JayZ, I know all what you just "explained". But a beginner would still be baffled with all the technical terms you used. You didn't explain what the x16 and x8 on the PCIe slots mean; you didn't explain what dual, triple and quad channel DIMM mean; you mentioned RAID, but didn't explain what it means; you didn't explain the difference between a 87 and 97 chipset motherboard; .... Far too vague. I know what you're talking about. People who assemble their own pc understand you. But the people you're adressing here, the beginners, don't understand squat.

Beginner trying to gather info to build my first PC here, I'm a COMPLETE tech noob and it seems almost impossible to find videos explaining the basic of basics in PC building. Wtf is a DIMM anyway? I barely know what RAM is.
@STR33TSofJUST1C3
@STR33TSofJUST1C3 8 жыл бұрын
Simalacrum RAM is random access memory. In short, it's used to store active tasks you're pc is running at the moment. The average home pc would occupy about 1.5GB of background tasks on this RAM, to give you an overview. RAM modules are 13 cm long (the newest DDR4, though) and they fit into the DIMM slots located on the top right. DIMM stands for Dual in-line memory module. That's about all you need to know about that. Truth be told, I learned pc building by self-exploration. I never read anything online, never watched a video. I just looked up parts, tinkered with my ancient Pentium which had a Windows 98, and I got the basics. I'm still learning, though. Assembling a PC can be as quick as 30 minutes, but there's still a lot of technical stuff, such as server related stuff, I know very little of.

Simalacrum Exactly right mate the best way to learn is self exploration and playing around with them and making mistakes if you have any questions that you need answered about anything let me know i started out just like you

+Martin Kuliza +STR33TSofJUST1C3 so as the two of you seem to be into all that stuff and you just offered me to ask some questions here i am. 1. PCIe x16 and x8 didn't realy get what the difference is, by now i only read about PCI Express x16 (3.0 Ivy Bridge or something) slots that are used to put my graphics card in. What i know other PCI slots are used for w-lan cards etc. 2. i know RAMs have clock rate (is it called that in english?) but i don't know how to figure out what max. clock rate for RAM the motherboard supports (can i find it without having to google it seperately every time?) 3. just for clarification dual channel means that i have to run 2 of the same RAMs in that channel and the channels are for example on a board with 4x DIMM slots slot 1 and 3 -> channel 1 slot 2 and 4 -> 2 (usually colored different :D -> yes i am a complete newbie) 4. to proof i am completly stupid why do some call it main- the others motherboard is it the same :P? Thank you for taking time to read through this and answering my questions. Sry for my bad english btw. i don't know much about this either expecially how to use these thing -> " ,,,,,,,," .

+William “Billden55” Burgoon Thanks. For instance, what is a front side bus? What is a CMOS? What is SATA? What is M.2 and can it eliminate the storage in a computer? What is a PCI express 3.0 ports and what are they used for? What is a BIOS reset and why is that important? What are the round gold things for on the I/O shield? This looks like a very premium motherboard and more than exceeds my needs. What model of this board has all of its features but backs off on having so many of them? Like give me only two or three of each item so it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Check his early stuff, or like Makemeajmod said, Google, doesn't hurt to learn more. I always jot down bits n pieces stuff i dont know then either youtube it or google to get a better understanding. This video has overcomplicated things to the extreme as I've become used to when I search up technical stuff on components, I know this is really late, but if anybody happens to find this comment: Buying compatible computer components is not as difficult as you think, all that you need to do is look up your motherboard and match up the different numbers to each other, so in regards to CPU as this was the main focus on this video when you look up a motherboard that states it is compatible with LGA1151 on it that means that you can only use CPU's that have the LGA1151 number on, you can't slot in LGA1150 or any other variant unless it says so, so if you had a motherboard with LGA1151 and LGA1150 support that means CPU's with these little ID letters and numbers will work on that motherboard. I hope that makes sense, as the video was made in 2014 I'll do a little RAM explanation for clarity as this threw me off as well, when searching for a motherboard and you want to put some RAM in check the type the motherboard supports, there are three types of RAM I know of for desktop computers now and there only used to be two people used, DDR2 and DDR3 but now we've got DDR4 and there are motherboards that only support DDR4 so you will not be able to put DDR2 RAM for example in a motherboard that can only cope with DDR4. This is exact but all you need to do is check the id numbers and types off and you'll be absolutely fine, if you're not sure, then you'll be better off letting somebody more experienced do it, I hope this helps, I don't think the guy actually explained the basics at all and simply started listing off parts as if everybody would understand what he was on about.

