I'm new to soap making and really want to try it out myself but the measurements and everything seem so confusing to me. what would you recommend to watch or read to understand this and help me on my way to being a soap maker
@IDreamInSoap4 жыл бұрын
Hi Si, start with a very basic recipe, something with just 3 oils or so. There are quite a few basic recipes you can find on the internet, but avoid those with lots of oils or additives, you just want a few oils, water and lye. Practice using a soap calculator like soapcalc. Again there are quite a few videos that go through it, once you understand it then it's pretty straightforward. Once you are happy then have a go. Just do a very basic bar 1st, practice good lye safety and mixing everything together and learn how to spot trace. There are quite a lot of 'how to make a basic soap' videos around. A lot of people use Soap Queen, some of her stuff is OK, but she relies heavily on promoting her company (Brambleberry) and always soaps far to hot to allow you to be able to produce swirls etc, also a lot of their mixes etc seem to take a long time to unmould. But her beginner series if you ignore the temperature references (you want between 80-90F) and ignore the 'buy this from Brambleberry' all the time has some good information. I have some videos all about trace, water discounts and a series called 'you can make this soap' aimed at giving detailed instructions for soaps you can attempt once you have the basics down, here are the videos on trace and water discounts etc. kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5vUiox9lqyJrNk kzbin.info/www/bejne/pZC5dIyfedKCgNU

Why did you add the pumice at the end?
@IDreamInSoap4 жыл бұрын
The pumice is heavy, so I don't want it to all sink to the bottom, also it makes the batter quite thick, so I prefer to get everything else mixed in 1st so that can get incorporated well before the batter thickens up too much.

What to do if you have a cheap oven that cannot maintain low temps. How would you proceed after you mold your soap with out an oven. I normally do hot process so I’m unsure. I’ve seen people mention heating pad.
@sianmilne48794 жыл бұрын
It's not really necessary for soap to go through gel phase, I just leave my cp soap out on the counter uncovered and I've never had a problem with it!
@IDreamInSoap4 жыл бұрын
You can just cover your soap and insulate with a towel and leave in a warm place, this will help ensure it gels. Remember with the oven you do not need it to be on when the soap is there, just warmed to the lowest setting and then turned off will be fine. If you live somewhere warm you may find your soaps gel just om their own anyway.
@IDreamInSoap4 жыл бұрын
Hey Sian yes, you are completely correct, there is no NEED for a soap to go through gel phase, but some people (like me) prefer it I force gel on mine to make sure I never get a partial gel. As you say it's completely fine to just leave it on the side to do it's own thing (and actually better in with some types of soap)

Lisa, I love your videos. I’m going to try this. I have hops and would like to add them instead of the coffee grounds. Do you think that would be the way to change the recipe? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for your videos. They always inspire me.😊

Hi Sonya, gosh I don't know about the hops, they are quite papery aren't they (I don't really know). I'm not sure how they would react and/or if they would exfoliate or just be too fine if you ground them

@@IDreamInSoap I’ll let you know. I made it with hops. It’s curing nicely.

I recently bought 4 cases of diet soda( 36 cans / case) from amazon a few weeks ago. that wasn’t a cheap nightmare, if I say so. Guess I will have soda for 5years. LOL
