But I don't think that was the kind of "Sacrifice" the Hawks had in mind, nor was it an ending they felt they deserved after serving that piece of shit for so long. Maybe you can say they put him on too high of a pedestal, completely destroying any chance of Griffith considering them people with their own dreams. But even excluding the choice he made, which fans can have varying opinions on, everyone at the very least should be on the same page about what he did to Casca....It was really fucked up....

Actually, Griffith both needs him because of his strenght, and because he's the one person he feels he can rely on. He even likes him, like a brother and friend. Problem is, Griffith is obsessed with power and feels like it's normal to manipulate people for his means. Deep down, he actually feels friendship for Guts, but that's the only way he's able to express his feelings, possession. On the opposite side, Guts genuinely wants to be Griffith's friend, not is his subordinate or instrument. He wants to be his equal. And he understood he would never be able to do it unless he frees himself from his control, because Griffith himself literally said that he cannot consider a friend someone who isn't equal to him and follows his own path. Paradoxically, if he stays with him he won't feel like he deserves to be at his side. There's so much going on in this scene, it's really powerful. Pretty complex feelings. One of the best parts in the whole series.

something i never noticed in years of coming back to this: Judeau's eyes in the road. The whole series he has these moments where he guides the conversation or drops some hints. And the viewer can always tell he has some regret and levity about his own view of himself. Hes strongish, smartish, quickish, and charming. But he never seems really happy. In that moment of calling out to Guts to love casca, he is doing something almost no man ever does. He pushes her away. We learn later he always had a one sided love, Cynically maybe even an infatuation with Casca. But it was rooted in a deep care and respect. His eyes in that moment drop all pretense. No charm or wit or humor. It is a direct, maybe even fatherly challenge. Are you good enough to make her happy? And seeing him waver, he defers. Maybe some human relief for his ego and far flung hope, but then the charm returns and he reminds Guts that he does wish he were the one to be the one for someone he loves. One of the many so very human elements of this story I absolutely respect. And so so odd that a comic from the 90's about dark fantasy does such elements so much better than billion dollar studios.

Judeau always strikes me as a go-along-to-get-along type person. That's why he almost always has a small smile on his face. But when he directly asks Guts why he won't consider Casca, it's really himself he's asking that question to. That's why he looks so serious. It's one thing if Judeau can't have Casca, but a hesitant Guts *can* have her...which probably irks Judeau a little inside.

Note how he knows that Casca is in love with him, but abuses her by having her do things like sleep with Guts to keep him warm. He only cares about her when he sees that she's in love with Guts, because then he lost of source of narcissist feel goods. Guts is special to Griffith because he was practically an animal, incapable of human relationship. So to draw someone like that in and gain their unwavering loyalty? You can see what that would be a crowning narcissist achievement beyond even gaining his goal of having his own kingdom. I mean, not even a king would be able to get the loyalty of a man like Guts. And so in that light you can see how seeing Guts mature to the point of not needing Griffith anymore would be the most unbearable thing in the world for him.

I haven't seen the anime, I'm reading the manga (lost children arc) and I honestly found the scene so powerful. Griffith had such a huge vision and a dream he wanted to come true, and guts not only being his most valuable warrior, but the one person he could trust to show his dark side to get dirty work done was going to be his golden ticket to truly reach there. The mere fact that this went from guts and Griffith battling the first time, and Griffith winning gracefully, to him almost having his entire right side cut off in just one swing from guts not only reveals how much stronger guts has become but how much Griffith has to lose now. If they were enemies at this point in time, he would have lost the battle, his life, and his dreams. How could someone who wanted a kingdom for himself ever achieve that if he could be killed so easily in one swing from a person as strong as guts? That realization alone makes this scene so great to me.
@yumyumeatemup3 жыл бұрын
I always took away from this scene, not only that Gut's shook Griffith's confidence in himself by his effortless defeat, but also Griffith's top lieutenants' faith in him as well. In a single stroke all that progress and confidence in himself and in his dream came unraveled. How could any man who wanted to be king be so easily defeated? Had this been a battle Guts would have killed him in a single stroke and all his hard work would have been for nothing. So of course he had to "set the universe right", things needed to make sense again. He got over zealous and charged head long into his goals and so he bedded the Princess in his panic and grief. All the careful posturing, patience and strategy that helped jockey himself into position as one day inheritor of the throne recklessly abandoned in a single decision.

