A 1930s Barco BR-5 Rammer compacts the ground in the most ridiculous way possible. It's powered by a zero-rotation 2-stroke motor.

As some others who have commented, I used a relative of this tool in the 1980s, a later descendant of this particular design, I believe. We still called them jumping jacks in the 80s, but what’s shown here is using the explosive force from the combustion chamber to directly drive the compaction hammer- the ones in use by the late 20th century had a few more moving parts- an internal combustion engine with a rotational output shaft and a drive mechanism like a monster reciprocating saw, which turned rotational energy into much more rapidly cycling piston strokes with lower rebound than this machine. Those accomplished the same amount of compaction as these (in narrow trenches and the like) through applying many more strikes per minute with slightly lower force, and might have been a bit safer in terms of crushed feet because of lower bounces and better controllability in some situations, but all the same, my 60 something year old body is now reminding me more strongly every day of some of the repetitive strain and vibration injuries I sustained and just worked through in my 20s and 30s, and some of the stories my wrists and elbows tell me these days definitely harken back to days spent hanging onto jumping jacks and pneumatic hammers.

Could be worse. I started working the fields when I was eleven, baling hay and picking up rocks. Started doing construction at fourteen. The football coaches loved me as I was 190lbs of muscle as a freshman, but I'm only in my thirties and I've had severe back/neck/hand pain for a long time. I was proud of my strength and that caused me to disregard my physical well-being. Ruined what should have been the best years of my life and I imagine when I'm 60 I'll be one of those hunched over old guys that can't even stand up

@@Immortalrounin i actually just discovered that and funnily enough i read a comment that fixated me on that completely irrelevant topic based on this... A LS swap pogo stick... And i just really feel into a hole and got consumed by how you would actually do something like that and more importantly what would something like that do? Like would all the cylinders fire at once in a then heavily modified and heavily strengthened LS engine? And what would that actually do to someone? How much acceleration would you get out of that? And what would the person look like after in two of the most scenarios i can imagine it's either you being turned into a ketchup stain or being a man with no more existing bones or will you first fall however high that engine could throw you and itself and then maybe be completely smashed in your already horrible form by a 400 kg LS swap pogo stick falling on top of you? Or Many more possibilities this could or rather can only have in killing, maiming or otherwise torturing people... You could use that as some crazy dictator execution methods like tying people to rockets like maybe for north Korea... Im sure it would look spectacular and horrific at the same time and maybe a bit dangerous as you may also be smashed by the minimum 400kg LS engine swap pogo stick. I now would like to see what that would actually look like and how that would actually act in maybe a simulation.
@Immortalrounin

@@toaster_gmbh I love people like you on the Internet. I a person like you on the internet believe The most important thing (I could think of) is the weight and the balancing issue because of the high center of gravity. so I would imagine a multi legged pogo stick 2 to 3 legs minimum. It probably wouldn't go very high due to weight but who knows. now onto fire all of the pistons simultaneously, it probably wouldn't work because it's a V-engine even with a special crank. BUUUT you could have a system that stores the regular ls energy into timed spring(s) then releases all the built up energy making it jump. If you don't mind horizontal movement you could copy the gears that Issus coleoptratus have and boom yous a hoping. I love trivial tops like this and would love to hear your feedback. Cheers 🍻

@@zombieregime Pffft, yeah right. Young people trust the science of engineering, whereas old folks would gladly build their houses on mud and clay if it were allowed. I constantly see old people angry at the engineers and geologists who tell them no. Some old dude goes: "Just build the damn shed and if it caves in and destroys my pool that's my own problem!" and then the geologist has to go: "Well if it caves in while someone is nearby, it's actually their problem, and if your pool drains into the ground, it's everyone's problem, so sorry but you need foundation." to which the old man invariably responds: "everyone has turned into pussies that want everything to be over-engineered for safety." and then I pack down gravel with a tool that can easily kill me while he bitches about "baby bumpers"

@@N8Dulcimer ha! And they deserve the pay they earn) to build his brick shithouse on the shittiest ground possible, after it falls down a hill in the next rain, into someone elses house, he tries to sue the original company! Had a warehouse job many years ago that required steel toe. I bought steel toe shoes not boots. My boss did not think they were steel toe and told me he was gonna get the steel toe checker. He came back with a huge hammer and slammed it into the toe of my brand new shoes. Left a huge scuff mark and did no other damage to the toe. I was allowed to keep them. More comfortable than boots but if I was gonna work in an environment again that requires steel toe id get boots because of the extra support
