Had this watch... wanted to use it as my dress watch. I love you Teddy and I think you are always careful and cautious about hedging with some of your opinions (Obviously, I am projecting some of my own thoughts and you may be more on the fence about what I am going to talk about than I think with respect to how you truly feel). My biggest issue was exactly what you were alluding to. The watch does fit much larger than its specs. Like you said, the lack of a bezel makes this thing bigger. The other thing that makes it sit up higher is most of the thickness is coming from the back of the watch. Instead of either a domed crystal or a bezel that slopes down on the sides, it is a completely flat top - meaning all 12 mm comes from the back making it sit more like a 14 mm watch which gets it well out of my dress watch thickness comfort zone. You can see how aggressively the lugs curve to the back when you look at it from the side view and this "design feature" makes the whole watch seem even more like a hockey puck rather than a dress watch. Anyways... I agree with my love of the sistem 51 movement. This watch isn't bad, but there are soooo many better looking "dress watches" and if I were to go with a swiss dress watch from Tissot - I would pay extra for the Tissot Gentleman and dress that up as it is more versatile as an everyday-er, has better proportions, is very mildly slimmer, but would sit a tonne better, has a silicon escapement and 80 hour power reserve. And yes everyone... the 21 mm lug to lug is present in both... sorry

The black dial swissmatic was the first swiss watch I ever purchased for myself a couple of years ago when I first got into collecting. I have since sold it, but during the year plus I owned it I wore it all the time, accuracy was fantastic, and the leather strap was extremely comfortable considering the $275 I paid for it. They are definitely a great way for someone to get into swiss watches. Great video Teddy!

I have this exact watch. Normally I purchase tag heuer. Seen this in the store one day and for the price I thought I’d purchase it. Looks good on the stainless band but even better on a black leather strap with a butterfly clasp. I don’t wear it all the time but every now and then it gets some wrist time.

Quick question... I have the same model but with quartz movement. How long can I keep it brand new, I mean with the battery inside? Some ppl say quartz watches should not be kept with a battery inside. But then how they store them in the shops for monts or even years? Should I keep it with the battery in or?

fashion watches have been regretful for me why? I bought a USPA watch on dial they mentioned with Japan movt and inside was a singapore movt not only that its polish just got away all thanks to my wrist sweat. The reason i bought it coz of stretch bracelet and one of my friend in my school days wore that and teased me. So bought it on my 16th birthday still the battery is working although 4 years have passed and it was also the watch which i wore it on the occassion of my school farewell

I've found that the power reserve is 80+ hours in this watch... maybe they didn't want the swissmatic to have more power reserve than the more expensive and refined powermatic 80, so they stated 72 hr, but I think it has close to 90 hours of PR.

Great info. The dial is very bland...almost looks like it was printed on a piece of paper. Mine ran nowhere near 72 hours so I returned it for the Tissot Luxury Powermatic. I did not buy it through Teddy and perhaps the outcome would have been different.

I liked the fact how you said that the watch movement is probably not for a lifetime. Why? Because Tissot use rivet to lock in the plates, essentially, it is not repairable. Just pass this and go fo 2824-2 movement.

This has been my first automatic watch - but I sold it after just 3 months. Liked the „bauhaus“-y look of it, but the dial seemed kinda flat to me (especially compared to my Nomos now). The Sistem51-caliber is really reliable for its price (very steady -10s/day), but it‘s not one to last: Because of the way it’s built, no watchmaker will be able to service or repair it - except for throwing it away and slapping a new one in.

Great review as always Teddy, but I'm not a fan of this watch at all. A managing director in my office had this watch, and the rice-beads bracelet did not look well made in person. The size, dial style, and extended lugs also gave off the vibe of a cheap fashion watch. For a guy in his 50s making VERY good money, I always wondered what he was thinking since this piece is more aimed at the younger crowd as you mentioned, and he could have easily bought a luxury watch or at least a more classy (in my opinion) Tissot model or entry level watch. But to each his own I suppose. Still nicer to see than the 80% of guys in the office with the same Apple watch/Fitbit and then the remaining 10% with a MVMT/DW/MK watch

Swissmatic and Sistem51 are rigid & not durable. Before Sistem51, Swatch had automatic watches, yet not as expensive. So the all-machinery movement cost efficiency is not passed down to consumer. Likewise for Swissmatic if this cost US$450.

The case back says 30m water resistance, but the text on the screen at the beginning of the video said 100m. I nearly thought about the watch until I realised the poor rating. 30m basically means do not get it wet. That means taking it off every time you wash your hands. 😢

Get a fashion watch if that’s what you want. People can get whatever they like and there are plenty affordable fashion watches out there too not only overpriced ones like Daniel Wellington, especially off of Aliexpress you can get some great deals on great quality watches with Sapphire crystal, Seiko NH36 etc. Tissot is great but why not have both a fashion watch and a Tissot? I have a Jaeger Le-Coultre Memovox and a Hamilton Khaki Field but also have plenty of fashion watches I enjoy. 🤷🏻♂️

I liked seiko initially because of the huge internet fan following and buzz... But now i think tissot makes the best watch when it comes to bang for the buck!.. the biggest advantage is that they have a same model with a quartz movement. Seiko is overpriced of the features and doesn't even use a sapphire crystal! I will never buy seiko again
