This is a video of a board setup from start to finish of routing a normal band that is mobile on the road. I have explained mixbus setup with monitors, subgroups and effects send, matrix setup with x-over filters for L&R Mains and a subwoofer send.
I made this video late at night, so I might have rambled on a bit too much ;-).
If you haven't already, make sure to check out my new website dbbaudio.com for the latest news and updates!

Drew - Your tutorials have been my "Savior" when learning to mix with our X32. This edition is helpful but it would be REALLY helpful if an updated version using the current level of software upgrade were available! I realize you are likely paddling as fast as you can but perhaps an opportunity to create a 'New & Improved" version might present itself!

super helpful thanks a ton. I'm used to working on analogue boards and although ive worked an x32 before ive never had to set one up from scratch. I got called to do an event where I'd have about an hour to set up the board and do sound check while other people set up the mains and monitors and all the hardware stuff and i was really freaking out but i feel like i can do it in 15 minutes now.

Correct, you would just use Matrix 1, and not link Matrix two. Also you wouldnt need to have stereo subgroups, you could use a single bus for drums, single bus for vocals.

Hi Drew, Thanks for this tutorial which it's still helping in 2020. Can you explain a little more why you're using a stereo group in this case if the signal is the same both left and right ?

Hey Aaron. The ambient mic isn't something you are sending through the mains is it? If you have the channel muted on the board, it will not pass any audio even into the subgroups. Are you trying to record USB off of the USB drive on the top of the board for a thumb drive? Or are you trying to use the X-UF card for recording?

Drew, I used this video to setup our X32 because it was almost the same. The question I have for you is can you put an EQ on the L/R main and have it process FOH. I guess the real question would be in this setup where would you put a FOH EQ?

When using assignable buttons to mute vocal FX, a great trick is to mute the FX send instead of the return. That way your reverb or delay tails die off naturally instead of abruptly.

Hi! Thanks for a great introduction to x32. I followed every step of the case study in17 minutes, until the part where you are routing all channels to the Bus Sends. Can not find the where I click on 7-8-9-10-11-12. Assumes that this is shown on an elder version of Edit X32.

No, the ambient mic is strictly for recording to get a better board mix recording. It's also unmuted and unmuted on the sub group like it should be. I'm trying to record it through usb through a flash drive. I recorded the drums through the matrix mix like I wanted that is feeding from the sub group. So, the sub group and matrix is working fine. I just can't get the ambient mic to send through it for some reason. Would it be easier if I gave you the scene file?

Hi Drew, I love the board but since I have used nothing but analog boards for the last 45 years, I'm slowly getting my head wrapped around the awsome capabilities of this digital one! You have a very easy to understand way of relating info for this board! I have watched all of your videos and they have helped me a lot especially the "case study" for Jerry! I set up the board with X Edit but I can't seem to get it working! May I send a file to you and you can tell me where my mistakes are? Thanks

Fantastic videos! You explain things logically, and I am awaiting the arrival of our X32 in our newly remodeled church. Going through these videos has helped me understand more of what I have been missing using an old system that isn't digital. I have started to map out on the computer using x32-edit how the layout of the channels will be, but really looking forward to hands on with this board. Keep up the great work on this subject. Use God's gift you have to the fullest! I noticed on another video that when you went to setup the drum mix that you were running it from the computer instead of live drums. Can you explain that so I don't have everyone on the worship team there just to dial them up for the first initial settings? Thanks!

Question abt the subs and routing. You mentioned using Output 14 on the back of the x32 for the subs. Wouldn't it be easier to line out on the back of the QSC153 directly into the 181s rather than sending a separate feed to the mains and subs. Or does that negate using the matrix setup you describe. Thanks for the case study too, that was helpful

My question is when I'm trying to send the channels to the bus to get global eq or effects I can't just click on the busses like you are in this video around 17:46. I have sliders left side is a full bar and the right side has a split in the middle. Sorry if this is confusing thanks for all you do!

New York!? That's cool! If there is any chance that you could show me how you do that because I want to set this system up the best possible way. My last DriveRack PA2 had vocals coming out in the subs when I used the Subharmonic Synthesis(which sounded great with the band) and I couldn't find any crossover to fix it except not using that feature when our singer was singing. I then got ahold of the dbx company about the problem and that's when they brought my attention on the 360. If the way you set it up is better or simpler than using the Matrix please let me know and how. Thanks again Drew :) Larry

Hi Drew, great video. Quick question for you - when would you use the DCAs and when would you use the subgroups during a show? I appreciate the need to grab a whole number of channels to adjust a particular instrument but I don't really understand the need for DCAs and Subgroups? My understanding is that the DCA will actually move the related channel faders and the subgroup is the equivalent of a master fader for the related faders. Why not just use DCAs?

