@@esloudan The difference, though, is that this one is made out of official hardware, like past portables he had built. (That said, if someone could get past that password and extract the emulator, it could probably be used on a pi, since it's just Linux.)

If you are allowed and can, I would also love to see the accessibility projects/prototypes, is great to see how you solve particular challenges and refine your workflow.

It's intended to be a digital joystick, that's what the arcades had and that's what the games were programmed for.

@Lassi Kinnunen Hell, a single surface mount 5 way tactile switch from Sparkfun is only $2 and the Neo Geo Pocket/Pocket Color used a 4 way tactile switch instead of a D-Pad in the late 90s. The additional cost would've been low enough that they probably wouldn't have needed to up the cost or if they wanted to maintain the same per unit profit margin maybe bump the price $5-$10. I have no idea why anyone would defend SNK's decision here.

@@sams6090 That's exactly what those games were designed for. If you ever play an actual Neo Geo MVS cabinet you'll find the stick uses tactile switches. That's why if you buy say, a Sanwa kit, the stick has tactile switches and not an analog stick.

I retro fitted my Grandfather's DREMEL table jig saw with a modern electrical ground plug because the electrical cable was shedding old plastic when I used it. I used your soldering techniques to do it! The thing is from the 50's from my research!

Fantastic job you did, looks wonderful. Loved watching you remake it! Oh, in Japan, the full size MVS cabs did actually look like the mini you had with the blue top. There is a "History of SNK" video on KZbin that shows them both in an arcade and being loaded onto a truck. The red & white design came a bit later.

Ben! So good to see you again. Of course I would love to see more of what you do still. I know you've probably heard this several times over now and I apologize for saying it, you have inspired me. I was always rather bad at trying to keep up with all this electronic stuff and jargon I learned years ago but it never stuck. I can say now you alone jumpstarted my passion for all this retro tech and electronic tinkering again. Not just that but you gave me the idea to think outside the box and make something better from what your given, like this Neo Geo mini unit. I have watched all of your mini redesigns multiple times over and I think not only did I learn more about electronics than I did before but it stuck with me what each part was. I have this idea to dump the flash by removing it and then using a chip dumper to get the data and a Linux system to jail into the filesystem and figure it out. The cheapest chip programmer I could find that supports the flash used is like $400...Sadly my old Genius programmer is showing signs of age... 😆

Nice work. Please get a better 3D printer though :-) The only down side on this (but easy to correct) is the micro switches used only have a 30,000 press cycle life, so they could burn out in as little as 10 hours of constant play more aggressive players.

I feel like this is still perfect size for a DMG Gameboy, might have to play around with that myself. Definitely please keep doing retro console break downs/portables/hacks. It's very encouraging to me as I look for fun new ways to breath life into old consoles. I also really love how much they pulled off with some of these consoles back in the day.
