I am a black female and graduated with an electrical engineering major last year at the age of 22. In my classes there were only one to two other girls max (and only two other black people and I was in the south so it isn't like the percentage of black was low). I did notice the class below me had more girls so that was good. Not having many girls in electrical engineering did suck but I still had a lot of guy friends on top of the girl that was there. I was only one of two students who graduated with summa cum laude in electrical engineering and the other was a guy. I was very proud to beat the stereotype and I never once felt looked down on because I was a girl or black (even though it definitely happens). I was acknowledged by others and even asked for help and worked as a tutor for engineering courses. Do not let your gender, background, or race define who you are. I strongly believe with hard work or dedication that you can do anything (trust me I am not that smart lol). I just worked very hard and kept my head on straight. I now work my dream job as an ASIC Hardware Engineer for space systems. Don't let anything stop you. If I can do it, so can you! Sorry for the long message, I am just passionate about people knowing that they can achieve whatever they put their mind to. (Remember I was an engineering major not an English one lol)

Oh, I am really interested into going into electrical engineering!!! The school I want to go to has classes with like 55 boys and 5 girls. But That just encourages me to be one of the girls, break the stereotype! I am just afraid that it will be to hard for me... I really need to work for the grades I get now in school.

Hey! I'm going into electrical engineering in September and this is my biggest worry. I'm already use to it in my physics class being one of the three girls in the 20 person class but uni is going to be much larger. I love the fact that I can be one of the people who go against the stereotype, and I'm super passionate about engineering. I hope I can follow your lead and continue the female rep!

thestrawberryblast ... the reason why you don't see so many girls in engineering is because inherently most girls don't like that sort of thing. It's not that males don't want females working with them...in fact it's the total opposite!! But the fact remains that boys like "stuff" and girls like "people" ....in the most part!!! WHY....... The same reason why most girls melt at the sight of a baby and most boys shy away because they don't feel that bond!!! What is happening right now is that people are thinking that boys and girls are equal...and they are!!!!! But they are very very very different!!! I don't even know why I have to explain this because to me it's common sense.

I have one year before getting my degree in Civil Engineering ( environmental emphasis), and I can definitely say that over 80% of my classes have been predominantly male. However, I’ve found that I’ve only experienced sexism from professors rather than classmates. It’s really frustrating but it just motivates me to prove them wrong.
@m22pozos

If you’re experiencing sexism by a professor, I would report them if it’s outright and obvious. Any kind of discrimination against a person, sexism, racism, etc. should be brought to the attention of the school. You deserve to sit in that class and learn just as much as anyone else. It’s ridiculous we still have to worry about this in 2019, almost 2020 at this point

I caaannntt even begin to count the amount of WOMEN who’ve discouraged me from doing Engineering, saying they ended up doing something completely different or just stayed at home after marriage. And don’t even get me started on the men all of whom have an opinion on what I should and shouldn’t be doing with MY life. And I have to admit at one point I was seriously considering switching majors thankfully my dad pushed me not to and here I am with 2 years to go graduating with a civil engineering degree. If you want to do engineering, and it’s something you feel passionate about don’t listen to anyone do what you want!

Marcene M heyyy umm I’d say honestly just do your best, read your material day by day don’t let it pile up because its a lot to comprehend a day before your exam lol trust me been there, not good. Also I’m definitely not a genius I don’t comprehend things on the fly like some students do, I have to sit and work to understand, solve lots and lots of questions just to get it. So if you’re like that than don’t worry about it all you have to do is practice and you’ll see that’s it actually not that bad. Anyways good luck and I hope you do great!

Yesss! The worst is when you tell someone a career you are interested in and they say “oh...that’s really hard to get into.”😒😒 Even when parents pressure their kids to get into a career their kids aren’t even interested in, it sucks! Parents need to learn to let their kids do what makes them happy!!

That is so sad! Here in Norway it’s much different, the gender ratio is pretty much 50/50 for students in STEM fields. Hopefully it will be more accepted as time goes on.

A.S Bernard thts the thing tho its the same here in the middle east. There are more females than males in all my engineering courses so that isnt the issue but somehow women don’t end up pursuing it as a full time career so they simply discourage others from going thru the trouble of getting the degree in the first place.

I have the same reasons as you for picking industrial engineering. Like I also want to be an entrepreneur and be in business. Idk what type of business yet, but I want to mix engineering, fashion, and art (I'm really into art). You are such a role model! I'm a senior electrical engineering student and most of my classes are like 5 girls out of 60 for small classes or 15 out of 100 sometimes for larger classes lol. And yeah It is so true the field of engineering in general is hard. But I do want to broaden my field into business a bit. I'm currently selling items on poshmark and now I'm starting my KZbin channel. I also have three younger siblings and living with a single dad I pretty much help with pick up and drop off to school, cleaning, cooking, doctors appts, etc. So yeah it can be quite hard but there is always something you can do. Maybe you pull out an all nighter but then you can sleep later. Prioritize your time wisely. I feel like it's all about balance. I'm just starting on the buying/selling side so I'm no pro just giving my in take based off of my experience. All I know is that there's always someone there to help and something better you can do everyday. To all my girls out there, I may not be the smartest girl you'll ever meet and yet I'm still in the field. Haven't failed any classes yet. I dont have a great GPA but I'm still graduating next semester. So hey! Don't sell yourself short! If I can do it, trust me, you can too!

