BEFORE watching this lesson, maybe you have questions about how to use before vs after. AFTER watching this English lesson, your questions should be answered! In today’s English grammar lesson you will learn how to use time clauses with before and after in the simple present to describe daily routines.
Before is used to talk about an event that happens earlier than or previous than another event: Before I go to bed, I brush my teeth. I check my email before I teach English lessons.
After is used to talk about an event that happens later than or after another event: After I eat dinner, I study. I take a shower after I exercise.
Grammar note: Before and After are used to introduce time clauses in your sentences. To make sentences with before or after you should follow the grammar formula: Before or after + subject + verb + object + comma + subject + verb + object.
Ex: Before I go to sleep, I read a book. After I finish work, I watch the news.
You can also reverse the time clause and the main clause with the formula: Subject + verb + object + before or after + subject + verb + object.
Ex: I buy groceries before I cook dinner. I wash my face after I wake up.

Hi JeN！How are you doing？ I'm fine as usual． Couldn’t be better！ My daily life is like below． After getting up around five，I drink a cup of coffee as a pick-me-up every morning without fail． And then，I learn English for about two hours before I eat breakfast． After having breakfast，I study English on and off before lunch． Although I had some plans to go to popular sightseeing spots before COVID-19 restrictions， we are not supposed to leave our homes to go out due to a state of emergency． However，as many people are fed up with staying at home doing nothing，they went to a lot of popular sightseeing spots during what is called “ Golden Week”． I found about that on TV news and after watching TV，I've made three compositions about the situation． So，I'd like you to give me some advice on these sentences． Which essay sounds natural the most？ ①A lot of popular sightseeing spots were inundated with quite a few visitors all over Japan during Golden Week． ②A lot of popular sightseeing spots were inundated with quite a few visitors during Golden Week all over Japan． ③A lot of popular sightseeing spots all over Japan were inundated with quite a few visitors during Golden Week． Have a good one！ Ikuo Suenaga from Japan．

I am sorry that you weren't able to do anything special to enjoy Golden Week, but I am glad that you stayed safe and listened to the advice / followed the rules as suggested by the government. Many people are sick of lockdowns and being forced to stay inside, but hopefully this situation will end soon as more and more people are able to get vaccinated. ☀️ As for your sentences, the third one is the best. The reason is because the section of your sentence "all over Japan" is giving more information about the sightseeing spots, and as a result that information should be as close together in your sentence as possible. ⛩

If you want to talk about what happened on a particular day, you can follow the same basic formula from this lesson, but use the simple past form of the verbs: Subject + past verb + object + before or after + subject + past verb + object. For example: I bought bubble tea after I went grocery shopping today. Before or after + subject + past verb + object + comma + subject + past verb + object. For example: After I ate dinner tonight, I took a walk. I hope that helps🤗

It is possible to use before and after with the simple past, but then you wouldn't be talking about routines. Simple present is used to describe habits and routines. If you wish to use before with the simple past, the formula would be: Before + subject + past verb + object + comma + subject + past verb + object. Ex: Before I went to sleep, I read a book. Before she ate dinner, she washed her hands. You can also reverse the time clause and the main clause with the formula in the simple past: Subject + past verb + object + before + subject + past verb + object.
