Single and super happy to be single, i'm a student and just figuring a lot out in my life right now. Getting someone else involved in any aspect of life just feels too much right now, so not looking and trying to figure things out for myself.

Recently found out the guy I broke up with earlier in the year because he treated me like trash, was cheating throughout the whole relationship. I was trying to fill the sadness about it with dating people, but I realised I have to process what happened and move on with my life first before I date people again. So I'm single right now and actually feeling good about it.

I thought my most recent relationship was PERFECT and I absolutely idolised by partner but was very reliant on them, emotionally mainly but also in a financial sense and we became each others carers through periods of ill health. I've never loved anyone so deeply but it still wasn't the right relationship for me. Loving someone more than you loved anyone else doesn't mean that they are the right person for you to be with. After 10 months or so of being single and learning to rely on myself again and trust that I can look after myself again, I'm now falling for a wonderful person and realising that I can love someone gently and calmly and not idolise them but care for them deeply. To anyone feeling that they'll never find the person for them, I promise you, it gets better and there is someone out there for everyone.

I am VERY newly single (like, my ex moved out of our apartment today) after 3 years together. Having a hard time coping, and definitely not ready for another relationship for a while. But I really believe being single for a good amount of years is really excellent for developing independence (I was completely single for the first 20 years of my life), so I'm looking forward to developing that side of me again when I am ready

I am single as of today. I’ve been in two relationships over the past 5 years and haven’t given myself a chance to really love/focus on myself. I loved my most recent boyfriend so dearly and we are both trying to focus on ourselves/make ourselves better. Hopefully one day we can come back together. Very heartbroken at the moment but it’ll be okay ❤️

I just got out of a 4 year relationship (which I thought was going to be THE ONE). I also just turned 30. Part of me feels like time is running out and I need to focus on finding a life partner but another part of me wants to live it up like a single person. I’ve never truly lived the type of single life you two described and I’d love to try it but a) it takes me forever to move on from relationships and feel “ready” to date or see new people and b) I don’t know any other single people!
@Franklyfrankie

Having gone through that a year ago, I feel like (in my experiences anyway) you kinda just have to go with flow and see where it takes you. I say just be open to meeting new people whatever the result. One of the great joys of being single is the excitement of new people.

I really felt compelled to respond to this. When I was 28 I found myself newly single, when my ex left me 2 months before our wedding day. He was five years younger, and we had been together three years. My twenties had been a flurry of hard times between serious relationships and fun single times. I was convinced I had to have children before I turned 30 and my life felt upside down. But then I remembered that I always get over people- why not get over him now instead of waiting? And I did. I ended up falling deeply in love with myself, and my now husband at the same time. My husband proposed to me on my thirtieth birthday. On my thirty first we started trying for a baby. I’ll be having our daughter in January- three months before my thirty second birthday. I guess what I’m saying is that as women time feels SO HARD sometimes. But it’s worth it to wait if you can have it with the right person. And things can actually move fairly quickly once the right person comes into your life. I say fall in love with yourself. Deeply. That’s when you will find the right man (or woman) to fall in love with. 🖤

I'm 25 and have been single for 4 years now after a long term relationship. It helped me a lot, I got to know myself, sorted a lot of things out. I know what I want from a partner and what kind of partner I don't want to be. I also feel very busy and got way too comfortable just with myself. I'm not good with Tinder and things like that so I give up easily since I'm very introverted. I also want to move to another country so it seems kind of pointless to start a relationship at this point... But then I see you, Mel, with Thomas and it almost brings me to tears. You warm my heart and just seeing you two together makes me so happy (and a little bit jealous as well lol). I really hope my story has a happy ending.

AHHHH I’M SO EXCITED TO WATCH ANOTHER COLLAB FROM YOU TWO!! Your convos are always so full of wisdom and I LOVE the topics you guys discuss. I’ve been single my whole life. When I was a younger teen, I hated being single because I was a hopeless romantic who just wanted to experience all the romance a relationship can offer. Also, when most of your peers are in a relationship, its kinda hard not to get jealous seeing how happy they were in a relationship. After a few flings though, I realized how I’m unready I was for a relationship with how my insecurities just intensified whenever I was talking to someone. I also realized how I viewed relationships as an escape for loneliness which isn’t really the best reason to get into a relationship. I’m currently 19, still single and having fun exploring who I am. There are times I would want a partner just because I am the type of person who likes cuddling and just loves showing appreciation to others. Those times quickly fade away, though, because I realized that I had friends who I can cuddle and love all the same.

