Would it blow your minds to know the song was a make-up song for the brothers' reconciliation after an 18-month break-up? Robin left the group in 1969 to go solo. They all three later said it was a result of immaturity, youthful egos, and first fame. Maurice and Barry worked as a duo after trying their sister Lesley as a replacement for Robin (lasted one concert-- Lesley realized she wasn't cut out for the music life and returned to life with hubby in Australia) The brothers missed one another acutely during the estrangement. Lonely Days was about missing their working together. All three had wives. "Where would I be without my woman" might be interpreted as "If I didn't have my woman, where would I be!? I miss my brothers!!"

Typical Bee Gees song? Keep listening and you'll discover there is no typical song when it comes to them, other than their harmonies , great lyrics, etc. They could do and did many different styles. That's another thing that makes them so fantastic

It's been said that Lonely Days is about the brothers' relationship and how they missed each other when they were apart. You can substitute the word "brother" for "woman" and totally get that vibe. They wrote Lonely Days and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart the same afternoon in their first writing session after getting back together. This was their finale at concerts until "You Should be Dancing" became the showstopper. When they did it live in concert in the 70's they really get into it!

After being broken up for almost 2 years, Barry said Robin showed up at his door and he invited him in the help him with a song he was working on. It was HOW CAN YOU MEND A BROKEN HEART. They then called Mo to meet them at the studio, where they recorded it, and also wrote and recorded LONELY DAYS. If you watch the official video for Lonely Days, they film at their personal homes and in personal autos, Barry taking Barnaby for a walk, apart at the beginning, but together at the end. They had missed each other. How can you mend a broken heart? Get back together with your brothers and make music!! So glad they did. Please put LONELY VIOLIN on your list for reactions.

Simply an amazing piece of work! Hauntingly beautiful with a powerful ending. In late 1970, just as I was getting into Top 40 radio, this came out of the radio speaker and I was hooked. Lonely Days was one of ten or so meaningful songs that stir up memories today...of what it was like to listen to REAL music. I never get tired of hearing this. Absolutely love your facial expressions! I remember the thrill of hearing this for the first time.

The genesis for this song and "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was about their time apart and missing each other. However, they wrote subtly, so that their audience could incorporate their own interpretation of the meaning. I like the contrast in sounds, beat, and texture between the verses and the chorus. They wrote "Man For All Seasons" at about the same time. This is another one where they used both Barry and Robin's voices in magnificent contrast, and the harmony by all is unmatched.

Mo has always been my favorite! He taught himself guitar, bass guitar, piano, organ, and then after electronic keyboards showed up he started working with them. He also plays drums and I have heard that he can play flute as well. AND he has a wonderful voice!

They were so young here, when miming was the done thing on TV shows. You can always tell when there is no orchestra on stage, there is echo and then they fade out at the end.. But this song is stunning....

LONELY DAYS incorporated the innovative structure and knack for changing tempos exemplified by the second side of The Beatles' Abbey Road album, released the previous year and a clear influence on this single. "Lonely Days" shifts back and forth between a piano-and-strings-dominated verse reminiscent of "You Never Give Me Your Money" and "Golden Slumbers," and an up-tempo stomping chorus that echoes "Carry That Weight"; perhaps as an acknowledgment of the debt, as the record approaches its fade-out, Barry's voice is filtered to sound like John Lennon's. Amazingly LONELY DAYS was written in a mere 10 minutes. To exemplify the strong influence, a previous BEE GEE'S manager heard the song in a restaurant and said it was one of his favorite BEATLES songs!

Lots of memories of hearing The Bee Gees on the radio and stereo back in the 1970s. A good friend of mine in high school, Susan, taught a dance class circa 1977-1978, and used Bee Gee music a lot in her class.

This song was actually written just after How can you mend a broken heart. They just didn't put it out right away. And yes, they were all married in 1970. Barry and his current wife Linda have been married over 50 years, not many in the music world can boast that. Barry took Linda and his kids on tour with him. Mo often took his family with him.

When this came out a lot of people thought it was a BEATLES song and if you think about it , it does sound like something Paul and John could have written and sung but it definitely is the BEE GEES through and though . Thanks for going back down the path to my youth these songs bring back such fond memories , the 60s and 70s were filled with so much musical and fashion genres . The bands and singers mostly were working class people who worked all week and performed Friday Saturday and Sunday nights until they had a hit and made the big time unfortunately they weren't all as successful as the BEATLES , THE STONES or the BEE GEES but it was an amazing time to be a teenager growing up with such talented artists . I've mentioned it before but please react to their younger brother ANDY GIBB and check out their song IMORTALITY written for Celine Dion and performed with her. You will be amazed .

My band covered this back in the 90s although we rocked it up a little bit similarly to how Van Halen rocked up Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman". We substituted the hand claps for floor tom and ride tom, used a little distortion on the guitars, etc. (we didn't have a keyboard). I've always loved this song.

You never knew which instrument Maurice Gibb was going to play next. The piano makes this one. Sometimes he played guitar, sometimes bass, sometimes various keyboards. He only sang lead on a few songs. Usually it was Barry or Robin. There's a lot of great stuff from the time frame you were listening to. Holiday and Massachusetts were a couple I liked.

I know you're a big Eric Burdon and the Animals fan I'm watching Ed Sullivan right now a show that was running 1966 and Eric Burdon and the Animals are on this show singing the song Don't Bring Me Down I looked it up on KZbin and it's on KZbin so this is the youngest version of Eric Burdon I've ever seen to date and I mean he's pretty dog gone young in this video so you might be interested in that it's the only reason I'm writing this little message here I know you like Eric Burdon in his music and that song Don't Bring Me Down as excellent It's one I hadn't heard before and now that I've heard it it's one of my favorites.

My background has provided me with a decent grasp on popular music. But this song really threw me off. When it was released, I was around 11 yrs old, and for the next 30 yrs or so, I would've sworn on a stack of Bibles that this was a Beatles record. The whole thing just sounds like something the Beatles would create. But additionally, Barry's solo near the end sounds SO MUCH like John Lennon to me. I discovered my error about 20 yrs ago when I watched a documentary about the Bee Gees. I was incredulous! Like, I was yelling at the TV, "No Way!" LOL!
