What these screws/holes for in Behringer Crave?

Tuning calibration with two little screws in Oscillator section on Behringer Crave.
I was very curious about these two little screws and couldn't find any information about them. So I explored their functionality myself and now I share the results with you.
Actually, it's quite an important setting if you care about perfect tuning.

As you've noticed the one one the left is for 1v/oct tracking (scaling)and the right is for you default knob position if you like. This is for calibration, I'm assuming they have temperature compensation as it's an analogue circuit. You would normally set the reference frequency using the knob (eg: C2, doesn't really matter) and hit C3 and use the trimmer to adjust it. Go back to your reference and adjust the knob again and repeat the process until the scaling is correct. I would go 2 octaves, dial that in and then check 3 octaves and adjust if required. Once scaling is spot on set the Freq knob to centre and adjust the right trimmer to your reference. Same calibration for any VCO, there abouts. I noticed a similar issue with the Behringer 921 VCO...

I did notice the tiny recessed screws, but just added them to the list of a thousand other things I do not yet understand about the synth. And now, apparently, there are "notes" in a "scale" which have something to do with music. Who knew?

This is one of the "joys" of a real analogue synth. It can also be really frustrating trying to get the "scaling" correct over a wide octave range...it's probably possible with a modern synth like the Crave but it was impossible on my old Pro-One. I guess that just adds to its character!

Hey man, I have some issues and would be so grateful if you will help. When I play a sequence and transpose it during playback, even if the MIDI-notes come from PC, even if i press the same key sequence starts - it transpose the sequence -2 octaves down. It works properly only with sequences in 4th octave and I don`t know why. The second problem is that when MIDI comes from PC the synth start playing, but doen`t end, when MIDI event ends. I tuned my Crave using the screw on the right and the other octaves are only 1 or 2 cents off, so I'm happy with that. But I wonder how to deal with the OSC knob. If it gets moved even slightly the tuning goes off. The only thing I could think to do is tape it down. Is there a better way to deal with this? If there was a click, or detent, so I knew the knob was centered then the problem would be solved. Any suggestions better than taping down the OSC knob would be great!

I did the same with my Little Mcv. Use it to midi control an old MS20... That small but wonderful device works with either, V/Hz and V/oct, but each one requires a proper offset tunning...

Никита, привет. Да, такое поведение ручки хотелось бы, но кажется это невозможно. Да и никто не общеал, что она октаву должна давать, просто свободная частота. Если даже диапазон Скейла можно подогнать в октаву вверх и вниз, то внутри октавы не будет строить. Там один винт это offsett, другой V/oct. Поэтому главная задача, чтобы чтобы осц нормально строил на широком диапазоне нот. У меня тоже не дает октавы вверх и вниз, шире получается

I just checked my Crave and when the Frequency knob is at 12 o'clock it is perfectly in tune (scaling and all) at A 440 Hz so I better leave it that way and not mess with it. The only inconveniece is that C key sounds like A but I can tune it with the frequency knob if I want to.

Its a common problem in analog synths. On some synths its not possible to tune the lowest vs the highest note, and therefor they should not be played with both bass and high notes at the same time, but be tuned for the used notes in the current song. You can hear the detuning problem on the Arp 2600, the Behringer Neutron and many other synths - but some of them can be tweaked somehow.

I followed the Behringer advice video on here for tuning my Model D and they ask you to tune it to an A note (A2 and A5 for each screw respectively)... Just wondering why the crave is tuned to a C note?? Thanks for posting this video!!! I got my Crave from Thomann and i think it's been out of tune since Day 1, so hopefully this sorts it!!! Now i just need to find out why my sequences are playing around 2 to 3 times faster than the clock that is coming from the RD-8... Anyone any ideas about that??

That's not midi. Midi is just information. If you press C, the midi out will just output the information that a C is played, no matter how the actual generator is tuned. Midi = ones and zeros CV = Volts per octave

Standard calibration for any analogue synth. One is tuning, the other is called 'Scale'. If you mess it up too much you can spend hours trying to fix it. My polivoks is a pain to tune!

дело не в $200. это аналоговый синт с частичным цифровым управлением. есть совсем трушные аналоговые, где вообще нет цифры, как в старые добрые, и стоить они могут дорого

dont care for perfect tuning is you buy analog (its the charm) , these holes are very common since they calibrate the midi side to the analog side , scale is the offset in the 12 note interval , mess with that and it an take long before you find it again ,been doing this routine on kenton interfces since 30 years

Bro the biggest secret of this modern society is 432hz tuning and big healing properties of frequencies in 432hz = A spectrum. Lot's of ppl now making music by tuning their vst's to 432hz = A and repitching all of the samples 8hz down. This is amazing that crave can be tuned.

If you don't know what those are then don't touch them. They are for tracking and will have been set up at the factory so you get 1v per oct. Then again if you are not bothered about your crave being able to stay in tune across all your octaves then feel free to mess 😉

@@AntonAnru теперь стало понятно. Я не знаю почему но когда пропускаю crave через zoom ms50 g сигнал становится грязным , с каким бы пресетом не использовал. Даже через ableton и плагин Valhalla supermassive и то звук чище. Есть мысли на этот счет ?

Возможно вы используете vca/line выход, он даёт сильный сигнал, больше предназначенный для еврорек формата. Если его использовать для карт, микшера, педалей и тд, вероятен перегруз. Попробуйте с выходом phones, должно быть нормально
