It felt like 5 scripts smushed into one so we didnt get enough time for each of the plotlines; making every story underdeveloped. It was very convoluted for not enough payoff. It also seemed like they were trying really hard to do a commentary on motherhood and women in general but they just completely ignore the fact that Lydia had a secondary mother figure in Barbara?? Like why didnt that ever come up in all the conversations Lydia has wirh Delia or Astrid? UGH.

After a couple minutes I stopped the video then went to see it. Then I came back to finish your video. And I agree with some of your observations and I have some of the same critiques. And I do agree, the second half was much better and felt it had finally turned into Beetlejuice again. Below I have a few critiques for those who have seen it. Spoiler stuff: I felt that they could have cut all of the Jenna at school stuff and communicated the same with acting and dialogue. This would have given them a little more time to flesh out Jenna getting sucked in by the ghost. Then my more serious disappointment, they get Monica Bellucci, who does a wonderful job, build her up as the great antagonist to BJ, then when they confront each other, rather than seeing any sort of genuine struggle between them, she gets dealt with ignominiously by a sandworm. I wanted more from her character. But Emma, I do agree with you. It's worth seeing, on the big screen, but it had an irregular set up before delivering the Beetlejuice goodness.
@theoneders20563 ай бұрын
yeah, Monica's intro to her character was so freaking cool and I had a big stupid smile on my face during that whole sequence. They could've ditched a few things to give her more screen time with BJ, and the way they got rid of her was lazy and not creative at all. Only way I'll be happy with that approach is IF we get a 3rd entry where she becomes the more center stage antagonist, now that they've ditched some of the extra characters on this 2nd entry.

*Minor Spoilers* I owned both the Carrie soundtrack and a bunch of Sigur Ros albums while I was going through my Beetlejuice phase so it's kind of surreal to now hear both featured on the soundtrack. The original Beetlejuice felt retro for its time so I don't mind them capturing a retro feel with the 70s this time around. Disco excess doesn't seem out of place in this universe. The Bee Gees Tragedy was an inspired choice because, although it's upbeat, it has spooky keyboards and pleading vocals. *Major Spoilers* I just figured that Lydia couldn't see her ex because of the way he died, the fact that they were already estranged, or maybe because her psychiatric meds were interfering with her visions. As far as Astrid is concerned, I thought that hitting her head after falling off her bike triggered her abilities. Again, the film doesn't really offer any explanation, but the first film also plays fast and loose with the rules, so I'm willing to forgive it. What bothered me more were the ghosts that escaped into the real world who are never referenced again. I believe that the Maitlands weren't featured because the filmmakers didn't want to utilize anti aging technology and because the fallout from the Rust shooting would have occurred around the same time this movie was being filmed. Still, it would have been more poignant had it been revealed that Lydia's character was inspired to become a ghost hunter because of her relationship with the Maitlands and how she was able to help them move on. It was a missed opportunity to add more emotional depth to her character.

I remember watching the cartoon as a kid in the early 90s thinking 'what happened to Adam and Barbara??'. They never bothered to mention them at all
@hailyrider50863 ай бұрын
A few thoughts. In Beetlejuice Barbara and Adam were the ones that threw the dance parties, not Beetlejuice. I'm wondering if the dance scene was like an homage to them being there with Lydia still even though they found a loophole. Also in Beetlejuice it was mentioned that anyone who died from self inflicted incidents became a civil servant. Astrid's dad was a civil servant hence the reason Lydia couldn't make contact with him other than entering that realm. Re-watching Beetlejuice after Beetlejuice Beetlejuice really connected the plot holes! 💚💜🖤
@BachelorMachinesTV3 ай бұрын
The thing from the original where civil servants in the afterlife are all people who committed suicide has been completely thrown out of the sequel, there are a bunch of characters for whom that is not the case, this is one of the things that bothered me.

