Great video. I find that putting clear silicon sealant along the seams on plastic grid that holds the black foam filter, yields the best result for me. When it's time to wash the black foam filter, I can usually peel off the silicon sealant in 2 or 3 long strands. When it's time to reapply the silicon, I find that I have to wait a day for the silicon to fully cure. After each use, I tend to vacuum the entire filter cartridge then stick an extending Stiffer duster inside the filter compartment. With this method, I'm finding the lint inside the unit is almost nonexistent. Also, out of habit from my previous Maytag Maxima washer, I tend to remove the detergent tray, filter cartridge, and leave the unit door cracked open to prevent mold.

As I do 3D design, I am tempted to design a whole new filter system. One that fits better to stop lint moving around the filter unit, and also has a tighter seal around the actual filters to stop the issue as shown here.

Hi Ben. Thank you so much for the teardown videos. I just fixed my GE all in one for the second time in one year. This time i bought the tiny spring tool for the door seal, since it seems like I'll be tearing it down again in the near future. I believe the blue coil lint buildup issue can be fixed by a garden hose, and a garden sprinkler essentially. The upper box with heat exchanger is sealed, and nothing but the blower motor thermistor is inside. Any water sprayed at the coils will only run back into the wash basin. You will need to check pump filter after every load for a few loads until it runs clear.

Miele has this all figured out and has for almost a decade. There are THREE lint filters on the residential models. Two traditional ones. The first catches 95% of the large lint, the second, directly below it catches the remaining 4.9% of fine lint. Then there is a two part sponge type filter directly in front of the evaporator coils to catch any super fine dust. I have 8500 hours on my T1 dryer and the coils are still clean. It is a great dryer and will have paid almost the entire cost of the appliance once it reaches 10k hours in energy savings vs an electric resistance dryer.
@ttheisent11 ай бұрын
The left side of the lint filter is also an issue. After 7 months of use I discovered a thick "lint cake" collected at the top of the duct that feeds warm moist air to the filter. This lint cake was about a half inch thick on mine until I managed to remove it with a flexible grabber tool and got about three handfuls out of there which was likely restricting air flow. Another thing that can happen is lint that falls into the filter track being continuously pushed back against the back wall until it prevents the filter from being fully inserted. This can prevent the micro switch that detects the fully inserted filter from being depressed causing the machine to bulk about fully fully inserting the filter. I think for the average user all of these lint issues will eventually lead to significantly reduce drying after a full year of continuous use unless this is conscientiously addressed on an ongoing basis.
@RATysonАй бұрын
I have this same issue. The left side is a nightmare of lint/hair/etc. And the buildup in the rear end of the screen track was blocking proper insertion. GE really should have provided a means to access this area for regular cleaning. I don't know how Ben's is so clean on that side?

We do a lot of laundry and we haven't noticed any increase in time yet, though.I think the hair is completely bypassing the filter. I don't think the little rubber gasket around the side of the lint filter gets a very good seal and it allows air to get around.

I believe that the majority of the lint is passing through the top, bottom, and rear sides of the filter, not through those gaps in the plastic that youve sealed. The area you sealed comes after the 1st stage mesh filter, so there wouldnt be any large strands coming through there and it wouldnt be the source of the large lint buildups. 5:01 shows that lint is still coming through at the bottom after your solution. I dont think its a minor amount. When you insert the filter into the machine but dont push it all the way in, you would be able to jiggle the filter up and down. This indicates that there are air gaps along the top and bottom slots. My solution is to use foam window seals that have sticker backing. I stick ~1/4 inch thick foam along the filter ridges, and that fixed the problem for me. I'll make a video of this soon.

That's good to hear. I suppose LG could use spray nozzles to wash down the fins - after all, water in- and outlets are given. In Europe, they use the condensate in their dryers to flush the front of the condenser. Bosch dryers will also wash the front of the evaporator.

I have been modifying what products I have used to work on the filter. I am almost done. If you send me an email address, I could send photos, I don’t have any KZbin videos and I’m not on any social media platforms. I wanted to be simple and clean as possible. It basically includes specific weatherproof, stripping in specific locations as well as an upgraded filter pad instead of the black cheap crappy one they supply. My testing has also confirmed that the replacement internal filter pad does not block CFM and will catch down .15 microns of dust / lint. My secondary filter should last well over 3 to 6 months, and you can just replace it or take it out and vacuum It. treat it like a car air filter. Also, you will still need to get an inexpensive vacuum with a long tube to collect any bulk lint that is accumulated on the left side of the track rails. I am also testing a back gasket on the rear of the filter so when you push it straight in it will block that rectangle indent and seal off the whole rear, so nothing gets by that way also. So far, I have had excellent results. My job on two units that I own is once a week regardless of what the machine tells me is to pull the filter out vacuum it vacuum the rails slide it back in good to go.

I too have the problem. We do two to three loads a day. Definitely getting buildup of lint on the coils. Cleaning it, it almost looks like dirt. GE tech support suggested I get a plastic cleaning brush that they carry for maintenance. I've ordered it, but it is but a patch for a manufacturing defect. The replacement foam filter is cheap, and available but the scaffolding is on back order until march. I'm thinking people are trying to glue the foam filter to the scaffolding. It's flimsy and if buildup occurs it would definitely flex and open a gap that lets the lint thru. That was what I'm going to try. I think the buildup gets so massive that the foam filter just bends and lets the lint thru.
@shift2electric510 ай бұрын
You are right that there is a lint sealing problem, but the problem is not inside the assy. Lint screen already prevents lint getting through that cap so that is not the issue. The problem is that the assy itself doesn't seal well to the outer perimeter. So what needs to be done is to add extra seals around the filter assy so there is no air leakage around the whole filter assy. This is a bit tricky thing to do because the caps are not big and you still need to be able to remove and reinstall the whole assy to clean the lint filter, but it can be done. I did that to my machine and it fixed the problem. GE needs to redesign the addy and make sure that the new filter assy seals fully to the machine to prevent this from happening.