@Surkimus
@Surkimus 8 жыл бұрын
From what I understand, LGA1150 (for example) refers to the socket thingy, while chipset is whole another deal. Like, how am I supposed to know if Z170, Z97, H81 or H97 etc. is compatible with the CPU I'm thinking of buying. Does it even matter in the end? From a quick research, it does, but not necessarily every time... it's so goddamn confusing to me.

I wish you had shown an actual spec of a motherboard and the critical parameters you need to match with the CPU and memory. As well, onboard video is important to distinguish when selecting the right motherboard. People might buy a motherboard incorrectly with integrated video chips or a CPU with integrated video when they want to build a gaming machine with dedicated PCI video card. Cheers

I don't know much about computers, but here we go. When picking a cpu you'll have to check if it's compatible with your mobo (motherboard.) " How? " you may ask.. find a mobo you want. Look for a tag, mine is lga 1151, now look for a cpu with a lga 1151 tag in it. This means they are compatible. Your ram, if you check your mobo it will say Ram: (A Bunch of numbers ending with MHz) then DDR1, 2, 3; 4. Mhz means it's speed, and DDR x means it type. If your mobo supports DDR4 2666Mhz and that only, you'll have to find that certain speed and type. (Always have 2x4, 2x8, 2x16 etc because having two sticks of ram makes it more powerful, This is called dual channel. I don't know that much more, but I'll tell you this. A motherboard can say Micro, Mini etc ATX. This means you need a micro etc case.

that's impossible to determine accurately i mean, it's a good board and a good cpu but seriously it could be 3 years it could be 10 years, it could 1 month if you're really really happy to get a dud it's electronics mate you pick the best one that suits your needs and you roughly gauge how long IT SHOULD LAST my opinion would be, you should get 3 years out of it, safely but again, there is no definitive way to judge because, beyond the electrical circuit design of the board and the cpu there is - Where will you use it - How will you use it - How likely is it that accidents will happen and so on it's almost impossible to predict accurately

Phuzion Gaming youre an idiot. For AM3+ sockets, the fx processors are absolute pigs and REQUIRE high power phase and nice vrm's, even for some stock clock processors (name the 8 cores). For example, an m5a97 LE r2.0 claims to have "overclocking capability", but is in fact a piece of absolute shit, and stock clocked 8 core fx chips will toast that mother board (I fried two of them and sent them back for refunds until I figured out "hey, maybe I shouldn't get a piece of shit motherboard"). They have all these "claims" but have 4 phase power and shitty VRM's. clearly you haven't bought many computer parts, nor have much experience in the AMD or K series world if you think a motherboard saying "OC" on the box is enough.

Eli Ghz/Mhz lukemaa nostetaan isommaksi.

I beg to differ with you on which is the most important component to start with when building a computer. A CPU should be the second choice, and the motherboard should be first. The motherboard, with respect to video output, is the way that the user interacts with the computer, specifically the I/O. If you know how you're going to interact with your computer, as in how many peripherals and accessories, network needs, USB Type-C accessories, eSATA drives, audio speakers, m.2 slots, etc., then that's a guide for the I/O features you want. Further specificity of features can be made deeper in a search. But choosing interaction features first will still present people with the platforms to choose from, like Z170, X99, etc.

i really dont understand what he means when he says "2 ram slots per channel", it sounds confusing
@pRopaaNS
@pRopaaNS 6 жыл бұрын
It's literally what it means, each RAM channed have 2 slots for RAM sticks. The difference is that if you have one fillled and one empty slot in same channel means that the channel won't run at full efficiency, resulting in worse RAM performance. So you're better off buying 2 smaller ram sticks to fill a channel than buying a single big one. The channels are color coded, the same color stands for same channel.

No, but cheaper motherboards tend to overheat and overclock badly as they have worse heat sinks, and these small thingies called VRMs around the CPU can overheat, causing crashes.
@NotSoCrazyNinja

To make everything even more confusing, if you go with used motherboards, you're likely to run into issues with "proprietary" setups. I screwed up with my recent project and got a used motherboard that uses a "proprietary front panel setup" that makes it difficult to power it on without the original front panel. As well, some models of the motherboard I ordered have non-standard power connectors so you have to use the "proprietary" power supply or repin the power connector. I haven't received that motherboard yet so I don't 100% know if it's one of those I have to repin the power supply connector (hopefully not). However, the specs on the board are really nice for the price. Everything should be arriving today (except the CPU which should be arriving tomorrow), so I will know soon enough if I'm going to have to be annoyed.

