Well, I was going to go for a Prophet 6 desktop, but seeing as the price drop on the Deepmind 12D brings it down to $600, that's a no brainer. Sorry Sequential, going to have to wait for a while, the Deepmind 12D looks like my next piece. I like the fact that I can control all aspects of the synth with the computer. I can stash it somewhere and not have to touch it. Great review!

I subtracted all hardware from my synth setup and decided to go completely with software. The quality of soft synths now is such that the sound is indistinguishable from hardware. It is often said that soft synths lack the hands on feel you get with hardware. So I added an Expressive E Touché to my setup. This, along with macros eliminates any issues with hands on. You can do a lot with the Touché. That said, I always wanted an ARP 2600 since my teens in the 1970s. And Behringer’s 2600 proved irresistible. So I added this back in. Turns out, the 2600 was something of a gateway drug. I recall wondering way back in my youth what it would be like to have a fully polyphonic analog synth. Interesting that the Deepmind 12 provides an answer to that question. I think Behringer has done a great job with this synth. So this was another bit of hardware that I added in. And, of course, I couldn’t resist the RD-6. I think I’m really, really done with hardware. Famous last words maybe?

The unique aspect of the deepmind is it has a "set back in the distance" sound. Lots of vintage analogs sound right up in your face which is great, but the deepmind's softer distant sound is a great contrast. It truly has depth.

Thanks so much for putting together the review. I currently have the Deepmind 12 keyboard and love the sound. However I had to send it in to Behringer for a problem with one of the keys. As it was my main keyboard in the studio I'm hurting. So I'm considering getting a standalone MIDI keyboard and the Deepmind 12D to avoid this situation in the future. What I want to ask is how easy it is to rack mount? The unit looks 5U tall but I can see the cables sticking up. What do you feel would be the minimum amount of rack space for the 12D? It looks like I'd need at least 6U to allow clearance for the cables and vents. I can use right angle audio cables so that would help.

Thanks for this! I'm curious about the noise floor on your unit. Mine is pretty noisy. Even using the balanced TRS outs it still puts out a lot of hiss. Also, the balanced outputs are out of phase on my DM12d. When summed to mono the the gain drops dramatically. Reversing the phase on one channel or the other fixes it. Assuming all DM12's have a similar issue, I'm wondering if Berhinger could remedy with a firmware or software fix...thoughts?
@SeanDivine6 жыл бұрын
I'm not getting any substantial noise but there is a slight hiss. It's barely noticable unless you crank the signal. Also, I've noticed that if you leave certain patches on the effects units produce some noise / artifacts. I can't speak on the phase issues you're experiencing because that hasn't been the case for my unit.
@danwool6 жыл бұрын
Actually I just realized I must have a reversed balanced cable. Using different cables eliminated the phase issue. I just started using the synth and haven't recorded much. Maybe the noise won't be an issue. Thx!
@networkservices31216 жыл бұрын
Almost all analog synths produce a slight hiss just above the noise floor. This is a result of the input voltage is an actual part of the production of sound. This is also why analog synths can sound different from one model to the next. Everything effect that sound. But a slight hiss just above the noise floor is a very common occurrence on almost all analog synths. It is a large contributor to the rich warm sounds that analog produces as compared to the very clean and pure sound of digital. Both attributes are very important to production of high quality timber. Neither should be considered a limitation.

I plan to buy A Deepmind 12 or 12D, because I'm sure I can create very beautiful sounds with it ! But before, I've some questions : I've read the user manual, but, unfortunatly, I'haven't seen the answer. 1°/ I usually use my synths in MIDI mode, connected with my PC and Cubase. I record my playing and I built my performance (track after track). Well, Deepmind 12 has 12 voices, but, all the 12 voices have the same MIDI channel ? Or, as the Roland JD-XA, each voice (part) has its MIDI channel ? 2°/ Is there a seller on Reunion Island ? (It's a little french tropical island near Mauritius Island and Madagascar, in Indian Ocean) 3°/ Between the Deepmind 12 and the Deepmind 12D, is there a difference or they are exactly the same synth (except the keyboard, of course !!!) Because the keyboard version is more than 10 kg and it's very expansive to carry in my island...
@SeanDivine7 жыл бұрын
Hi! the Deepmind 12D is not multi-timbral (all voices are for one midi channel). there are no feature differences in the 12D and keyboard version to my knowledge.

As with all analog synths, it's worth it if you don't already have one. I would have liked a demo of its polyphony with reverb off and long R. Analog synth sounds differ the most by their filter, given no recombination/hybrid/matrix of input waveform. I would have liked an exploration of that the most; there are many good reverbs these days and synth makers shouldn't fall into the trap of "user only has this 1 synth I just sold him" but should look to this the most to provide him with creativity. Overall a great release by Behringer apart from that, everyone who doesn't have this amount of sliders and knobs in their studio should get one - again, only if the sounds complement what they can't already make. Or steal.

