There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

I was a teen in the 80s, and I remember thinking C. Everett Koop was pretty ok. At least one person from my childhood hasn't turned out to be an embarrassment. Side note, he made me think of a Quaker neighbor on Little House on the Prairie.

Got to say, I think the comment about excommunicating sociopaths from society was poorly-considered. It relies on a common assumption about sociopaths/psychopaths (that they're all evil/destructive), and ignores the many people with the condition who try very hard to integrate and are open to feedback about when they've said or done something outside acceptable boundaries. Basically, there isn't a single population of people who you will find irredeemable to a person, and we shouldn't let ourselves be tempted by easy but incorrect solutions that involve damning them wholeheartedly.

So uh... that suggestion about an Containment Zone for Sociopaths... I think Robert was taking it as a joke, but I dunno about the guest, he seemed pretty sincere. It's a terrible idea to have concentration camps in general, but also very specifically for Sociopaths, because they are infamously good at faking empathy to manipulate people, whereas others, say Autistic people, are typically very empathetic, but struggle with conveying that. The false positive and false negative rate for this terrible idea would both be astronomical.

I don't know if i want to learn more about Koop. Hearing what he did is quite moving. The idea that he could manage potential conflicts in his fundamental beliefs and still act like a doctor and have some basic human decency is hard for me to process. What a display of doing the right thing. He seems like the exact opposite of Reagan. Koop got the poop to the American people 🎉

he also really does have a fantastic beard. This doesn't impact his capacity as a doctor or a human in any way, but still, gotta appreciate a good beard.

Honestly, a story where Wolverine fights, and loses, to AIDS, would be really cool and fitting for the X-Men. Just another reason Disney and friends suck for denying us such interesting stories (not that i know exactly when Wolverine would be available) by eviscerating the public domain (while profiting off it). Along with someone making a kickass Batman vs Cthulhu, and just all the cool things that could be done with Superman if he didn't have to be part of an infinite continuity, or a trans Wonder Woman explicitly to make TERFs apoplectic.

Closest you'll get is in the X-Men comics, the Legacy Virus was an attempt, if a bit poorly conceived, metaphor for the AIDS Crisis

Andy sounds a lot like Pr1vateLime. Great episode as always. Also I encountered the use of the F slur frequently in middle and high school, and I grew up in Minnesota. I believe our culture started shifting around the time we graduated high school, because gay seemed to be the joke everywhere at the time.

gotta say i didn't love the conversation wrt empathy - i think even as a bit, the discussion of testing people for low empathy and segregating them from society is really kinda worrying/tasteless, especially as like. empathy doesn't always equal compassion? i have low empathy sometimes bc of my autism, but it doesn't make me lack compassion. just because i'll sometimes need a friend to clarify what they're feeling in the moment or why they feel that way doesn't make me not want to help others or incapble of seeing other people as human beings. i understand what he /means/, and also that it's a joke, but it did make me click out of this ep.

Just checking the comments to see if anyone else was a bit taken aback by it. I'm guessing he meant reactive empathy (the ability to feel someone else's emotions) rather than cognitive empathy (the ability to know someone's else's emotions) but even so that was a questionable joke

Yeah, very much didn't appreciate that part. Experiencing little to no empathy does not tell you anything about how somebody acts, and as always, people who have a mental disorder or are neurodivergent are more likely to be victims of crimes than perpetrators

Its disturbing to me that Andy Beckerman goes on and on about hating all Republicans then says he doesn't understand how someone could hate a whole group of people. He might want to look in the mirror before getting back up on his towering steed. Then he starts on segregating people from society that don't fall into his definition of good people. Man, I hope Andy Beckerman never gets real power or Robert will have to do an episode about him.

Yeah, it's weird. The guy thinks he can judge people by their actions. You and I know that it's not okay to brand a whole group of people as "murderers" just because they've all done at least one murder, but this guy! He thinks if you kill people, it's okay to hate you!
@mwc1707

@@trioptimum9027 So if a left handed person killed someone it would be alright for someone to brand all of them as murders and evil? If a airline pilot did then we should banish all airline pilots to a remote island? No. Its not. Blanket hate of a group like how he was talking is troubling no matter what side of the political isle your on. I don't support the Republicans, I disagree with their policies. But I also don't like hate for hate's sake.

@@mwc1707 Look, if you know a "secret Republican," someone who votes a straight Democratic ticket, never pulls a lever labeled with an "(R)," never donates money to a Republican politician or PAC, but just kinda longs in their heart for a lapel pin with an elephant on it? I guess that's fine. But if you vote Republican, I judge you by your actions, same as I judge people who murder or rape.

@@mwc1707so if one Nazi does something bad based on their ideology we should not extend acceptance to the other nzis? I find this guy pretty annoying but ignoring the ideological requirements to be part of the group as equal to a person in a group randomly doing something bad is just absurd. Yet of course he can imagine that because yes, that is what he is doing and it happens to be basically correct.

The worst guest you've had, super obnoxious. His little stint at the end misses the entire point of the podcast "I'm a pragmatist so I don't really care which philosophy got them to the action, I care only about the action". Isn't the entire point of the podcast talking about what the bastards think, how they grew up, their philosophy, what made them tick? What they did was horrible but there is Wikipedia for that, this podcast is for discussing the lead up... Maybe don't bring on a "pragmatist"