Hey Drew, awesome tutorial. We recently got the X32 console at my church and I am trying to set it up to mirror what you did on this video. I am using stereo bus to group vocals, drums and instruments and I am using Matrix 1 (out15) for MainsL, Matrix 2 (out16) for MainsR and Matrix 3 (out 14) for sub. I am getting sound out of the matrix to my mains and sub but the LR fader is not controlling my overall volume. I think I need to send my busses to the LR fader and then the LR fader goes to the Matrix but I am not sure, any help would be awesome.

Love this video! I have been setting up my system the same way for months by using this information that you provided with this case study! I too use the QSC KW153 & KW 181 Speaker system(with the x32). Now I have a small set up problem I hope you can help with. I recently purchased a Dbx DriveRack PA2 Complete Loudspeaker Management System that can be programmed with saved settings with all the different venues I perform at. I just need to know how do I set up my x32 board to accommodate the new system? The Matrix set up now won't work for the subs. Any possible way could you help with this and what would be the best board set up that would work with the DriveRack PA2? Thanks again Drew for the videos!!!
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 9 жыл бұрын
Larry Shibler Hey Larry, sorry for the delay in my reply. I would setup your board to do a stereo LR into the PA2 processor and then let the processor do the work of the crossover. With only two inputs to the PA2, you would be limited to only the stereo pair. The other option is to have the KW153's off of the PA2, and then you could do the feeding of the subs via the X32 out's, but that would complicate it a bit more.

Hey Drew, im Gary from Gateway Community Church in New Zealand. Firstly thanks so much for your tutorials and training vids. VERY HELPFUL! so I came about a small prob that I am stumped by. We have a Mac that runs our data show, music playback and then records the sermons. So last Sunday we had, as usual, we have background music coming in on the 5/6 RCA AUX ports and going back to the Mac we use the 5/6 RCA AUX out. when we played the music back, the recording levels were perfect, but as soon as I sent a mic through it, we got nothing. I even tried sending it to the Mix Bus and re-routed it to Direct out Aux 5/6. got a little levels, but totally not level to left and right. I know you can record directly to USB, but that only records Mon as far as I can see. Is there any suggestions that you might have that you can Suggest? Blessing Gary

My question is: My school let's me hard wire into their speaker system: I can only come out of my mixer with L & R; even though they have powerful sub woofers... that's the way it is.... If you line out the back of the tops into the subs you lose the independent control of just the subs for their level. Using output 14 you can control the volumes of the tops and subs separately.

This may have to do with adding compression, etc. but why do you run your vocal/instruments, etc., to a group bus and then to a DCA instead of directly to a DCA?
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 10 жыл бұрын
Great question Joel, a DCA is not an audio path, it is just a remote control to the level of the channels which are assigned to that DCA. A group bus is an audio path, so it allows summing signals together so I can then add global compression or EQ to a group of instruments like the drums. So I have my drums going to a group bus, but I have my two kick drum mics assigned to a DCA and then the rest of the drums assigned to a different DCA. This allows to easily change the volume of the kick drum.

What about sending the full band to mono sub group and an ambient mic to a mono sub group to a LR matrix mix for USB recording? I tried this technique and can't get the ambient mic to send to the sub group, but everything else will send to it. Could it be because it's a mono sub to a LR matrix? I wouldn't think that would make the difference. I tried using a LR sub group and it didn't fix anything.

Hey Anders Fryk you can route signals to the Aux Outputs by going to the Routing button, then tab over to Aux Out. You will still need to use a Bus or a Matrix to feed the Aux Output, but you will then be able to control any volume fading for that specific output with the Bus master fader or a Matrix master fader.

Why did you run your mains out of matrix 1 and 2? What is the downfall off running it out of the regular l and r?
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 10 жыл бұрын
Hey Grant Butters , great question! I run the mains out of the Matrix to allow for much more processing and control over the signal. By sending the LR to the Matrix I can then assign different matrices for different sources. Like the main output, a live feed for video, a CD recorder. Some of these need different levels and a bit of a tailored EQ, so the Matrix section is what allows for these adjustments.

Why is the hihat not miced up?
@DrewBrashler
@DrewBrashler 10 жыл бұрын
Great question! Careful placement of the overhead mic will get a lot of the hi hat. Also a good amount of bleed from the hats always goes into the snare mic. Lastly, because we are not a stereo PA system at the church, I have never worried about setting up a stereo micing setup for the drums. If you were on a stereo PA, correctly positioning the overheads will get sufficient hat, but if you need a bit more sizzle, adding the hat mic is always nice.