SPOILER TALK to your spoiler points/complaints: -Davis and Baldwin: if they would've appeared in this movie, it could have been messy because now you gotta invest time handling their arc further and that wouldn't have allowed for that much time with new characters, and the fans would've had a meltdown saying the movie isn't giving us anything new and it's clinging to its past with the same old cast all the way around basically. Ghosts don't age, so it would've been awful for them trying to address their appearance as well. A tiny bit more conversation would've been welcomed, but them finding a way to move on makes sense since we do see the use of loopholes(wedding contract towards the end) and souls moving on(soul train). - Lydia's relationship with her daughter: this I agree with, they should've cut some fluffer scenes and plot points and focused more on the mother/daughter dynamic instead of spending unnecessary time with the fiancée. The whole sequence explaining how the grandpa died in his accident was not needed, and they could've just done a tragic and mocking/funny dialogue scene briefly explaining what happened to him and move on. -Ortega's character not seeing the Dad: I'm ok with them not explaining this and beating us over the head with it, we can just use our imagination based on lore and assume Ortega was such a strong non believer that it just didn't quite work, or even that she needed a catalyst to trigger her abilities to see ghosts, and the accident she has right before meeting the boy could've been it. The fiancee plot was dumb, I didn't mind his character, but they gave him too much time, the wedding whole musical act was too long and wasted time that could've been used for better things, and the way they "ended" Monica's character was lazy with it being the same exact thing that happens to BJ on the 1st movie. I REALLY hope that if get to work on a 3rd one soon, she gets the proper antagonist treatment cause that was wasted potential right there. I found myself often wondering where the hell she was during the movie. Oh and the whole dream sequence with Ortega and the baby at the end was really lazy.

Maybe I saw the wrong movie, but I did not like it. I think it felt like 3 incomplete scripts jammed together, plus they could've totally removed Winona's love interest and Jenna's dad. What I would've done......... After the ghost boy tricked Jenna into the afterlife he should've been allowed to roam free in the living world and cause chaos. That should've been the reason Lydia resurrects Beetlejuice, to first, save her daughter, then to go after the boy in the real world. Monica Bellucci's character should have been brought back when they were going to sell the house. They could've been moving out the furniture and found the finger BJ tossed by the fireplace from the original. Somehow, she could've been resurrected. Then she also could've killed Charles (Jeffrey Jones) instead of the lame shark bite. Beetlejuice could've had a great 3rd act stand off with her to stop her and could have eventually realized the real world is no longer where he belongs or wants to be and went away peacefully instead of him "doing good" then getting doublecrossed by Lydia and her family. It could have been a full change character arc for him and a way to finish off the story in full.

You’re not alone! I was so disappointed in this sequel! It not only felt like a major cash grab but seemed like the plots were all over the place, not even original , and the whole Dolores character literally could have been cut and it would have made no difference
@awoodfin39033 ай бұрын
@dmarie-i7q EXACTLY, glad someone else agreed. I SOOO wanted it to be great too! I actually think it HURTS if you watch the original first, it's such a BETTER movie. Michael Keaton was even better then too. I think they wasted Danny Devito and Willem Dafoe, and even Dolores was forced into the plot. That 2 minute marriage, poisoning, death scene was so rushed. They also had long, boring exposition primarily from Lydia's manager/boyfriend that just took me out of the movie. And the use of singing was OVERUSED, and not in an entertaining way. Like you said, cash grab!
@politefan81413 ай бұрын
The ghost boy roaming the living world could have worked if the film established he had a connection to the real world. As he's presented in the movie, I don't think it would have made sense. Having said that, I do very much like the idea of Belluci causing chaos in the real world. The way I would have done it is to introduce her as Rory's fiance who we discover later is a ghost that Rory resurrected while he was on the show. Instead of him being engaged to Lydia, he and Belucci could have been working together behind the scenes. When it's discovered, Lydia could have brought Beetlejuice into the real world to face off against his ex. So overall, I like your ideas, just would have executed them differently.

I love her but she didn’t feel like Lydia at all to me. She just reminded me too much of her character in Stranger Things. Just bc your a mom doesn’t mean you have to be boring/not goth😭 even her outfits were lackluster. In the original they were so wild and wacky! And this one she wore big sweaters 🫤 and even her hair just seemed kinda messy, not really styled. Ig it was partially the script/costuming but idk something was off about her and she just didn’t feel like Lydia to me😕