I am in a fresh new shiny relationship so it’s all amazing and dandy for now but I came out of a tough relationship last year and realized how freeing it was being alone and I went into this relationship with such a different mindset and it’s just as free and chill. Just as you said your so isn’t your therapist, expectations can ruin a lot. And trust is KEY, both trusting them and them acting trustworthy. Here’s some things I have learned just in general as I grew an from past relationships : -you aren’t half a person when you’re single and you don’t “need to find your other half to complete you”.You’re a full person outside of another person and you’re complete all on your own -you can’t expect another person (in whatever type of relationship you have with them) to fulfill everything you need and be everything you need and visa versus,it’s simply not possible but that’s okay..one person isn’t gonna do that (an shouldn’t) and it’s not healthy to put all the pressure on one person (including yourself) It’s difficult to untangle the mess we’re taught that just isn’t correct and ultimately is harmful but it’s not impossible to do...also really good video ! I really liked the discussions 🧡 (btw I’m from Hannah’s channel ! Love her)

I was in a 3 year unhealthy relationship starting at 17 and then quickly got into my current 4 year healthy relationship. I do sort of feel like I missed out on relying upon myself while being single, but at the same time, I've had to grow in that area ins my relationship. If I could plan my life, it would be ideal to include some time in between my relationships, but that just isn't how it worked out. I am happy to be where I am and love being in a relationship where we push ourselves and each other to grow.

Been in a relationship with my girlfriend since I was 17 I'm 23 now (my very first relationship btw). My relationship did change recently, as I "came out" as polyamorous. We talked about it for a looooong time, and decided to go for it. So I also have a boyfriend (very new , like 2 months...also the girlfriend and the boyfriend aren't together, they are friends however). I'm the happiest I've ever been, I've always been happy with my girlfriend...But there was this part of me that couldn't fully come out until recently. Now I get to be myself and share all of my love with both my partners. So yeah, I'm pretty happyyyy.

I'm six months into the most serious relationship I've ever had... but I recently moved for work and we are now long distance as well. It is very very different than my single/dating life, that's for sure! Being long distance pushes me to spend more time with friends and family, which is actually nice. And our communication feels quite natural, with a variety of phone, video calls, texting, snapchatting, etc. The hardest thing about the distance is that the deepest, most difficult conversations tend not to come up until we are visiting each other. We are trying to get better at this, though!

As a person who is ace/aro/generally not interested in dating, I love that you brought up having needs that aren't satisfied by a romantic partner. I love my friends and family and to me they are the relationships I value most, they are the ones who discuss books and movies, who I share good and bad news with, who support me when I need. I do also go on "dates" with myself (always great company, always get to do what I want, but sadly never get to split the bill :P) and for coffee dates with my mum or dinner dates with friends. I love being single, to the point that if someone pretty damn perfect was like lets be in a relationship, I would definitely decline.

I feel exactly the same way. Glad to know there are more people out there like this. I've been in relationships, but I get bored and always end up wishing I was single. I wonder if it's because I was born into an amazing family, had great friends in school and now in university and all that. I am very much a people person on the scene, like at work or uni, but at the end of the day I just truly love being alone with a book, music, or just being quiet and at peace. I am not sure if I could ever trade that for any amount of affection, money, or security. I have always written in my journal to see if I'll change my mind. Confirmed at 18, 25, and soon at 30. Have you always felt this way?

@@Cosmicpassports when I was younger I was constantly in relationships, like from about 15 to 20 I would have been single for a matter of months. After the last relationship I decided to make a point of being single for long enough to learn who I was by myself. That was 5 years ago, and I still love my own company. I do love spending time with friends and family but if I go more than a day or two without at least a few hours alone I get grumpy. I do sometimes wonder if the change has to do with my anti depressants, because I started taking medication for depression at 20 as well, and I know that can mess with libido, but also I don't mind the compromise.

This video was sooo relatable! I'm in a happy relationship for almost 2 years now but sometimes I miss being single because I did 100% what I wanted to do and didn't do things because of someone else. Pros about being in a stable and happy relationship are: no doubts about the other person, always having someone to tell good and bad news to, always having someone to go somewhere without having to go alone and always having someone to have your back and give you cuddles when you need it the most :) 💚 Edit: I found what you said about compromising and never finding someone who is perfect in every way for you very interesting and relieving because I sometimes feel insecure about my relationship because my boyfriend doesn't 100% share the same interests as me and I always felt when I saw relationships online like you and Thomas' that the two of you do have every single thing in common.

