, the penguins wouldn't be there. So give it time, they are rebuilding, they are being bad to get good.

Before Edmonton won all those first overall picks ... there was Pittsburgh... Crosby's draft year was after a whole lockout season... every team in the NHL had an equal shot at winning the draft lottery... and Penguins won... many claim the league rigged the draft for Pittsburgh to win because Pittsburgh was in bad shape business wise and having Crosby shadow Mario (he lived at Lemieux's for his first season.) 4 straight years: Flower (1st overall), Malkin (2nd Overall), Crosby (1), Staal (2)... and... Letang in the 3rd round of Crosby's draft year... Crosby was super lucky to get drafted by Pittsburgh ... lots of talent to grow with and surrounded by all star vets. I feel bad for Bedard... he's in a worse predicament than Lindros when he.refused.to sign with the Nordiques

Matthews was definitely considered a generational talent, as was Jack Eichel. He played on Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey in 2016 without ever playing an NHL game. In fact, if Matthews was born 2 days earlier he would've been eligible for the McDavid/Eichel draft and there were some who said he would've been picked before Eichel. The media was trying to develop a rivalry like the Crosby/Ovi rivalry. Laine was on fire before the draft so some thought he could challenge for first overall...at least that was the narrative.
@KyleMacSkill
@KyleMacSkill 4 ай бұрын
@cjlb49 Matthews made the Team NA team after being drafted, generational talents are players who are talked about years before bring drafted, like Crosby McDavid and Bedard were. Matthews wasn't in the same realm. Also the Ovi Crosby comparison doesn't even make sense because they were both #1 picks starting at the same time and both put up 100 point seasons as rookies which has never happened before in the history of the NHL. The talents I mentioned were all known to go first overall, so the fact that there was even any debate with Matthews is evidence he wasn't viewed in the same class. Neither was eichel so not even sure why you brought him up
@chelious1973

@@cjlb49Ah. No. Matthews isn’t a generational talent. Nor was he ever considered one. There have been 5 generational talents in the modern NHL era. Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby, and McDavid. Thats it. Not every player is. And contrary to what the video states, Ovie isn’t one either. But he is close as you can get. I would put Matthews in the same category. With reservations. Kucherov, Mac, Drai, Ovie also. They are close. Real close. Two things separates generational talents from everyone else. Their elite skill and hockey iq. They are playing checkers while everyone else is playing chess. A good indicator would be their assist totals or assists per game. Matthews, Mac, Ovie, have generational skill but not the hockey iq to go with it. Mac has shades of it though. Kucherov does no doubt have generational hockey iq, but not generational skill like a Mac, or Ovie. Physical skill. He is unique in that respect. But scary thing he is getting better as amazing as that may seem. He has that elite skill but he had to work to develop that. Mac, Matthews, Ovie for example naturally have it. I would say Jagr, Messier for example would be in a similar group. Bedard is considered one. We shall see but he is certainly playing like one. The term “generational, has been over used too much. It means the best of their era. Crosby dominated for his generation, McDavid his, now Bedard is a wait and see. Matthews is a fantastic player. Generational, not quite.

SO I am a hawks fan and am watching this happen live. In addition to what you brough up with injuries. 1. The Hawks are letting the young kids play to see how they do. For years this was a major issue. I Like Richardson as a head coach and Am glad the kids are being coached by him. 2. The Hawks have solid prospects. 6 of them were in the World Junior. 4 on Team USA, I believe at leaste 3 will be on the hawks In the next year or two. Nazaar (wing) might even play with Bedard. There are a few others in college hockey i am keeping my eye on that show promise. 3. The Hawks have been taking on teams bad contracts to get those prospects. Next season is the first they can use their salary cap space. Right now they have abut 8 mill in space if cap friendly is to be believed. 4. The Hawks are thinking long term. Building a core, then adding to it. I fully expect a large turnover of people on the ice while looking for all those peices as well as getting the kids to grow. In addition The Hawks started to show a physical style of hockey. I was impressed at the Hawks facing the Oilers (Jan 9, 2024). Lost 2-1 and only allowed 15 shots on goal. They physically made sure that the oilers knew exactly where they were and that they would feel sore the next day. If they can have their bottom lines play that way, then a great offensive line centered with Bedard should win many hockey games.

Yeah, I've never actually seen a true generational talent (forwards only) not score over a point per game average (minimum 40 games) in his rookie season. Not saying Bedard isn't going to be one, but I'm just saying I've never seen that player yet so Bedard might become the first. He was on pace for almost a point a game when he got something like 32 in 34 games and then started struggling a bit after that, just before his injury. The video is wrong though on one topic. Bedard wasn't the only one with horrible linemates/teammates in his rookie season for a generational talent to perform really well. Lemiuex was on a horrible team with very bad linemates/teammates and he still scored over 100 points in his rookie season. True generational talents will turn other players around him into "good" point producers even in his rookie season.

