Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, a country in southeastern Europe. The imposing Belgrade fortress, at the confluence of the Danube and the Sava, constitutes its most emblematic monument. It testifies to the strategic importance of the city for the Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Serbian and Austrian empires, and now houses several museums as well as the vast Kalemegdan Park.