This whole scene is simply fantastic. The dawn in the background signifies the beginning of something new, as Guts goes out to seek his own destiny. Griffith’s obsessive control over Guts, being unable to truly come to terms with his emotions towards him, and how it’s all over in just a single moment. Griffith loses everything in the very moment his sword breaks, and you can see it in his eyes. The tragedy of it all, is that Guts believed that through his dream to find himself, Griffith would be able to see him as a friend, without ever realizing that Griffith had already done so for years in his own possessive way.

Griffith's aiming to marry Charlotte for political power at that time. Plus, when chatting with Charlotte alone, Griffith clearly explains that he views his soldiers, including Casca, never as his true comrades, but only mere tools to achieve his dream. Basically, Casca knew of his intentions so she picked Guts over Griffith.

for some reason it irks me that they removed the tree from the manga. the shade it casts on griffiths sword while guts is shining in the sun, symbolizing guts rising and finding purpose as griffith falls and loses his. idk lol it doesn’t diminish the scene its just an iconic panel with nice symbolism wish they would’ve kept it

Without a doubt, this is one of the most poignant and important events in all of Berserk. Griffith, who up until this point was seemingly invincible and invulnerable (except when he and Guts faced Zodd), has suffered pretty much the greatest loss of his life. Early on, he lost a kid who followed him in battle when he was getting the Band of the Hawk together and it haunted him, but it was a means to an end to achieve his ambition, although he stated that, "My dream probably got this kid killed." Casca even told Guts that after that, Griffith changed. But upon meeting Guts, claiming his life, placing him in his band, and running campaigns and battles with him for three years, Griffith was desperate beyond all measure to prevent the man that would carry him to his ambitions from leaving...and he was utterly powerless to prevent it for the first time...ever. Zodd even warned Guts that "When this man's ambition crumbles, you will be destined to face your death." This is Griffith's first encounter ever of losing his ambition by losing Guts: his sword and his means of greater glory.

This scene is so amazing to me. It really put you in two minds about Griffith and Guts (if you didn't get it so far). In one hand, Griffith was decided to kill Guts, one of his most important men and the one who helped him get where they are at that time... And on the other hand, Guts feeling worthy about that showdown and decided to go his own way no matter what. Guts intention was not to kill Griffith and it shows how much of a great human being he is. Love this piece

God the symbolism here. Griffith claimed Guts with that sword; it's an object that symbolizes their bond. And Guts slices it in two. He parts with the majority of the Hawk without much quarrel or rancor, but his bond with Griffith is severed and left in the snow.

Its amazing that this scene can confirm so many peoples theories about what it means for the character: Is Griffith a narcissist who cant let Guts go because it strikes his ego? Is Griffith desperate to win because he doesent want to lose the only man he considers a true friend? Is Griffith destined to lose no matter what to suffer the consequences wich ultimatly lead him to the God Hand? Does Griffith have very real Romantic feelings for Guts and cant stand to see him go? Damn, what a genius writer Miura was...

It's what makes anime so great compared to current Hollywood. It doesn't hit us in the head with explaining everything and it doesn't try to make us think however they want us to think.. it's all left the viewer's imagination and leaves a mystery behind that before we know it we can't stop thinking about it.
@mahtri31252 жыл бұрын
This scene feels more natural than the newer version, Guts is in more character and his reaction to Griffith refusal is exactly as in the manga. Props to the anime team in the 90's, no revisionist stuff but actually a loyal portrait of what Miura tries to communicate. Also Kentaro Miura, was involved in all sketchs and props (concept art of armors, weapons, etc) of the characters during the animation.
