I ended up buying these yesterday, I got the 53mm ones. They're super grippy wheels and they really do help A LOT when locking into grinds. I did a fs crook like 3rd try when normally it takes me like 7-10 So if you're thinking about getting these you should do it

I'm convinced they are impossible to flatspot. I'm living on top of a hill and I ride these (to be precise: i have the "Conical Full" shape) to work every day, so I need a few powerslides every morning just to get down the street, which is rough asphalt. I've been riding these for a few months now and haven't got one single flatspot yet. None. No coning either. I've had other wheels that flatspot within one session in a smooth skatepark! Small correction: The "Conical Full" shape has a wider riding area than the lock-ins (I own both types, love them almost equally :). I don't know about the regular "conical".

I think the wheels squeaking might be less noticeable if you skate them for a bit on rougher ledges, the weird coating wears off on the part that touches. I skated the 101a and i loved how smooth everything felt compared to other formulas.

Hah. Ben, this is absolutely spot on in every capacity. I ride spitfire classics, and tried a pair of these out on street and ramp awhile ago. Every single point you make was the exact same conclusion I came to, on both ramp and street. The place I really noticed the difference on transition/coping was on stuff like pivot to tails, pivot to fakie, etc...you had to really "push" a bit more to get the lock-ins (or conicals for the matter) to disengage from the lip. I didn't like it. Likewise with something like a 5-0 to tail/tailslide on street. The classics just seem to work better, at least for me. And I'm loving the No Rain videos!

Heya Chris. Thought that name and face looked familiar from somewhere else on the interwebz (I'm Jasonn from the ODSC group FB page). Good breakdown on the Spitfire Lock-ins. I've been riding these since January and agree with both your points and Ben's about them. They've got a lot of features I really like, but I've noticed the same issue with having to 'shove' them a bit extra to get loose on lip tricks. First noticed this re-learning BS 50-50s to tail on a quarter, I was having to really wind up and twist to get my rear backside wheel to pop back over the coping. Similar issue getting FS Laybacks to come back to tail. No problem getting into and through the grind right until the rear frontside wheel would try to catch on the coping. Seems like the Lock-ins give in some ways, kinda take away in others. That said, I've been happy with them in about every other way. 6 months of rolling pretty hard on these (mostly skating street, just a little transition) and they're holding up remarkably well. I don't have much tech game so I can't really comment on that, but I've been punishing these things with powerslides and grinds for months and they amazingly still haven't coned out with no flat spots to be found. Overall I love these wheels - except for this 1 'hang up' issue, but may end up going back to some SF Classics again after these myself. Good analysis on the Lock-ins, take care man.

I ride radial slims as it has a balance shaped of square and round, and also thin contact patch. I personally like the sharp lipped shape and it's response to locking in on coping. Rounded classics was a little tricky to lock on coping. Definitely all about the personal preference.

Will be upgrading my very mediocre set up soon to an 8.38 deck with 149 Indy’s and was thinking of this wheel in the 55mm. Suitable do you think in your wisdom? P.s. i dont know if you have ridden conical or conical fulls but based on the lock ins what could you say about the shape and how the opposite side of the lock ins compares to the classic

The classic is totally different than either side of the lock-in. The lock-in was just too bulky for me and I'm sure a conical full would be too. I was't struggling to lock in on classics so I actually found the lock-ins too aggressive.

hey! can't you maybe make a tutorial on how to nollie up onto something or/and maybe how to nollie up a london gap? I don't know if it is me not having confidence in doing this or if I just do them wrong (especially the london gap one) *I can't really find a tutorial on that* ;-)

I will see what I can do. It really comes down to going twice as fast popping twice as high and holding it for twice as long as a switch ollie. They just take a lot of speed, force and confidence.

heya, thank you for answering :) I'll keep that in mind and I guess I should be prepared for some hang ups at high speed :D

Actually, for nollies up a euro gap or a ledge the trick is to land in nose manual and hold it for a second until the back wheels clear. You should only need to do this if you can't get the clearance to fully nollie onto something.

hey, I didn't think of that. great idea, thanks! :) funny thing is, maybe the third time I stepped on a board after my pause, I rolled up a deck-high ledge and just nollied up and switch ollied it first try but couldn't do it again :D I really think it is the lack of confidence, since I usually just shoot up the obstacle without my board following me.

I personally think lock-ins works great, that's the only kind of wheels I ride now

i skated the lock ins for a while and then they got small so i decided to try to try some stfs even though i honestly should’ve got some more lock ins because after a while i realized i like the feel on formula fours a lot more than stfs. i just regret buying stfs lol

I've become a spitfire fan too. They feel less plasticy.

I like the spitfire F4 classics. I have only tried the 51mm. Before that I rode bones V3 shape a lot.
