I recently discovered this myself. After 30 years of trying every expensive option around, the simplest treatment of benzoyl peroxide and plenty of moisturizer is what cleared it up for good. Yes, it can cause redness and dryness, but after some experimentation I landed on the perfect combination for my skin, which is nutrogena oil free moisture, 5% benzoyl peroxide cream for the T zone and 2.5% everywhere else. I apply that after every shower, and also before bed. Be careful about sun exposure and also with clothes and fabrics because it can bleach things fairly easily. Still, I won’t go back to other treatments. For the first time in my adult life I feel liberated from the scourge of acne.

SA causes an allergic reaction in my eyes, even though I don't get it in my eyes or near my eyes, other than the side of my temples, which is where the acne is and along my outer cheek area. I hated benzoyl peroxide before because it always burnt my face off! And also, if left on overnight, I would het horrible rashes down my neck. I was really scared trying it again because I felt I couldn’t take it... But now I only use it in the morning as a short contact therapy thing, and have had no bad reactions yet!! It seems to help regardless! I just rinse my face with some water, pat dry and put on benzoyl peroxide. Leave it on for 5 minutes to an hour or so, depending on what my day looks like, and then just wash my face with my regular face wash (I dont have a benzoyl face wash). Totally want to suggest people trying it out this way!!! Especially when you’re getting used to the stuff. Im actually sitting with the cream on my face right now. I do suggest NOT putting it on your neck, not even a little bit. If I go below my jawline, even on one spot, I stil get the rashes. Its strong stuff :). But by doing the short contact method I have had NO peeling yet!

Dr. Dray, You helped me not feel guilty for using BP. So many estheticians and consultants I've spoke to about my skin are pushing me to get off of BP even though its what clears me the best. I'm also so glad to hear it doesn't age my skin and create free radicals. That was always in the back of my mind. Hi Dr Dray, I would really appreciate some input on my plan. So currently I am using differin gel every night. I am washing my face and applying moisturizer prior to applying the differin. After watching this video I think my skin could benefit from some Benzoyl Peroxide. I liked the wash idea the most. Correct me if I am wrong but should I do the routine in this order? 1. BP wash and rinse 2. Cetaphil gentle cleanser (or not?) 3. CeraVe daily moisturizer 4. Apply differin 5. Go to bed AM 1. BP cleanser again? 2. Cetaphil gentle cleanser? 3. CeraVe daily moisturizer? Can I use the panoxyl stuff anywhere on my body? Thanks for any input! I’m so tired of dealing with my skin it’s so annoying. ALSO, what is your favorite go to moisturizer?

I am in need of ideas of when, in a skincare routine, to use my Benzamycin gel. I am 65 and have been using Benzamycin and Retin A very successfully for acne for 20 years. Any deviation and I break out.. but I am adding anti-aging serums etc and want to know in what order to use my products. Thank you!! Love your vivid analogies!!!

This has been very helpful! I've been avoiding BP due to how badly it irritates me. I saw in another one of your videos using a BP wash. That seems to be the way to go for me. Thank you for all of your honest and expert information!!

For the longest time I've been using a 10% benzoyl peroxide (that I buy for 3$ at target) and a plain baby wash as a cleanser.. only thing that seemed to ever work for my acne. If I miss a day of no benzoyl peroxide, my face will break out.

BP works really well for my forehead acne, but I guess my cheeks are more sensitive to it because the pimples on it tend to scar and look almost purple the next day. I moisturize very well and use a gentle cleanser but it doesn't make it better. Is there anything I can do to mitigate that? Thank you Dr Dray, you're the best!! Greetings from Morocco ^^

I am glad I watched this video. I wasn’t sure if using a benzoyl peroxide wash would be too harsh while using tretinoin. I have been using tretinoin for a couple of months now. It is compounded with coconut oil. Could that combination limit it’s effectiveness? I ask because I didn’t have much of a purge and had only had minimal peeling around my chin and lips.

The single ingredient talks is like giving us vocabulary to understand the other talks. All your videos are so super helpful. Thank you so very much for having a KZbin channel and for sharing your knowledge in an understandable manner. You are a true gem. 😊💙💙

In Spain I only found Peroxiben (Isdin), they have it in 2.5%, 5% and 10%. It's a cream, not a soap but still works like a dream. I don't need it for my face but for back acne it's almost magical, the only thing that has ever worked and only using it two, three times a week! (There is also Epiduo, of course, but I didn't count it since it has also adapalene and it is much more expensive)

Hi Dr Dray! Love your efforts to educate people on basic dermatological concepts! I’m a final year medical student from Australia and looking to get into dermatology as well :) Just an idea for a video I think could be really interesting is the principle or method of short contact therapy. In particular maybe a kind of literature review covering active ingredients (like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, tretinoin, sulfur, antifungals etc) in a wash off form (or even rinsing off topical medication after a few minutes) compared to leave on products, in terms of efficacy and irritation. You’ve touched on this a lot regarding salicylic acid/benzoyl peroxide washes, but it would be nice to hear your view on the effectiveness/tolerability of other irritating regimes like tretinoin, shown to be effective with SCT in acne! Happy Thursday!

BP even as a spot treatment makes my entire face blow up like I was stung by a swarm of bees..red, burning, completely swollen for 3 days. So embarrassing! I've tested it twice and I don't want to test it again 😖

@christyvale5 жыл бұрын
In my experience, yes. I usually use hydrating toner, humectant gel cream and moisturizer under 5% BP cream, and I am pretty sure that it's still working because my acnes would be calmer/smaller on the next few days.

This is my testimonial that you can develop a sensitivity to any ingredient, at any age. I used benzoyl peroxide treatments for years to treat my acne as a teen. But when I reached for some to treat a breakout last summer. I had a severe reaction, something akin to a chemical burn as far as I can tell. Such a shame that I can’t utilize it anymore, it was so effective.

As well as biotherm. I'd like to know her thoughts as well. I've enjoyed using then Avene and Vichy ones. Bioderma also has a similar product that helps prevent the itching/irritation that comes from a certain bacteria I can't name right now. But they can have a cooling feeling because it is cool water that's being sprayed out and heat will escape easier. I would reccomend it if you wear a cream humectants/emollients filled moisturized. Or to help heavier creams/balms spread easier on the skin. Where I live we have hard water, so I much prefer to use these.