Got to agree with you on that one. If you got the Voyager and Prophet 12 you are good. Deep mind 12 does seem good especially for the price. After a lot of debating though I'm going for the Prophet Rev2 to go with my Sub37 and a Korg Arp Odyssey and I'll be happy

How would you compare the bass sounds to something like the Moog Phatty or 37?
@SeanDivine7 жыл бұрын
hey James, I've only used the phatty briefly but Moog basses are tough to match in terms of low end. the Deepmind does some nice bass patches but it takes a bit of extra work to get that thickness in the sub freqs (using the boost option on the filter, EQ in the effects section, etc.)
@harrymerchant89447 жыл бұрын
Heres the thing about Moog bass. They are big, difficult to fit in the mix in quite a lot of genres, and dare I say a bit overrated. I've owned a Voyager (very boring synth) and a Little Phatty, a bit of a one trick pony and I tell the truth when I say neither of those synths I could ever make work in the mix. Maybe its just me, but I dont think so. Now, the Behrinegr wont do the big fat bass the Moog does, but it will give you bass that fits in the mix across far more genres. I think to many see analog synths as just a bass machine and this really isnt the case at all. The Deep mind will probably give you what you want and a lot more. I would choose it over the Moogs you mention any day of the week. Oh one last thing, the synth I have that does excellent bass and fits in the mix like a glove is the Korg Arp Odyysey. That is one brilliant mono/duo synth

to be quite honest I have zero knowledge of synths. If I wanted to have this as my first synth, I would be in deep trouble to start a sound from scratch just by looking at the panel. Correct me if I'm wrong but to start a sound from scratch you have to press two buttons that aren't label as "New" or something like that, at the same time... and the layout doesn't seem to flow in a logical way from left to right [something like: step 1 [raw sound waves to choose from ] , step 2 [sound wave modulation/modification] step 3 [fxs]... It seems like a very powerful [and great sounding] machine... but I would be completely lost. :(

Hey David! Sound design, like mixing or producing can be intimidating at first. Once you learn the basic concepts though, most everything will translate across other synths. Personally I don't look at it so much as a step by step, linear process but moreso it's simply listening and reacting (and knowing what does what). Like many processes in music it's both technical and creative; you have to develop your own tastes, know what you're aiming for and have the knowledge for how to get there. Anyways, it's really not so bad once you start learning and this is actually a relatively easy synth to program. Have fun :)

David if you watch "once upon a synth"'s KZbin videos he shows how easy it is to make patches on the dm12 and how to get loads of different classic sounds and use all the features
@harrymerchant89447 жыл бұрын
Nah, just twiddling the knobs and you will come up with good sounds. Very easy to programme, you dont need knowledge, that will come as you work with it.

Harry, yes but I would still be lost understanding how it functions. Lucky me, since I wrote this comment I was explained how the majority of synths function [the basic idea behind its logic] by a good friend of mine who - curiously enough - is also quite anal retentive about how synths are layed out. :D

Excuse my ignorance, but can one just use a midi keyboard to control the module , would that have to be through one's DAW? what connections are available to control the synth via a midi keyboard. I will be using a Roland A 800 Pro controller to access my soft synths, how would this work with this module? Thanks
@SeanDivine6 жыл бұрын
yes, you can use a controller only - it has midi, usb and wifi connections

does it sound like moog sub 37 ?!
@nahn1113 жыл бұрын
nothing sounds like Moog, that I know of.
@HeberMN_ Жыл бұрын
@@nahn111 actually there are a lot of synths with the same sound, some may sound even better, like apparatus or the last eat behringer with the ladder filter

I love your review style. Would you review my Kontakt 5 Fairlight library in a similar style if you got it? I will also let you have my DM12 patches. :) Best Patrick

Hey man, the deep mind sounds as good as i've heard it in this video in overall sound quality. Could you tell me of any processing you might have done in this recording?
@SeanDivine6 жыл бұрын
hey Sam, no processing done on the deepmind tracks :)

what the fuck do I want wifi in my synth for...why am I paying for this...well it's quite simply because I want hands on control of a polysynth x.x
@josephwright59216 жыл бұрын
Because WiFi gives you access to 100 effects parameters that would be unrealistic to have knobs on the front panel

Thanks for the review. As an 'oldie' in this matter, I wonder why you were disappointed by the use of digital synth (racks) Like 30 years ago, I owned a professional studio were as you could find the ultimate collection of nowadays very sought after analog synths. Jup8, M12, Chroma Rhodes & Polaris, Mini's (2x) OB8, OBx, MemoryMoog, AX60&80, P5, Linn9000, DMX, 909,808,TB303, SH5 and many more... Because of several (...) reasons at that time, I sold all the analog stuff and gradualy replaced by digital synths. Only for the sake of money I regret I've sold those things long ago. It would have made me a fortune today... It is an endless discussion, but again with this D12, I do not hear sounds that are so called sound 'warmer' or 'better' then i.e. my V-Synth or JD990, Virus and many more digital synths I own now. I do not hear things with an OB6 and many more recent analog stuff that can not be done with i.e. a Jup80, Virus TI, Novation Peak and other similars. Sounds are equal, as fat and warm on condition that you know how to program those VA's ! Sometimes people ask me what I use for bass in my music productions as they say it sounds so fat and warm. You should see their faces when my answer is : the Novation V-station...in combination with Lynx DA's and Waves plugins...and fat it sounds. Thanks again for your review. The whole 'analog' matter is mythical. Believe me.

I understand what you're saying... own an older Virus Indigo and love it. Can it make sounds similar to the DM12? Absolutely. There's still something in the subtleties and imperfections of true analog thought that are hard to explain. It's a bit more unpredictable and has distinct character to it. Can it be replicated to some extent? Yes, but I admit at times it's more fun to have the real thing :)

Hmmm. Never thought much about physical synths outside of live performance. You have now found one more way to burn more holes in my wallet lol.