@robechstenkamper4149 8 жыл бұрын
do you know what size your case can fit? extended atx, atx, micro atx, mini itx? what price range were you looking for? do you prefer any brand? basically the i5 6500 has an lga 1551 connector. so any lga 1151 board will work. also, any video card within the past five years is going to be universally compatible with any similarly aged motherboard. one thing to look out for is ram though. if you've already bought some whether it's ddr3 or ddr4 you will need to match your motherboard with that. www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&IsNodeId=1&N=100007627%20600567584%204017%204026%204027%20600009016%20600009017

That's an LGA-1151 socketed CPU. If you use PCParticker, or any of the major retailer's websites (Newegg, etc), there will be filters for selecting components to ensure compatibility. A single GTX 960 means you could use an ATX (standard size), Micro-ATX (same width, shorter height, and no more than 5 expansion slots), or Mini-ITX (smallest common motherboard size, only one expansion slot and usually only 2 memory slots). The size of the case then comes into play.

HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT YOU TOUCHED IT TO THAT NICE WARM WOOLY JACKET OF YOURS that I'm sure is just chock full of ESD. now.. ok, ok, if you're not going to use the board, fair enough, it doesn't matter, but the point is YOUR PROJECTING TO A BEGINNER THAT IT'S OK TO HOLD THEIR BOARD LIKE THIS WHEN THEY TAKE IT OUT OF THE BOX and.. Please, do not reply by saying it is ok I hope you have more sense than that and that you were merely holding the board the way you were for display purposes SO. LET ME NOW CLARIFY TO ALL THE BEGINNERS ARE FEW THINGS YOU FAILED TO DO BEGINNERS GUIDE TO WHAT JAY JUST SAID(NOTE - I ORIGINALLY TRIED POSTING 1 POST, BUT.. IT WAS TOO LONG TO POST, so I broke it up into the subjects you guys had trouble with )enjoy......

Some things that have changed since 2014 and are like the new things to look for when buying a nextgen motherboard: New U.2 ports Newer revision USB 3.1 ports DDR4 Type-C USB connectors (just for cable convenience) The disappearance of legacy I/O: SATA2, M.2 to a degree (seems better suited to embedded applications now), SATA3 to a degree (there are still slower devices out there), USB2.0, PS/2 ports. This is my personal opinion.

Great video 👍🏼 This is the kind of video budding PC builders (and old hacks 😅) need to understand the basics. Too often, tech channels focus on videos that go way over some people’s ability to comprehend as they deal with it constantly and assume everyone is “up to speed” with all the new products. Other great video prima topics would be how SATA port allocation is affected by M.2 use, how PCIe slot lane allocation is affected by populating all those slots, etc. Keep em coming Jayz 👍🏼

I have decided I am going to go with an Intel i7-8700k (unless you recommend AMD/AMD Motherboard as a better option?). My questions: 1. Do you have any recommendations for motherboards < $200 that would be perfect for what I am trying to accomplish, preferably an ITX? *Reason I am going with the Intel is because from my research it sounds like it performs better with programs like Photoshop and Illustrator. Do I have it wrong?

STR33TSofJUST1C3 made a lot of sense, I am one of the ones that only understood half of what you were laying down. I am new to some of these terms so if you could simplify it a little more for some of us dum dums, I for one would really appreciate it. Seriously though thanks for the information , looking forward to seeing more .

Just try to find the "best" Z170. Ofc when I say best I mean the one that will suit your needs the most. There are a lot of useful features you can look for if you do your research. Personally I prefer ASUS for motherboards but everyone is different!

Should you use both Ethernet cables at the same time from one router. Dose it make a better. Or do you run each cable to a different router

Hello Jay my name is Andrew. I know you are a busy guy I feel bad for bothering. I had a question, I'm shrinking my machine from my Maximus Formula VI to an ITX build. Problem is, I can't find ANY Z97 ITX boards in stock online ANYWHERE, I checked dozens of stores I mean dozens, and can't find anything and so I thought I'd ask, do you or any of your tech friends have anything for sale possibly? I don't know if this is the appropriate platform to ask that but it is my only means of communication to you. if you have the time I'd appreciate a response. Otherwise thank you and I'll continue to support your endeavors as I have. Thanks man.- Drew

I love my new mb picked up a asus x99 pro 3.1 didn't need the deluxe but its nice to have bluetooth and wifi on the board just in case. And the main reason i went with it is it looks great in a white case and its on of the best looking mb in my opinion. I put a 5820k and 16gb 3000mhz corsair ddr4, i have 2 780 classifieds but I'm gonna upgrade to a 1080 when in comes out cant wait so glad i held off on the 980ti.