He said something like "I want you to live" (not a word for word quote), but I thought he meant: I check on you, but I want you to focus on your future, rather than lingering in grief etc. I loved the OG characters and their chemistry was great, particularly loved Delia. This put a big grin on my face and I'm still beaming. Loved the gory visuals, musical choices and gallows humor throughout, as well as the nods to Burton's work throughout. Michael Keaton was a blast and perhaps even more fiendish here than before. Winona Ryder and Jenna Ortega played their roles beautifully, though hats off to Catherine O'Hara for practically stealing the entire show. Heck, pretty much the whole cast had me invested. While a couple of twists were easy to spot and the CG was pretty cartoonish, I'd say the movie makes these flaws work in its favor. Went back and forth between a 9 and an 8 but going 9 for the fact that I had so much fun. You can tell they put their heart and souls (ha!) into making this. I'm definitely seeing this one again.

Hey Emma, always love your videos and reviews! As I MASSIVE Beetlejuice fan, funnily enough, I enjoyed the first half so much more than the latter half! The end was extremely anti-climatic, especially the use of the character of Delores. I appreciate the one line use of Adam and Barbara.. they could have left the house years ago for the living characters, so within the film and current day, they don't have an impact on the current characters lives. This is disappointing for the viewers, but does leave a "loop hole" for them to come back. My main issues were: *SPOILERS* introducing Beetlejuice so nonchalant - there is an expectation that viewers already know the character. Beetlejuice is less intimidating in those film- the horror elements are lessoned. He is less menacing and threatening. From the comedic "day-o" dinner party scene song to the cake dance song fell very very flat and was not funny. Anti climatic ending- what was the purpose of Delores to turn up and instantly be taken down by the Sandworm? Danny Elfmans score was less prominent which is what made the first film so special. They are my main gripes. Beetlejuice is my OG. #1. I appreciate the efforts. And I liked 70% of the film. Some of it just felt so disconnected from what made Beetlejuice a stand out film.

I've been waiting all year for this one i love the original so much. It's a shame they weren't quite able to recapture the nagic of the original but i didn't really expect them too after such a long wait. Thanks for letting me know it's still with seeing in theaters.

It was a fun movie. Not great, but enjoyable enough. It starts out slow and does get better as it goes

Never seen the original, and probably won't see this. I just like listening to Emma talk about films 😊

This film was a major let down and totally unequal! Some characters were totally underdeveloped.

this movie was so disappointing to me . winona’s character didn’t feel like lydia to me at all, her characterization was so off. jenna ortega was wasted potentional. i wish justin theroux’s character was cut out of the movie completely and there was more focus on the mother/daughter relationship. i also feel like this film doesn’t approach death the way that the first one did. everything just felt off

There is not a hell's chance of Alec being in a top Hollywood film after what happened.

It was a total disappointment. I will no longer pay to watch a Burton movie without thorough research. Super bummed cuz I love the first.

A lot of children grow up to make the same mistakes as their parents. I have relatives who've done that. It's pretty realistic, actually.

Adam Baldwin and Geena Davis are too old for the movie since the real-world characters have aged. Michael Keaton was hidden beneath the makeup and costume. Also, Baldwin hasn't been taking roles due to his legal problems.

i felt like they could have given some clever nod to what happened with them instead of a line.

This movie was absolute garbage, what a tragedy of a script!! The only positives I had were Keaton, O'Hara & the production design/efx

I never liked the original Beetlejuice, to be honest. I'm not a fan of Tim Burton in general. I think Tim Burton focuses too much on visuals and not enough on story.

it always make me laugh when these youtube "critics" think they know how to make a better paced movie then one of the best auteurs of our generation. I feel like david lynch in that one clip of a dumbass studio exec telling him his scene is too long, fuck off. film making is an art. you wouldnt tell them to cut out a piece of the mona lisa cause its "too big" and i dont think ive ever seen a film improve by cutting out exposition. Usually they ruin the thing : (Ex: Joss Whedons butchering of Zack Snyders Justice League)

Tim Burton? One of the best auteurs of our generation? That’s certainly an opinion. Regardless, you don’t have to have be a director to have an intelligent, well-informed criticism for a movie. Filmmaking is an art, but it’s one of the most collaborative. And even famous painters listen to criticism to become better artists. Sorry, not done, Tim Burton is not the writer, cinematographer, or editor on this film and almost no directors are. Lynch himself frequently works with the same editors and values their insight. The auteur is a myth.
