Before Rodney King verdict, LA remembers killing of 15-year-old Latasha Harlins

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots and civil unrest. The seeds of that unrest came before the beating of Rodney King by four LAPD officers and their acquittal in their first trial. The killing of Latasha Harlins and the court verdict came about the same time, and her story is synonymous with that uprising.

Even if she stole the orange juice- that would not justify this woman's actions. Like as black people we shouldn't have to say "but she had the $2 in her hand, etc." Like obviously she didn't steal but even if she did, nothing justifies killing a child like that.

It's unfortunate but that's what happens when you only pick people who have biases. That's why I'm glad at today's policing that they accept candidates of every skin tone gender no matter if it's a woman on a man and they also teach diversity training. Because a lot of people that don't grow up and diverse backgrounds believe it or not we grew up around people that look like us for the most part we only spend at school with people that are different ethnicities but we tend to gravitate toward people that look like that's why it's important to teach education.

@@AngelicoCiudad Here we are 31 years later and people are still trying to justify the murder of a black child. The eye witnesses and the camera clearly showed the Korean clerk assault Latasha first. There's no disputing that. Latasha was 100% within her rights to defend herself from that assault, and she did so with her fists. When the scuffle ended, she picked up the orange juice, placed it on the counter, and walked away with her money still in hand. There was no reason for that woman to shoot her in the back of the head, in front of other kids, as she walked away. Every single officer on the scene testified that there was no evidence Latasha was stealing anything.

There's more to the Latasha Harlins tragedy than most people know. In 1991 I was working graveyard-shift as a radio dispatcher for Universal Alarm in Culver City. We had armed response guards with cars that rivaled LAPD. Empire Liquor was one of our clients. I’d become well acquainted with this store. Every couple of weeks we'd get an alarm from them, and I'd have to follow-up with a call to get the details. Often the circumstances involved violence, robberies at gunpoint, or attempted break-ins. Usually I'd speak with Soon Ja Du's husband, Billy Du. One time there was a gang shootout between two cars driving past the store. Just prior to the Latasha Harlins murder, there was a gang shootout that spread into the store. I followed-up on that one. I called Empire Liquor, and a panic-stricken, Billy Du tried to explain what happened. He was just freaking out, crying and mumbling frantically as he recalled what had just happened. There were bullets imbedded in a couple walls. It was as if Empire Liquor was in the middle of a War Zone. I'm listening to him and thinking, "Man, do you really need this? Why don't you just move back to Korea?" But, I couldn't say it. I knew it was just a matter of time and something big was going to happen. Either they'd get shot in a burglary or gang confrontation - or something. There was just too much violence happening there. Soon after that call, I came into work, and everyone was talking about the shooting of Latasha Harlans. My fellow dispatcher, Charles, made the call upon us receiving an alarm signal from Empire Liquor. What he learned on the phone rocked him to his socks. I got to speak to him about it, and I could tell it really got to him. We were professionals - but, we had feelings, too. And all of us were way too familiar with the Du Family and the trauma that was building and building with every violent incident. What happened to Latasha Harlins was an unspeakable tragedy that should never have happened. But the Du Family weren't monsters. They were also victims of the violence that occurred regularly in that neighborhood. Unfortunately, a minor misunderstanding was all it took for Soon Ja Du to finally snap. I only wish they had thrown in the towel before this - and moved back to Korea.

I was for watching 30 years since ago and 20 double of years ago for myself about the rodney king beatdown by those 4 police officers brutality and latasha harlins got shot back of the head. The 1992 los Angeles California basically on this intersection between florence and Normandie Avenue in south central Los Angeles California. Throwing the rocks and bottles at those whose wasn't even black people, willingly and a beating down the racism people, looting & the Tom liquor store and those others in the same place like almost everyday. Gangs violence and racial tensions in south central Los Angeles California was overwhelmingly blowned full of war zone in Los Angeles California. Uprising hip hop music techniques and the Los Angeles riots just becoming the expression of the underground, relevant, revolutionary, evolutionary, trials and the history!!!! Making empowerment and education school themselves that know what it's about? Justice and freedom to the politics ruled to the government system was done in multiple times. Then. So yeah!!!! Goodbye rodney king and latasha harlins and Marquette my brother and sister!!!!

I've seen the footage, stop being ignorant and blaming this on being black in America. Latasha was a teenager and from what I clearly seen was actually swinging at this older lady first. Who knows what was said also because back in this era their was no audio footage. She clearly harmed that women and I still believe the Asian woman defended herself especially in a community FULL OF GANGS and that community always takes what's not theirs. Now shooting her in the head I agree but who knows was in called for... But in the end that woman shot her I feel because this teenage black girl assaulted her and maybe threatened her life etc... stop with colors, this was only a altercation turned deadly which is NO SURPRISE in those communities. Sucks it happened, we just move on.

Are we supposed to ask about their childhood first , is it our fault. Stop beating your children and actually parent them. hold up. I went and watched it slow motion several times. It’s clear that latasha smacked her when the owner tried to get the item back from latasha. Latasha smacked her several times really hard, unnecessarily extra punches, LATASHA GRABBED THE WOMANS ARM TO PULL HER in closer to hit her in the temple which likely caused the woman to be disoriented , the lady threw the orange juice like take it and leave and then latasha approached the woman with the orange juice threatening manner and the lady thought she was about to be beaten again, latasha was obviously heated and most likely threatened her life then latasha gave back the orange juice turned half way and then the lady shot her. No, she wasn’t some sweet kid. And at 15 you are capable of killing. Stop spreading she was this angel that doesn’t harm anyone. She should have left the item but she engaged TWICE, when she could have freely gone. And who knows lady thought latasha had a gun or threatened it.