I've got a beef to pick with you about your analysis. Where did you get your stats to make your graph? Total points by top 5 teammates for McDavid's rookie year was 233 (Hall 65, Draisaitl 51, Eberle 47, Pouliot 36, RNH 34). Total points by top 5 teammates for Crosby's rookie year was 252 (Gonchar 58, Recchi 57, Leclair 51, Malone 44, Palffy 42). Total points by top 5 teammates for Matthews was 300 (JVR 62, Marner 61, Nylander 61, Kadri 61, Bozak 55). Your placement of these players on your graph is way off and I'm not sure where you get that the average production totals of the top 5 players would be 304 points. Also, McDavid didn't have Draisaitl dishing to him all year. Draisaitl started that year in the AHL then played with Hall when he joined the team. McDavid played a lot of time with Yakupov at the beginning of the year. Crosby's rookie year was impressive because he got 44 points more than his closest teammate. 3 of the top 4 point getters on the Maple Leafs were rookies in Matthew's rookie year. Plus, you say this is something that's never been seen in NHL history. But, you talk about Ovechkin in this video. The combined total of this top 5 teammates was 219 which I agree is more than the projected totals of Bedard's teammates, however, Ovechkin got 52 goals and 106 points in his rookie season. Finally, you say that if Bedard's teammates got 37% more points and that translated to his totals he'd be on pace for 110 points. What? He was on pace for 69 points before his injury. 69 X 1.37 = 95. Nowhere near 110 points. I love Bedard, but come on. Your math just doesn't add up.

The situation Bedard was drafted first overall into was similar to Taylor Hall and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Hall recorded 42 points in 62 games in his rookie season and peaked at 93 points in 76 games. RNH recorded 52 points in 62 games in his rookie season and peaked at 104 points in 82 games albeit that season was playing with McDavid. What Bedard was doing given his team situation prior to the injury was ridiculous and right on par with McDavid. While my pre season prediction of "97 points if he doesn't get hurt" is now out of the question for Bedard, I wouldn't be surprised to see 130 point plus season(s) in Bedard's near future if he's provided some teammates of even mediocre quality. Also can we just take a moment to recognize Petr Mrazek and Arvid Soderblom as the only two players (Bedard excluded) who are keeping that Chicago dumpster fire from looking like a bottom of the barrel Junior C team that's trying to compete in the NHL

@@gianmarcofidanza7173 Reichel has rarely played with Bedard for full games, and certainly not on a consistent basis to form a connection. He’s clearly going through a mental funk that he needs to play through with consistent minutes, more ice time, and better linemates. Grass is always greener. You named 4 prospects, but there is no telling if any of them will be top six players or even better than Reichel. Statistically, only 1 of those you mentioned is going to be an 82-game NHL player for his career. I mean Nazar just centered the 3rd line in his second WJC-not even top 6 for his 2nd WJC-that’s not good! Hayes looks to be a role player if he ever makes it. Dach is not doing better than Reichel did in the AHL, and why even mention Lardis at all?

Finally someone saying this stuff so bluntly (that I’ve seen). Bedard is insane. I don’t even think the people most hyped on Bedard have really grasped the gravity of him. The lack of support translates far more than just “lacking good players”. Chicago literally cannot sustain offensive pressure. Think of the chances any given scorer gets when his team can pressure in the o zone for 30-45 seconds. Almost all of Bedards points are individual efforts off the rush. It’s all he has: making plays off of a rush. He is SO limited in every way yet still producing beyond what any 18 year old should be. I said he’d get 40 his rookie year, and that’s before the injuries and the general lack of offensive production around him. And he still could’ve pushed for it if he hadn’t got hurt. Within a few years, Bedard will have a 70 goal season. And I think his playmaking might be even better than his scoring…

@@seen48 I did, and I watch the team. The Hawks are in the middle of a teardown-style rebuild and staying at the cap floor to gather early picks. I don’t agree with that sentiment. When I change the x axis to not start at zero, I’m basically zooming into the graph which better depicts the differences between stats. Nothing about his injury? I’d like to see Bedard have a little more modesty away from home ice. I know the trend lately is to taunt the local fans but that is not a good luck for a supreme talent like Bedard. We saw at the recent IHF that the US won. Teams would all look to the local Swedish crowd when they scored against their team. Conner should take the high road and simply celebrate with his line mates when he scores. Local fans can appreciate his talent much more when he’s not saying “Look I just made your goalie look stupid.” Few things say more about someone who is incredibly talented than modest demeanor.

After Crosby's 102 points, the next closest player was Sergie Gonchar at 56 points. Great roster indeed.... 🙄

I would make the argument that he was in the perfect situation considering the Pens were coming off a rebuild. He was surrounded by a bunch of Stanley Cup winning vets. Yes they were aging, but they were all still producing at a high level. Were they an elite team? no, but perfect for mentoring a young phenom. Factor in that Malkin would come in the next season and boom

Bedard's +/- is nearly the worst in the league and the rookies, and not it's not because of his teammates it's because when he's on the ice he's a giant defensive liability that any goal scorer would aim for. His overall contribution is a lot of hype but not depth.

The title of this video is just click bait and is very misleading. Bedard isn't mad. He gets it. All that buying a bunch of UFA's and making big trades would do is put us against the cap, likely creating problems down the road, and exhaust all the assets we have built up. Patience is key and there is no need to rush things, yet. Not even close, really.