I feel that the filter tracks are the problem. This is where the filter rides into the machine and sits. You restricted the air being pulled through the imperfections in the filter. If they put a gasket on the left side of the filter it would eliminate the ability for air to go around the filter through the small gaps. These small gaps will retain lint and when you slide out the filter the lint will loosen to fall into the coil.

Old LG dryer pulled over 6000W continuous. new GE unit pulled a max of 1100w, but never continous more like 600w to 800w. Do the math depending on your electric KWh costs...this saves a lot of money espeically if your in the 25c/kwh and do a lot of loads. Hello. Have had this for 3 days. I put a small load in last night on quick wash setting. When I woke up my phone notified me that it had been running on combination load for 80 minutes? What does that mean ? Washed several loads before on same setting and it never said this ?
@HomeGuySolutions11 ай бұрын
I threw out the packaging. I had purchased several and tried all different sorts of devices to vacuum inside. When I send the video, I will also send photos of the brushes. I believe it was a kit I purchased at Home Depot. It had one long skinny brush, and one fat one around 3 inches Round and 4 inches long. The bristles were just right and not too stiff. In order to use that larger brush, you do not push back-and-forth on the fins. You rotate the brush slowly to get in between the fence and at the same time keep a vacuum attachment just sucking the lint out. You can actually just hold it under the brush And spin the brush slowly or, just spin the brush to loosen everything up and then vacuum straight in and straight out without touching any of the. That is all you will need. Anyone who regrets this purchase, I would say once you know how to clean it until a new filter has been designed, it’s a great machine. It looks like GE is way superior over LG, just the fact that the size of their condenser is only a quarter of the size of what GE uses, shows a lot about what they whipped together. Also, looking at the video that was posted of only several washes there was more buildup on the LG then there was on the GE. I have no clue how to fix the LG problem, because I don’t own that machine yet.

The only problem I found with the filter is that liquid softener adheres to the fine filter and is very difficult to remove and will choke the air nearly completely, overheating and shutting down the unit with an error. Had to replace the filter assembly and am no longer using the liquid softener and zero problems.

We have had the GE Combo since July and have done about 240 loads. A couple of days ago the unit got stuck on load sensing with 15 minutes to go and wouldn't finish the drying process. When I manually stop the unit the clothes are dry. It appears that the sensor is not determining that the clothes are dry. Great machine but don't like having to monitor the unit to turn it off when it gets to this point in the drying cycle.

@Resist4 Жыл бұрын
Yeah it does, well it's more rubbery than hard. But he didn't address that and at some point you will want to remove the filter to do a deep water clean or even replace it with a new one. Then you have all this silicone to scrap off the filter frame. I'd rather use the electrical tape solution, but do wonder if it will leave a sticky adhesive on the frame.

@@Resist4 Thats what I was wondering too. And yeah with the high temperature, there will be some sticky residue leftover when you take the tape off for a deep clean

I had the same thought. I'd use tape but not black electrical tape due to the sticky residue it leaves behind. I'd use PEI tape, which is inexpensive high temp orange-ish tape commonly used to tape wires down to circuit boards in consumer electronics. Microcenter sells it and your electronics hobbyist friend will have some.

One thing to check is the length of drain hose you have going into the drain. I don't have the manual with me right now but I think it was something like max 7" from the drain opening. If it's too long it causes drying issues. I read it either on Reddit or say a YT video a couple of months ago before I bought my unit.

Can you simply use an compressed air can to blow off lint from the coil? Or is it hard to reach in to use this efficiently? Or could this damage the coils somehow? Also, what about using 3M High Temp ‘TESA’ tape to seal the crevices? Or will it not stick properly and easily come off? (Tesa tape usually is used to wrap electrical cords together)

Air is going to embed lint deeper into the fins. You need a vacuum.
@markellis786611 ай бұрын
I think the vacuum may also need something brush like to free the lint from the coils or you would have to get the suction right on the coils. Also, you probably cannot do this right at the end of a load cause things are still damp.
@Colortiniz11 ай бұрын
@@markellis7866 It's not that damp, though getting the bits of dust off is still a pain. Love the channel and thanks for everything you do! Question: Have you noticed any mildew smell or growth in the machine? Particularly on the first stage lint filter? I clean the filter after every cycle and check it before every cycle. I hadn’t used mine in about a week and when I checked the filter I noticed a musty mildew smell, no lint though. I’ve noticed the vent area stays wet/humid between washes and I think this is potentially an issue for the machine that can lead to mildew growth in that area. Since you’ve torn it down, curious to hear if you’ve noticed any mildew growth anywhere. Thanks!
@ttph4835 Жыл бұрын
Similar issue here. No musty smell, but there are times when the filter is pretty wet at the end of a load. I also had to call GE right when I got the unit because my lint filter had mold spots on it! That was brand new when it was delivered/installed about 2 months ago. GE has been good about getting back to me though. I've gotten emails and even a phone call to let me know that they will be replacing the whole unit .... not just the lint filter, the whole thing. I did confirm it would be a brand new one and not a refurb..That call was about a week ago so we'll see if they follow through.
