As someone who makes their own knives, i got inspiration from the 87's blade and made my own neck knife with the same blade type. I absolutely fell in love with it, just not enough for $600 to drop.

Why does Benchmade discontinue knives people want? Model 42 and the 51 Morpho in particular.

Exactly!

Should know your knives before you start talking about them. Didnt know if the lucha was aluminum or steel and the BM's are magnetic latches not spring...stopped watching

The latch on the 85/87 is magnetic not spring. Heard that come up a few times :)

When comparing the BM 87 and 85, I’ll take the model 87 all day long. The 87 is an EDC and can also be used for food preparation. The blood groove makes it a food collection point, and a place for pocket crud. The 87 has a traditional Asian style fighting knife blade. I think the BM 85 probably appeals to those who are comfortable with the status quo balisongs.

Neither of the Benchmades are "status quo" because they're channel construction.

I have two 87's and a Lucha I like the Lucha more. Hope they make new models in higher end steel like they do with the Link. Also looking forward to the new Boker Bali USA made D2 Steel Two handles 80 bucks. Have you reviewed the Shrade Bali?

The Benchmades are channel construction and the Kershaw is sandwich. That's all I need to know.

I got the 87 and recently picked up the 85 at the new msrp before it was discontinued, paid $750 😅

I love my 87. It's really good at cutting, well, everything. People just don't like the blade shape because it's "ugly." That is to say it's not what people are used to. That is to say it's not what the 42 used. The wharncliffe is the best utility blade shape for work environments. That's why razer blades use the shape.

Benchmades are nice I would love one but they are just very pricey. Kershaw is a lot of knife for the money but I wish the kershaw came with a pocket clip. I would edc the kershaw!

It’s amusing to hear “knife” gang trying to speak intelligently about this style of knife, when they have no clue as to what makes a balisong flip well. They are obsessing too much on features they are familiar with, blade grind and construction/materials. Yes, very important, but this gang needs to do more fact finding about flipping , balance, and design related to flipping performance. No mentions of fanning, rollovers, ladder, capabilities…..they are missing addressing the elephant in the room! These knife aficionados have a serious knowledge gap, and yet they flippantly spew. Please do more research, and be more respectful
