About color palettes: When you start, don't try to master everything the color wheel have to offer. Focus on *analogous* colors. That's what's shown in the video. The simple rule is that *once you choose a base color the shadow go toward "cold" colors, and highlight goes toward "warm" colors* . It's a simple enough rule to get started, then it's up to you to build your artistic sense.

Been a hobbyist pixel artist/game developer for a while now, and while there are more tutorials out there that go into more depth on even the technical things you discussed in the video, I learned more in the last 20 minutes than I have in a long time. Your way of looking at things is so pure and simple but it cuts right through the bs into the important things. (And trust me, I have a BA in bs. I know what I'm talking about :P) Fantastic work! Hope to see more.

What a superb vid this is! I am a complete novice in this field and this short twenty mins has highlighted so much, it's mind boggling, but in a fantastically exciting way. The different graphic styles alone are an education in themselves but the whole idea of just looking around you to see how nature does it and then how to translate that into pixel art - it just blew me away. Massively informative, intuitive and very well put together. Just superb. Many thanks for uploading - this will be a great point of reference.

I downloaded piskel and used it like you suggested, and it's almost perfect for what I needed. It was also free. The controls are pretty simple and intuitive with enough options to do what I want, but no unnecessary clutter from tons of options I don't need. I really appreciate not having to dig through 400 different options to find the 10 I need. I am going to use this to make sprites for RPG Maker MV, and you can import the sprite sheets and such right into the program, and it already knows how big they should be. That is so convenient. I loved the self updating color pallet, and the built in animation functions are great. The only things that annoyed me so far, were the fact that you can't flip a selection (horizontally or vertically) without flipping the entire layer. I found a work around for this, by just making a special FLIP layer that I can copy and past things into for flipping. (it's a pain, but it works.) Another thing is I wish that the alpha brush (to erase things) was right next to the color selector instead of inside of it. (or in addition to inside). Going into the color thingy to pick the erase is annoying. As is clicking on the erase button every time. Also it should switch back to your pencil after selecting the color in some easy way. Just minor gripes about the interface being a bit clunky. But overall, I'm very satisfied and this is exactly what I needed at the price I can afford.

To anyone who is wanting to become an indie game developer: *Good luck!* I'm thinking about making a game aswell, however I think it'd just be a side thing. I've been doing normal art for a few years but I think it'd be a lot easier to do pixel art instead of normal art. I'm also gonna have to learn how to code which is gonna suck, but hey, if I can at least try, you can probably do it! :)

If you go with Unreal Engine + Blueprints you won't need to code except you are going for some completely groundbreaking mechanics. Just drag and drop stuff. But there is the possibility to write your own physics and such in C++ but as I said, I don't really think it is necessary except for the own ego.

Hey man, this was awesome. It took me several YT searches and ended up here by sheer luck. Your video was by far the most enjoyable I've watched since I started looking down this rabbit hole of wanting to dip my toes in the pxel art waters. Cheers to you, thanks

Jeez, I came here to learn the bare basics to start working with pixel art, ended up learning about life. I hope the motivation you just gave me sticks out for long enough for me to learn this new skill. Will make sure to come back here often to remember what it is that I'm doing. Sincerely, thank you for this.

Thank you Alvin for a brilliant video. The hard work and passion you put into it really shines and it had so many amazing moments of inspiration and realisation for me. That poem at the end about art was just incredible, I was expecting you to say it was from some famous poem at the end and when you didnt I was like wtf that was his own words?! You really are a great content creator. Keep up the good work man

Came back to the video after applying everything you talked about. It’s the perfect video for someone starting out in my opinion. Helped me go from zero to level 3 goblin - not quite the protagonist yet but I’m levelling up. But in all seriousness, I have been using assets from unity store for a long time as I never thought I had any artistic ability but this video helped me a lot. I grinded and I’m making art that is somewhat game worthy so thanks a lot. Hope you have a nice day!

As someone who really enjoys art as well as coding, I recently discovered pixel art and its something I really want to try. I've never been interested in digital art until now, and I've always wanted to be a game dev. So my goal for 2021 is to learn pixel art! And maybe one day I can make my own game :)
