This is an excellent video. I've been using grills and smokers for quite a long time, but I recently moved in with my friend and he never uses his egg which I think is a tragedy so I'm about to start using it instead lol. I knew there'd be tips/tricks compared to various other smokers though so had to make sure I checked out a video or two before I go out and put my ribs out there thanks for the info Todd

The only knock i have on the royal oak lump charcoal is that sometimes the factory will add a rock or two to make it hit weight since it's too much of a hardship to fill it with the charcoal. I have complained to them to receive a coupon for 15 dollars off, I happily used it for one of them extra large bags that last a couple of months. I love my big green egg and never will own another grill from another source ever again.

I can't get the fire to stay lit, even with the vents open. As a result, the BGE won't heat. Any tips?
@toddsdirt1
@toddsdirt1 Жыл бұрын
I am sorry that I have not responded sooner. I had a friend who had the same problem, and I suggest two things. First is make sure there is no ash or Charcoal that is blocking the sides. Obvioulsly clean out the bottom of the grill. The second if it is new the inter sides could of been put in wrong and that is blocking the airflow. You can take them out and put them back in and see if that helps.
@plips71755
@plips71755 3 жыл бұрын
I think he forgot to read about keeping it clean. His is pretty dirty and greasy. Because of it having such thick sides and holding heat so well, adds to the need for burping. I think it would be best to go to the Big Green Egg website and follow their directions before you start experimenting or using someone else’s tips and tricks. Look at the Big green egg accessories like the pizza grill, wok, and others. I don’t know of much you can’t cook on it. I like their charcoal lighter better than what he is using.. you can just sit it down in there, no need to hold. But my favorite is using a charcoal chimney to get it started (15 minutes and start cooking). And I absolutely agree … use lump hardwood charcoal - I prefer oak but some folks like hickory, etc. As he says, ABSOLUTELY DON’T USE CHARCOAL LIGHTER. There is no need. A properly lit chimney will have you ashes over and cooking in 12-15 minutes with just a sheet of paper in the bottom, the charcoal in the top. When ashed over, pour it in and set to go. But the little charcoal cubes starters or the electric starters work well too. Check their website out. I agree with him too on the water tray/bowl - even for grilling. I suggest bringing your meat up to room temp, leave out sitting with the seasoning for 30-40 minutes on your counter. It isn’t going to spoil. Now fish and shellfish is different - keep that ice cold but pork or beef not an issue for under 45 minutes. And it’s inside where it’s cool and protected - but that bringing it from 40 frig to 70F room can make a big difference. The Big Green Egg YT channel has tons of videos for cooking every kind of meat from shrimp to beef, ribs, brisket, crown roasts, prime rib, and for cooking your favorite Chinese, Thai, etc on the wok that fits it. And you can get that high heat you can’t get inside your house with an electric cooktop, and it doesn’t make the mess a high heat wok inside will. I think it makes better pizza or at least just as close as a brick oven. You can cook bread, desserts, etc. And you can beat the taste of meats. Holidays roasts, turkeys, briskets, etc. great. Of course it all depends on how big of one you get as to how big a piece of meat you can cook. But you can always cut up a big Turkey into pieces and cook it faster than whole. Look at all the videos- Big Green Egg YT channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5bKnJ5_mZuWj7M Lots of tips and tricks, what’s available, etc. Their website is: biggreenegg.com

As everyone mentions, it's a good video for newbies. I had an Eggniter and what a POS. The 1st stopped getting hot within weeks and I brought it back to place of purchase. I needed to wait about a week or so for BGE to replace it under warranty and the same thing happened with the 2nd unit. Now I just use fire starters. A chimney works okay, but it generates ash from the burned paper. Never used a water pan with a BGE, but did so with my Weber Smoky Mountain. Bottom line: a kamado cooker is the most diversified outdoor cooker you can use ...dial it down for low and slow or crank it up to 700° for perfectly seared steak or pizzas and everything else in between. I absolutely love my BGE and cook with year round. I recently made a new table for it, replaced the gasket and changed to the new hinge. Been cooking with my BGE for over 4 years ...best gift I ever got!

I know this video is prehistoric at this point in internet timeline terms but thank you. I've been drooling over these for a decade or so now and this year my wife surprised me with the XL. It is intimidating to start it up the first time as I've never had a grill that I paid more than a hundred bucks for. I've watched a few of your videos now on using it so I'm looking forward to firing it up this weekend for the first time. Yes it's October but I regularly shovel my grill out and cook in the snow.

How to lower temperature on big green egg
@toddsdirtseasoningsandmari9800
@toddsdirtseasoningsandmari9800 3 жыл бұрын
Terrence I talk about it in the video. The more wide open the dampers on the top and the bottom, the hotter it will be. The flip side is to lower the temp, you do the opposite. You make the dampers on the top and the bottom, you make the opening smaller. Really something you have to play with. In the video I show you how to lower temp for BBQ and for higher temp cook. I hope this helps.
