I feel like so many of us can relate to Mercy's Story . Depression and anxiety is so real, it's sad that black families don't take it serious, most families go to an extent of claiming it's all pretence and deem it as weakness...The difference between some is the fact that some people tend to handle it so well compared to others and some even come out quickly compared to the rest. Am in South Africa, did my high school in Kenya then moved to South Africa to join my family ....And joining varsity in a foreign land was a work out let alone finding a job. Being foreign is one thing and being a foreign competing for the same position with the locals was a hard nut

I spent the whole day listening to young educated minds say that depression is just something people bring upon themselves and for the rich. It broke my heart and pissed me off so bad. I mean leaving in Kenya I have seen so many young people go through it including myself. I don't know what to do when it comes to such people🥺

I totally relate to Mercy's story. I too have gone through that when I graduated with my first tier degree of architecture. I was expected to support myself yet I was to still be in school to complete my second tier of architecture. It has not been easy being the student who is 25 with a degree. I decided to go into freelancing to help me get by. To make ends meet. Mercy was lucky that she wasn't alone when going through post-graduate depression...she had her parents supporting her. That was a blessing. Many of us find ourselves alone, depressed and very broke. We cry ourselves to sleep to forget about the pending bills and the hunger. Depression is a silent killer. We should speak out more about it. We need to save one another from depression.

University studies are trully underrated and it becomes more worse when you know you have a talent you can shine upon but no one can sponsor you with any materials to start with or even a capital , thats where depression hits hard

There are folks tarmacking 5 years after graduating but somehow they are still hanging in there hoping for better days. Have a degree, I should have stopped earlier, went to try start doing something I wanted. Currently really depressed. Thanks for sharing this though. I can totally relate to her story. completed my 1st degree knowing that this is not the right programme for me but the pressure of finishing and being the 1st graduate a home kept me there. Fast forward did a post graduate with the hope that I will eventually get employed or stand a better chance, still no employment. Just like Mercy some days I would just wake up angry at everyone, stayed in my room all day, didn't go out or visit friends and family. Fast forward I got a temporary job although its not where I want to be but I'm learning as much as I can and exploring this path.

I wanted to study law or a business related course but found myself in IT. In highschool I was one of the smartest in class but now in campus I am struggling academically. I get it when you say your esteem was ruined because mine was too but after listening to you I feel different, you've reminded me that am still smart it's just that I can't be smart in everything and in this case I'm not smart in IT.

Super relatable! this is the life of most graduates. I think what got me out of this was me willing to take up any position and doing it so well that there is a difference between yourself and a non- graduate. But I would advice anyone today that if the course your parents take you to do in Uni doesn't impress you, try talk to them and get yourself out...fast! Unless it is a parent who is completely not understanding or their financial position doesn't allow, 80% of the time they will listen to you coz they know it is a choice that will help you eventually. I always thank my mum and dad for having listened to me when I said I wanted to change my course- and they had paid the whole fee. so also parents sometimes need to be cool like that.

Mercy's story is really engaging. Honestly, I never imagined I wasn't alone. Since I graduated last year from a University in Karen. Nearly every experience I have had is relatable to Mercy's. Depression and anxiety are real more especially if you are a firstborn, you have papers and all the crucial, but still, your progress is a matter of an inch.

Surviving through this system:( it doesn't work well for young learned people. Especially people who don't have the luxury to go back home during this period. It's scary the rate graduates in kenya do online writing for a living.

I struggled finding work after graduating from college. Na majuu people think you can get a job easily. It was so hard. I felt her 😢 I was judged. Even after climbing out of the struggle people still said “ona huyu, watu wale walikuwa nyuma yake wamempita! Kata nyithindo yombe!” Woooh! It used to hurt my heart. 😢 I can relate to her losing weight and hair falling out. Today I am so happy and have made awesome strides. Stay alive and wait for the good parts to come🙏🏾

Yep. I totally relate, but i find regrets to be an amplification of stress and also leading to depression; there's something I've learnt about reanalyzing and reorganizing from where you are. Instead of hating your decision several years back, you start from where you are and now you know better, plus no education is a waste, more of like no course is inferior.