Giiiiiiirl! I'm a Mechanical Engineer and I was only 1 out of 4 women in a class full of males. Being a woman in a male-dominated field wasn't and isn't intimidating, but you're right about the not having anyone to mentor you. That was and still is the hard part, so not seeing many woman engineers gets disheartening. I think the worst part of it all--outside of the studying and having to manage your time well-- is when guys assume that I don't know much or they won't listen to my input or they treat me differently then they do each other. But, if I can do it and you can as well, then there is NOTHING that should stop any girls and women from becoming engineers! And congratulations on graduating and landing the dream job. :)

I'm a mechanical and plastic engineer and it makes me so happy seeing other girls go into the field and recommend other to do so. It is so refreshing see other push younger generations into the STEM fields. Being in mechanical I am usually the only girl or one of two and I have never had the issue of male classmates being rude. BUT, I have had the issue of male professors talking down to me and acting like I know nothing. Being a girl in a male dominated major can have its downfalls but honestly you just have to have a thick skin and prove them wrong. It took two years for my one professor to finally acknowledge that I am actually intelligent and not to talk down to me. Plastic engineering on the other hand I did have about 15% girls in my classes so it was a lot better with professors treating everyone fairly.

Well done Natalie ! We need more girls like you to inspire other women into engineering. I'm 44 years old now ... much past my study days, but I have experienced what many of the ladies say hereunder. In a class of around 71 people, there were only 4 ladies ... and that included myself. But slowly, you come to realize that understanding what you're doing and hard work pays off. Engineering is about thinking hard on problems ... something females can do just as much as males. To all the ladies out there studying for their degree ... take heart and keep going. It's tough, but if you are determined, you will succeed.

I found your channel through your collab with Tasha! I love this video, and I'm glad you ended up finding a great job! I was a physics major and often was either the only girl in my physics classes or one of a few.

Hey I'm starting university in a few months and I've been a little hesitant with choosing computing classes that I want to take because I'm a little worried about how I would be treated by the guys. I'm currently on the e-sports team and the only girl in my region to compete. I'm also super girly and enjoy fashion. I get comments especially from the younger guys about competing and I'm a little worried that kind of stuff will be carried on into the classes I want to take in university. This video is helping me see that even though it will be hard sometimes to push through and explore the things I want to do. Thank you 💕

Thank you for sharing this Natalie! With hard work and determination, girls can certainly pursue engineering with ease. I also believe that if the right kind of learning environment is provided early on, girls will be much more confident in opting for STEM careers.

Good point there about the breakdown of women in stem, a lot of women who go through and make it all the way to college without being turned from STEM still end up in areas that are STEM based but more in biology, teacher or healthcare research and not physics or engineering. I personally was pushed into teaching science when i said liked maths and physics. I wasn't even told what engineering was. I respect those women who go into bio, teaching, or med but I think it is important that we stop the stereotype that when a girl says she is interested in science its not just bio.

Maybe this is just at my school, but I've noticed that with Biomed there seems to be less of a gender imbalance. I could be wrong, but I think a large portion of women who go into engineering choose Biomed. I started out Biomed, but it wasn't for me, so I switched to Mechanical. Don't let anyone discourage you. Women engineers got this!

It’s so refreshing having you be so open about your experiences. I’m a girl studying engineering and I completely agree with everything you said in this video. Thank you for filming it. Did you ever struggle with discrimination from your friends and peers in engineering, many of mine have suggested “special treatment” for women in engineering and almost made me feel undeserving of my achievements because I am a girl, they say things such as “oh yeah but you just got that scholarship because you are a girl, I had no hope of getting it because I’m a guy”. How would you deal with this kind of attitude from your friends? Thanks again for the amazing video! Xx

Ayee! I am doing Mechanical, Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and we have like less than 10 girls out of 90 students. Gender statistics DO NOT define your choice of degree! I learnt interesting things in my degree and no way am I stopping it either. And Natalie I definitely would wanna be role model too especially in countries like South East Asia where it's still a HUGE stereotype! Any advice on influencing or rather try to broaden people's perspective?

About two months ago my grandfather told me (when asked what I should go into) something in engineering or politics would be good for me. And since then I’ve been putting myself down for not being smart enough or ahead enough to go into engineering. Despite having a 4.0/straight A’s and a good understanding in all of my STEM classes I had doubted myself. This video has made me realize that I wouldn’t be happy or feel like myself in any other major. And even if I’m not ahead, I have the drive to get there and the desire to learn whatever I have to. Thank you so much for inspiring me to be myself.

I’m going to be a sophomore majoring in Construction Engineering, being a girl shouldn’t be that big of deal but holy cow it is! The worst part of it to me is having to justify why I want to go into the field more than my male counterparts. Anyways thanks for being a great role model to women in stem. #steminist

I really like your videos, you are so inspirational ❤ you are so right to do videos like this one to show people that we can be successful in engineering too ! I'm studying engineering in France and I learned that I am accepted at the engineering school of my dreams yesterday. I do not regret chosing this major but I must admit that I would have regreted listening to some people 3 years ago telling me I should chose a more "future-mom-and wife-appropriate" job and major. So I'd like to tell all girls out there to go for it, if you want it, you can do it, no matter what people are thinking 👊
