14 years ago I had a spinal cord injury resulting in a nerve being severed which of course resulted in foot drop. It took my consultant 18 months to do an MRI then inform me I should go home as there wasn't anything they could do for me. I had to work hard to relearn how to walk and run again.....although the run is more a hop skip and a jump. I learned to cycle and I joined the gym plus practiced stretching etc. I've probably got about 40% use of my foot which is far better than it was. I'll never wear high heels again and I certainly can't wear flats. I do find wearing a small heel (1.5 inch) helps my heel to hit the floor first. I wear a lot of trainers. Hard shoes are out for me. I find Skechers shoes are ok.....but I'm always on the lookout for more comfort with style.

In my early 20s I had a bad fall and ended up compressing L3, 4, and 5. Then came the sciatic pain. I was bedbound for 18 months with intense, unrelenting sciatic pain and could find no comfort in anything. One day I woke up and he pain was just gone, but the problem didn't end there. I've now been walking with foot drop in 18 years. All because of one fall.

I habitually crossed my legs for years. Then I noticed my foot making the flopping sound when I walked. And I could barely lift my right foot off the gas pedal while driving. I had noticed numbness in both my lower outside legs and then in front of my leg, crossing down to even my big toe. I thought I had nerve damage and it would get worse. Then a young neurologist asked me..."Do you CROSS YOUR LEGS?" I looked at him and said, yes I do all the time. He said this could be the cause. I stopped crossing my legs, which is still a temptation, and slowly began exercises to strengthen the muscles that lift my foot up & down. When you cross your legs it can put lots of pressure on a nerve that travels around the outside of the knee, around the front of the leg and down to your toes, think big toe area. It is one of the main ones that innervates the muscles that lift and rotate your foot. I then did exercises to strengthen these muscles. Been 5 years, full motion at 67. Thank goodness for that young doctor asking, "Do you cross your legs?"...

I slipped in wet grass and hyperextended my knee resulting in foot drop and 4 subsequent surgeries to repair and reconstruct, also one of the surgeries was due to infection. My left foot used to drag and hang to the side. I began having my partner give me deep tissue massages all up and down my leg and foot and ankle and because of the nerve damage it felt like hell.......but over time more feeling came back and I was able to tolerate the deep massaging and touch. I also began incorporating these exercises and also standing on my toe tips holding the wall and now I don't walk with a steppers gait, I walk normal. My foot doesn't hang over and I can almost dorsel flex my left foot up to the same flexion as my right within maybe a half inch, where I used to not be able to dorsel flex whatsoever. My orthopedic surgeon and neurologist were stunned by the progress and recovery of function.

@@bardlemon5635 you got this brother! Listen to me MASSAGE MASSAGE MASSAGE! All up and down your leg especially in the numb tingly parts, and same with foot and ankle. It may feel weird, and painful for a while, DON'T STOP, yell out, cringe, make faces, but let them massage DEEP into that tissue and nerve.......twice a day if you can tolerate. Won't happen overnight but I swear by it. I was fitted for a custom orthotic brace from calf to ankle........I never bothered picking it up, but I don't advise that for others. I was determined I was not going to limp forever and I don't anymore

When I walk barefoot or in sandals my toes all visibly lift and the tendons tighten as I lift that foot. Back in October 2021, I had a lumbar puncture to determine if I had West Nile Virus. I did. Long story short, I was in excruciating pain for weeks afterwards. Extreme weakness in my right led. Months later, the weakness has subsided by about 40% in the leg. However, I am left with an atrophied calf muscle and a very weak foot and swollen ankle. Nothing in connection to West Nile would have done this. I did have meningitis and encephalitis as well. I can go up on my toes with my left foot but not my right. I can cross my toes on my left but no longer on my right. I have to lift my right leg each time I take a step. My pain management doctor believes the nerve was damaged during the lumbar puncture. Would you be inclined to agree with him?

After a year, it is unlikely you will get any meaningful return. So sorry to hear about this! All my best to you! Take care! Bob

Foot drop was one of my first MS symptoms. Unfortunately, there is no physical therapy that can change this.

I do too because of MS. In fact, the whole right side of my body is extremely weak and there's no chance of me ever recovering. I wear a AFO just to walk (poorly, of course). I'm now a lefty for over ten years, but I try to keep moving as a shadow of my former self. PEACE

@@Wysiwyg43 My entire left side is paralyzed. I lost the ability to walk in 2006. I'm sorry that you're dealing with MS too.

IT'S CRAZY I'M 46 YEARS OLD. I'VE BEEN IN THIS NURSING HOME ALMOST TWO YEARS. I HAVE SEVERE NEUROPATHY AND FOOT DROP AND CAN'T WALK. I'VE BEEN LIKE THIS A FEW YEAR'S ALREADY. THEY DON'T KNOW THE CAUSE. I DON'T HAVE DIABETES. I HAVE SLIGHT SCOLIOSIS ON MY LOWER BACK. I'VE ALWAYS HAD THE BACK PROBLEM. I WANT TO BE ABLE TO WALK AGAIN. I DON'T FEEL THIS NURSING HOME IS HELPING ME. WHAT CAN I DO? I WANT TO WALK AGAIN.
