Jason Gallagher here. We took the word 'narrative' out of the title because we see a few comments saying we're implying it's a made up issue. We promise that's not the case. His shooting struggles and the lack of shooting were very real. We just wanted to have a discussion about the shooting itself, the dialogue around it (from fans and media) and how that impacted him. Idk it seems to me that Ben's mindset is that the right play is to find an open man (who is a better shooter) than to shoot it himself. He says so himself, he _can_ shoot it if his team really believes that it's the correct play, but in his mind why would he shoot a 25% shot when he can drive in post up, or find the open man? He doesn't care about his stats (if he did he could easily average a triple double). That seems to be his mindset anyway. My thoughts on this is that Ben is correct to assume that his low percentage shot is most likely not the best play in most situations. BUT, by refusing to shoot (whether it be for a good reason or not) he is limiting his own development as a player by not building up that in-game confidence in his shot. Therefore, he will not improve as a player if he doesn't try new things, even if it means taking a few objectively bad shots. Giannis is a great example of a player who could have been content with simply running, dunking, and passing, but he decided to bring his game to the next level by adding a decent shot from outside the dunkers spot, even if it meant taking bad shots in his early shot development.

a lot of great players in history couldn’t shoot jumpers or free throws, the problem is the fact that you don’t ever take any jumpers and seem to not want to attack defenders because you don’t wanna get fouled. the fact that you don’t shoot hurts the half court offense for your team in the playoffs, makes it hard to have you as a primary ball handler because the other team is just gonna sag off you and load up on another player. giannis airballing free throws and 3s sometimes is way more respectable than straight up being afraid of shooting them. every player has weaknesses
@fakedan65682 жыл бұрын
Plus teh fact that Giannis' hard work and tenacity payed off in the playoffs when he needed it most. Giannis is not a good freethrow shooter by any stretch of the imagination, but he never gave up or got scared. He is consistently in the top 5 FTA every year, because he doesnt let his weakness dictate his game. He is still a paint beast that will get a bucket one way or another, and it got rewarded in the playoffs when he went mfing 17/19 from the line in the closeout game. You wont be getting anything close to that from someone who cant even take a wide open jumper

@@fakedan6568 Well said. I like Ben Simmons and hope the best for him, but when the rubber meets the road he's gotta have a day of reckoning for the sake of any franchise(s) he plays with in his future. Tonight, the Nets just dropped to 1-4 After losing to the Mavericks 125-129. KD and Kyrie combined to about *66 points* ; two players scored over HALF the team's points yet they still lost. I'm not saying Ben is their only problem (he's definitely not lol), but his lack of tenacity when it comes to shooting not only hurts himself but his team as well. The moment that day of reckoning comes--assuming it ever does--and Ben decides to work on his shooting, the entire league would be on high alert
@fakedan65682 жыл бұрын
@@triv4555 this has only been a recent opinion, but as of right now, if categorise Giannis as the far better passer than Ben, despite Ben being more categorised as a ball handling guard than Giannis. Ben likes to compare himself to Giannis just because they have a (notice the use of the article, cause it's literally just one) single common deficiency (to a varying degree), but never mentions how Giannis has way more upside on both his strengths and his weaknesses, and doesn't allow his weaknesses to dictate his game. Even now, the only thing I'd say Ben is better than Giannis at is perimeter defense, and not by a large margin. Everything else, Giannis either stomps or is comfortably better at. I do think Ben will come back and be a respectable player, but it will be too late for him to gain the respect of any causal fan without becoming a pseudo-supertstar, and I can't exactly blame them (especially after that JJ interview where he was deflecting left right and centre)

What's wild to me about Ben is I know the NBA has shooting coaches and during his years in the league it sounds like he never got with these coaches. Better yet JJ if you love this man so much why not get with him about his jumper and help him develop a mid range

@@YungPhilosopher I agree with you on the Kobe part but I’m not low iq. I just don’t think Ben wants to be good at shooting and that’s okay. He does have a solid inside game so I would try to emphasize that if I was him.

MJ wasn't an elite free throw shooter. He was definitely good at 83.5%, perhaps evn very good. But I wouldn't call him an exceptional FT shooter. That said, if his weakest aspect is his 83%FT shooting, you're pretty incredible.

Legend has it this Man hasn’t shot a 3 to this day
@NikhilAutar2 жыл бұрын
"Your 3 point creation for other players for 3s was the highest in the league for 3 years." But a few years ago is when teams REALLY started leaving players who can't shoot completely open if they were off ball (creating a 4 on 5 basically) - or if they had the ball, guarded them with a centre who would clog the paint (essentially, still, a 4 on 5). You can't run pnr or beat a centre with athleticism because they just stand at the ring and wait, while you limit your shooters because there are more defenders in the paint now permanently, leaving more players to guard the 3. That's when his offence got terrible. All he could do was sit in the dunker spot. He played best at centre. But embiid was always there with him which made him completely redundant. But Ben is legit the best perimeter defender this century. Easily. If he managed to get a floater game, or just play centre on offence vs small guards, similar to jokic... he could be a great piece. If he's interested in basketball that is. Remember when he said that "I don't wanna ball. I see myself more as a socialite/ fashion icon?" Maybe he just wants to scam contracts and be a personality. This is just PR for him, potentially.

@anthonyrivers12182 жыл бұрын
I don't like that Ben says he wants to win and basically will do what needs to be done ...so when he's on the perimeter and the opposing team literally backs up 20 ft and leaves him open he still doesn't shoot wouldn't that help the team and help you win ??

@@lahdopa Exactly..and I want to like ben Simmons cause he's a really good player but he really needs to take the advice he's given. This is where if I was JJ I would push back. There’s a difference between not being good at shooting the ball and not shooting the ball. People keep allowing him to get away with saying he’s not good at it versus he just doesn’t shoot a ball. Great player, great defensive player but you can’t defend yourself against people who want you to shoot more with “but I guard the best player on the other team. We’ve been watching basketball for 35 years, sir. You have to give a better answer than that! Wish you the best, look forward to seeing you and your amazing talent on the floor again this year!

Stop babying him, JJ. Give him the hard questions and don't explain it for him. Why does he play like he doesn't want to shoot? Does he think he works hard enough to improve his shooting? Is he really scared to shoot? Does he love the game enough to improve this weakness?

He's gotta have Giannis's mentality towards three point shooting, 3-5 a game, if you airball a few don't let it phase you. He's 6'10 and doesn't have Joel down low anymore, he should be getting to the bucket a ton this year with that team.
@robertblount99852 жыл бұрын
Ben Simmons puts a ton of pressure on a defense but his lack of shooting puts a complexity into his decision making that shouldn’t be there. It makes for arkward situations on the court basketball wise that should flow smoothly but end up hurting his team.

It's wild how much Ben refuses to improve. Every other star player from his draft class has improved their shooting from their rookie years, but Ben hasn't made any leap or even a bump of improvement. This interview destroys all of JJ's credibility. Ben's credibility went out the window in that Atlanta series. It's not nitpicking to talk about Ben's lack of shooting. We have never seen a perimeter player with Ben's aversion to shooting the basketball in the NBA. Ben says he'll get better, he has only gotten worse. What's happened to him in Brooklyn is just sad. He's back to faking ailments so that he can continue to collect checks without actually playing. Jalen Rose was right. He's stealing money, ski mask and gloves.
