Hi I am 69 years old. I had a heart attack 1 year ago. I was a fairly decent cyclist for my age. The heart was a shock for me. I had it while out cycling. After a year of many trips to various specialist and many medications. I am sad about my diminished physical condition. Time to fight back. Calisthenics seems to me to be a good path. It works for the time of Covid, I can do it in my garage. Thanks for your instruction. Seems perfect.

Hi Mark. I'm 59 years old, and also a cyclist. I haven't had heart issues, but I've sometimes wondered about the possibility of a heart attack like you described. I did, however, have a freak accident on my bike four months back and broke my clavicle, which made me reconsider my overall health and exercise routine. I too am just started on my calisthenics journey. As a cyclist I overdeveloped some muscles (quads) and left many other muscles weak and neglected (especially my core). I'm hoping that calisthenics will balance out my whole musculature, improve balance, etc... I know I'll have to dial back my cycling to make room for the calisthenics training, but I think I'm good with that.

Loved it! Thank you! I just got started on calisthenics and I'm couldn't find good advices for begginers. I'm 26, and I'm impressed with myself because of the weakness and inflexibility that I have. I also thank you for this video, because I found it very help and trustful. The amount of videos with those guys super shredded is incredible. I'm not trying to take out their credit, but they belong to a fitness industry already and I was looking for someone neutral like you. I'm aiming for a full body control and health, and I hope that someday I can help someone like you did with me. PS: I'm from Brazil. I apologize if my english isn't in its best shape. I'm also trying not to use a translator at all because I'm trying to learn how to speak english too. Thanks!!

PE class in middle and high school poisoned me to this kind of body weight mastery. I just retired at 65 after 14 years of disability leave. Yoga got me back on my feet and I have been able to put down the cane. 41 years after an auto collision that broke 11 of my ribs and gave me a near death experience, I am working toward increasing my physical mobility through Yoga. I see that I can incorporate your lessons into my practice. Thank you.

Gotta learn how to lever and master handstand I boxed and did a lot of pushups but I can’t even kick up to a handstand But i can hold a headstand from frogstand for 30 seconds I just can’t push-up my self all the way to the top... I can’t lock my elbows out and get my elbows past 90 degrees I’m still in pretty good shape too so I hope I can get a handstand down soon I hope it doesn’t take me more than 1 month But hey I’ll keep at it as long as I need to we all start somewhere

@minusthegym so to tip #3 one of the cheapest tips I have for folks to improve their grip strength without changing their existing equipment is to purchase a swimming pool "noodle" take a razor blade and slit one side down the middle so it can be opened up. Wrap it around the bar and fix it in place with some athletic tape or electrical tape or a couple zip ties. This will give any standard barbell,dumbbell, pull-up bar, etc. a thick grip that makes your grip work like crazy. Nice thing is these things cost like $2 and are so long that they can be cut up into pieces and cover multiple bars.
@MinusTheGym
@MinusTheGym 5 жыл бұрын
wb5mgr that's brilliant! I've noticed thicker bars are much more challenging and that's a really creative way to make the bar thicker. Thanks for sharing. I"m going to try it :)
@wb5mgr
@wb5mgr 5 жыл бұрын
Minus The Gym another good way that I did not mention for smaller items like a dumbbell is to use a bicycle or motorcycle hand grip. That will help you build up to the noodle in small increments. As you want it to get a little larger you can wrap the bar with hockey tape and then put the bike grip over it. That way you can grow it slow. Sometimes the noodle is too thick for folks to make the large jump from a 1" bar straight to that late of a grip.

Tip 7, very interesting about working out on an empty stomach. I always used to go running early in the mornings because as a type 1 diabetic it saved me the carbs/insulin dose which can get very hard to get when doing exercise straight after. And I always felt great doing it! Then I got into resistance training and learned more about nutrition and started eating before exercise. But now that you say it, I think I felt better with no food before training. Might go back to that then :)

Always exercise while fasting. Weight training while fasted will create muscle mass. Fasting triggers HGH (human growth hormone) which is responsible for muscle growth. So ectomorphs also should exercise while fasted.

Fantastic video, all great tips. The only problem I have with your advice is that somato-types have been debunked ages ago. There is no such thing as endomorph, mesomorph etc. Everyone has different bodies, but at the end of the day it's all CICO (Calories in calories out). I advise you research on it! :)
@KomangTYasa
@KomangTYasa 5 жыл бұрын
facts
@MinusTheGym
@MinusTheGym 5 жыл бұрын
Neko Tajni I agree it all comes down to CICO, but CICO all comes down to BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate), meaning how many calories a person burns at rest. Some people have very high BMRs and burn calories like crazy. These are the hard-gainers who need to eat more to gain mass (they also tend to have smaller appetites, from my experience training them). While other people can have a much lower BMR (like myself) and can gain mass quite easily. Whether you label it ecto/meso/endo or something else, varying BMRs do exist, it's a fact of exercise science, and it will impact the way someone should train and eat to reach their goals.

Its kinda nuts how much stretching can help alleviate the pain, recover posture and get you back on track. Went from not doing pull ups for years cause I was scared of hurting my shoulder to 3 sets of 7 on my back days and I feel great again. Hopefully I can get back to the good ol 3 sets of 20.

In response to your commentary on exercising while fasted, I recently did a keto diet and when you are in full ketosis, you will never run out of fuel. I did hours of yardwork with my sister and her boyfriend one day. After four hours, they were exhausted. I wasn't. This is because you will be burning your fat stores for energy rather than sugar you store in your body.

Hey there, new to your channel, but really good stuff. If you're trying to build your channel though, maybe a couple of these suggestions might help. Just a disclaimer, I'm not a youtuber, but I watch a number of channels. Do hope to do my own at some point. So I've been kind of analyzing the ones that seem most successful. First, at the start of each video, quickly introduce yourself and mention your channel name -- yes, even though you have a nice animation, it still makes a difference from what I've seen on other channels. Second, skip the typical "bro" greeting. Saying, "What's up guys?" creates distance, as it's meant to, but what you want is to bring people in. You seem to want to create something of an intimate atmosphere, would greet somebody in a real mono-a-mono situation, "What's up guy?" Probably not. How do you greet people in real life that you're comfortable with and care about? Maybe try something short and to the point like, "Hello again everybody, I'm Ryan, welcome to Minus the Gym, where we [do the main purpose of the channel]. In today's episode we're going to dig into [whatever the episode is about]. Let's get started...." The text description of the video is actually pretty short and sweet, says exactly what might have been saidt. That would have been the makings of a good intro imo. Third, I dig your relaxed "yogi" vibe, but I would suggest a little more intensity / intention at the very beginning of the video. Not panting and on too much caffeine like other workout channels. Not your style, which is pretty obvious, and a refreshing change. But maybe just try expressing outwardly some of the enthusiasm that is already apparent that you have for what you're doing? Finally, you're sharing your journey, which is great. And so there's a lot of "I" (meaning you) in your testimony. But I'd also focus on adding more "we" and "you" to that, to emphasize how you're on that journey "with" the people that are following you, and to demonstrate how you're sharing your experience in order to help them achieve "their" own goals, which of course, you are, and thank you for that. Hope this might help brother. Good luck!

Timothy Smith wow! Thanks for taking the time to type all that up for me. Very much appreciated. Sounds like great advice and I'll definitely put it into practice. And best of luck to you too when you start your channel :)

@@coal_91 I'm familiar, and it's a channel for jocks. Nothing against jocks, but a very different format and vibe with all the grunge guitar and the ever breathless mc. Not chill at all.
