I wouldn't neccessarily say that thoughts are a choice, as those come and go, just like feelings - you cannot control your thoughts. same! I went through a really hard decade where i was severely depressed and didnt *want* to change, so nothing ever did. when things were worse than ever, i had this weird moment of clarity where I thought “I don’t want to be like this anymore. I want to be happy.” and from then I really put in an effort to try all those ‘coping mechanisms’ that I brushed off as worthless or stupid, and I really looked at myself and what I wanted to do, and then I just... started doing those things that terrified me but I knew were good for me. I still lose motivation sometimes (hence why I’m here now lol), but now that theres something I want, a future that I really want to have, I havent gotten near as low in my mental health. Good luck to you, and I hope youre doing better now!

I've had more ups and downs in my life that most people would have jumped off a building I lost several properties, over 250k Cash when I was my 40s but found a way to get back on my feet it took about 13 years of saving, saving , saving and investing of what little of I could tuck away. And I didn't know I was using the 5 second decisions back then. And you are so right 5 seconds to just out of bed in the mornings I do , make my bed I've learned at 5 years old or my Father guided us .....Thank you for the reminder Miss Robbins....very very much Oh ! I use to use something like the 5 second rule in my college days. I use to be painfully shy about talking to women, but the I would count 3...2...1. By the time i went to 1, i would say "hi". My friends thought I was some bold and confident guy. But I was trying not to be single for the rest of my love. It worked. I'm now married and have a family. So, no need to use it for that purpose. But never thought about using this rule in other aspects of my life until now. This makes sense.

I find the best thing to do is if it is something that is important to you then do it first thing in the morning. Have 4 goals first thing after waking up. For me it is drink coffee, eat breakfast, get my clothes ready to go biking, go biking. When you have 4 decisions first thing and nothing else matters right away, you will never skip the exercise. When I come home after biking and it is 7am on a weekend, I feel empowered and I got the exercise done so now...I start my day with momentum! The earlier I go, the less I hesitate and the excuses do not really show up just yet.

This thing about waiting to "feel like it" is really a true trap. It happens to me. I used to always feel like it and got everything done, but after I had a TIA stroke, I have never "felt like it" since. Some circuitry changed and I have to force myself into whatever, usually ironing! LOL! But once I get going, I just go till I'm done. Having a scheduled day with times to rest a bit and fairly frequent changes of action helps. I'm just a 'go till it's done' person, so it's easy to get bored to death and exhausted. It's better to break whatever it is I have to do into time increments and come back to it later. I have to give myself a variety of things to do in a circular schedule and then I don't get bored or exhausted. It's a better way to fight procrastination. Im going to try this 54321 trick and see if it won't help me cut thru my own excuses!

Hi!! 2 years ago I watched this video and I was like what a genius! So I started doing the 5 second routine- literally get out of bed the moment the alarm goes off (my hubby thinks I'm nuts but also is envious) and now over time I've trained myself to take 30 minute naps and use the 5 second rule to get up and over time its just become "normal". I apply your 5 second rules to many thing and always tell myself " don't talk yourself out of it!" Anyways. Just wanted to say thank you 🤍

So accurate! I totally agree! Its doing what we ALREADY KNOW is the right thing to do no matter how we feel about it. Its the small positive changes and personal choices that make the difference. Brick by brick, day by day we become what WE truly want to be. Its ALL about balance and its all for our benefit...rest, good food, consistent exercise, good influences around us, doing what we really love to do in our own way.

One thing that really stood out to me about what she said within my own methods I've created, it's true we have the answers. We're always looking for a quick fix but throughout our lives and through other storms we were collecting data. Now is the time to use the tools. I will start applying her methods along with my own and I'm excited to see results. Thank you for sharing.

I could listen to this charming and wise lady all day long... I do things, because I keep telling myself, that I have to do, but time after time excuses manages to step in. She is absolutely right and I'm glad she is sharing her experience, what a great learning curve this is! :) I can't wait to push myself more and try this 5sec rule :)

I came across Mel on Twitter and I loved what she had to say. Pleasantly surprised to come across this video. Definitely someone worth listening to. She’s absolutely right, no one is coming to save you. I’m also in the process of being assessed to see whether or not I have ADHD, the ‘5 second rule’ really helps me.

JONES if I’m reading this correctly and taking it literally, it’s very important to reach out to friends or family right now. I’ve felt down like this and the most important thing is to talk to those who love you. Please do it right now.

I don’t force myself to get out of bed. I love my morning time in bed. Some days I get up early and some days I get up later. I love having that flexibility and doing what I feel. It’s more important to me to live in the moment acknowledging and honoring how I’m feeling.

I can totally relate to that thought, but to get to that point in the future, we will have to extend effort in the here and now. One of my other favourite coaches (apart from Mel Robbins of course) called Lisa Nichols says "There's no elevator to the top, there's nothing but stairs" (in the growth mindset, we want to learn and grow and put effort towards this, in the fixed mindset, we want things to come naturally - everyone has both parts, the question is not "if" but "where"). Wishing you all the best in achieving your dreams.