I’m slightly older and very single. I’m also gray A and very rarely attracted to anyone in real life. When I AM attracted to someone I immediately end up in a long term monogamous relationship because it’s so rare for me to be attracted to anyone, I’ve never experienced being attracted to more than one person at a time. But also that’s just how I’m happiest. I’m happiest with a partner, a friend, a travel buddy and someone to come back to at the end of the day. Regular sex when I finally find someone I want to have sex with. However because of my situation I’ve spent the majority of my life single and not dating. My life has never been about dating, my friendships have never been built on conversations about dating (at least not about me dating) I’m 100% independent because I formed that way by circumstances so my boyfriends usually joke about their “independent” girlfriend who never even thinks of asking for/ accepting help in any way. I would happily stay with one person for life if I could find the right person, but when you’re only attracted to one or two people a decade the odds of one of them being someone you want to build your life with is slim. Which can be sad sometimes since that’s truly what I want, but I also have learned to roll with the punches and accept my nature for what is. Appreciate what I’ve had and make the most of it, and my future 🤷‍♀️

the feedback thing is sooooo important for me !!!!! i am in a very long term relationship (6years and engaged). it is so important for me to talk about the problems right now and don't pile them up until I can't take it anymore and snap. we have a dedicated expression for this with my hubby : "decoller les timbres" it litterally means taking off the stamps. it's like each problem is like a stamp and if you take them off one by one it's easier than taking off many. i don't really know if it makes sense in english :')

I'm in a long term relationship and really enjoy it. I haven't actually spent much time single (1.5 years between the two relationships I've been in) so can't really compare and contrast too much. My partner and I "meta-communicate" a lot and it has definitely helped our relationship evolve. We also got together in an interesting time, at the start of university and the beginning of my transition, so not only has our relationship evolved with time but we've evolved quite drastically together while in the relationship. We're quite settled and I enjoy the domestic kind of life together. As we've been dating longer, I've also become a lot more independent which I like because when you go through a big change with someone, you end up relying upon them a lot in ways that aren't necessarily the best. Really enjoyed this chat with you two and look forward to more!

I said this on another video, but you two and Leena all started talking about being in relationships right around the time my now-fiancé and I were starting to flirt 😂 And these talks are just as relatable now as they were then! Especially the points about meta-communication and compromise -- both things I'm trying to get better at, because this is my first actually healthy relationship. I think the hardest things thus far have been my navigating therapy and our navigating our combined finances, but at the end of the day, the love and the desire to build our lives together is there and not going anywhere fast, and that's made what I call my "baseline" that much higher and more stable. Really, genuinely, he is the best thing that has ever happened to me. And hey, I didn't like saying "fiancé(e)" either, for a good four or five months after we got engaged 😂😂 Now we just use girlfriend/boyfriend, fiancé(e), and husband/wife interchangeably -- which is confusing for people who haven't seen us in a while, because they think we got married without letting them know 😂

I feel very good in this situation right now, but who knows, we are both 21 so everything can happen!! We can evolve and change and I never feel tied down by him. Still learning to feel valid as a bi girl in a het relationship!! Kisses!!

i just got out of my first relationship of 11 months (we almost made it to a year lol) a week ago and at first it was incredibly hard but i'm slowly accepting it and realising it is for the better. our needs and communication methods did not match at all, even though we loved spending time together. i learned soooo much about myself in this first ever relationship (i'm 22) and i really feel like i am much more confident than before. i'm not that excited to be single tho, being in a relationship made so much sense for me and i'm dreading having to get to know someone all over again. however, i do feel like i would like some more experience with dating now that i know myself better! that was the rant byeee

That has 100% hit the nail on the head - you go into your first relationship expecting someone to provide EVERYTHING when they are only human. The realisation that it is okay to go elsewhere when you need a little chat is life changing.

I'm recently single! As in the relationship ended 2 days ago.... It was an amazing relationship while it lasted and he was such a great person, and he helped me become a more confident person compared to who I was before. We only really broke up because I want to go travel and explore the world (leaving for Australia for a year this month!!), while he wants to get a career going and settle- we were just heading separate ways. Ending the relationship was what was best. I don't regret anything and he was the best relationship I've had.

I find it really interesting because in my culture, when we meet people romantically, it's very planned and you can meet their parents right from the off too and it's very much that interview style. A lot of me loves it because although it doesn't always feel organic, it does mean you learn a lot and talk about a lot of the important things straight off the bat.

I got out of a 2.5 year long relationship at the start of the year and have now been with my new partner for a few months. I’ve finally figured out what it feels like to love completely and be loved. Finally getting to experience what it’s like to be with the right person has been the most amazing feeling, and I have no doubt it will be one I feel for the rest of my life. And I’m lucky enough to know my partner feels the same way.

Loved this, especially the comments about your partner not being able to provide all your needs. I'm dating this great guy but the main thing I see as lacking is that he's not super intellectual and I do crave those convos. But he has many other great qualities I admire. So I can't expect him to be everything to me and should seek out those needs from other people in my life :)

I am a very picky person and I also have some trust issues so, hoping that I’ll meet someone one day! 😁 Thank you Mel and Hannah for this video! Much love to you! ❤️✨

I am newly single after a 3-year relationship and I can definitely relate to a lot of things you said. I am still so terribly scared of being alone for a long time especially because I was the one being left and I have been dealing with the rejection and abandonment that followed. But I know this is what I need and I will look back at this time of my life and feel so happy it happened.

(Bisexual lady here.) Ever since I was young and started having non-serious/serious relationships (literally 11 y/o onwards...), I've not been single for more than six months to a year at a time. I'm 21 now, and I've been with my current partner (a guy) for almost five years. I love him to bits - we've grown together, learned SO much, share so much in common, go on so many adventures, there's respect, kindness, care etc. We've also been in a long distance relationship for ~2 1/2 years now (apart for a month at a time due to study and travel). The distance has meant we've had space for growing our trust, independence, and creating our own friendship groups/having solo experiences. However - though I am totally committed, I am a naturally flirtatious person. When I was younger and single I'd love flirting, the feeling of having a crush, the freedom of being single and FREE to feel however I feel. Despite being in a loving, long-term, dedicated relationship, there's a part of me that misses the complete and total freedom of flirting with whoever I liked, the possibilities of getting together with whoever I liked etc. I've also found that as a bisexual lady, I miss flirting with girls, crushing on girls as I've found it to feel very different to crushing on guys, and I'm a bisexual lady who prefers women most of the time. It admittedly make me feel guilty to say it, but it's the truth. It's not a break up-worthy feeling, but it's very much there. Thanks for the amazing video Melanie and Hannah, big love ❤️

I've been in a relationship for about three months now, and honestly I couldn't be happier. We've already had a conversation about some pretty important topics because we're going to be long distance (ugh university) but because of this I feel like I'm in a secure, mature relationship as an adult, not just two young adults. He also gets along with my friends really well which is a GOD SEND. Slightly nervous though because I'm gonna be meeting his friends for the first time this weekend. WISH ME LUCK!!!

Have been in a relationship for almost a year now. It’s been my first one and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. During this time I learned a lot of things about myself and about how to find balance generally in life. I did go through the “nobody is ever gonna love me” period before it, wining about how this person and that person does not like me back, even if I would not have been happy with them. I am so glad I got to experience this with this particular person, with who I feel safe and like I can really be myself.

I’m currently single after parting from a 5 year relationship and I’m finding it harder than I thought! I craved the freedom of single life and not having anyone to answer too. I’ve downloaded dating apps and gone on a lot of dates, all to try fill a void of loneliness I’ve had for an emotional and physical connection with someone. But it got tiring and now I’m just trying to be happy on my own and date myself for a while! It’s not easy by any means but I’m trying 🙂 Thanks for this video, it’s lovely to hear other people’s experiences.

Such a good video! I spent a long time dating after my previous relationship broke down and it was so draining on me emotionally that I gave up for a while- I then got tinder back as a kind of semi-joke and met the love of my life 😂 It is always when you aren’t desperately seeking that it all falls into place! I also really love the meta-communication theory and I practise that with my partner all the time ☺️ would definitely recommend! It makes everything better in the relationship and we extremely rarely (in fact almost never) have arguments, just discussions about how we might change things here and there :)

It was really interesting hearing your perspectives! Nice video! I'm married and I love it. I'm big on the "everyday shared intimacy" thing, so in that regard I feel so happy. But it is not so different from when we just lived together (year and a half before marriage), very little has changed. My "least" favorite thing is that now it can a be a bit more of a hassle to carve out "alone/me time" outside of the house, inbetween juggling work, studies, family, friends, etc. Oh, and yes! Metacomunication is the best! I'm a Psychologist, and truthfuly most conflicts can be helped by metacomunicating.

I’m recently single and it was seriously a shock to the system cause we spent 24/7 together (we’re students) and I started setting my alarm later because I honestly didn’t know how to fill my time. Fortunately I’ve started spending my time wisely by painting, learning guitar and doing some photography. I feel so happy and liberated for the first time in a long time and I’m enjoying getting to know myself again. I’m soooo excited to find someone special in the future but I’m content in allowing that to happen in its own time.
