Ryan, I was going to ask what a helmet peak is actually for... and I realized... As someone new to motorcycles and helmets, I think a video about helmet design and details would be a huge help for newer riders. A video explaining why certain helmets are shaped certain ways, what the features are actually for, what to look for when buying a helmet and how to chose one for your type of riding. A few points for noobies would be; - What are helmet peaks for, advantages and disadvantages, etc. - Explain the shapes of different types of helmets and what the design elements are for, like slippery race helmets designed for a tight tuck, vs a comfortable touring helmet.. etc. - Explaining the common features and their consequences, such as certain hipster helmets that might look good but be less safe, or the pros and cons of certain features and amenities like drop down visors and stuff like that. So many people say stuff like "That helmet looks cool but it's garbage!" Like the Bullit or Gringo... but why? What makes them garbage? - Value and affordability. Too many new riders get pressured into buying expensive gear, because snobs convince them that more money automatically means more safe. Maybe explain why certain helmets are more expensive. Is it brand mark up? Are the materials worth it? Are there features not obvious to a newbie? I think a video like that could help a ton of new riders and I trust you would do it justice! P.S. I just got my first helmet, the Shark Evoline 3 in matte black, and I have 3M black reflective vinyl and I'm going to make my own design! I chose it because I'm claustrophobic and wanted something that could help me transition from a open to a full face helmet and it was perfect for me.

i got the gmax gm 11 a few years ago specifically for winter for winter commuting. SD winters are as bad as most of canada, rode all the way down to -15F one evening just for the test of it, a tiny air leak froze inside the lens so i had to reseal and i kept going no issue. i always wore a balaclava to help catch breaths, but the winter kit with the nose seal mostly helped cold are from blowing up into my eyes. Couldn't be happier with the gmax gm11. i dont winter commute anymore, only use it for a summer trail riding helmet

I own a GM11. Even if this review sound a bit bad, I would recommend it. Ryan gave the good sides of it, and he's right. Take my review as a long-term abused review. I did over 75 000km in 3 years with it. Bought the clear and dark smoked single lens as well and I recommend you doing that & taking care of em; especially if you off road, because they are pretty fragile to scratches. But overall I like the helmet. Its a good all-arounder for the price. Over time, the "clickers" that keeps the visor up keep breaking off. I broke problably 4 pairs of those since I have it, so order a few sets if you intend to keep it because it's going to happen (about 5$ each, but it's pretty annoying if you dont have a spare set... (keep in mind I was wearing it 10h/day, every day, for 9 months). The vents sliders came off (and lost em) pretty fast as well. The beak is a weird shaped wing that either pulls your head down or catch any buffeting winds, so you want to take it off unless you have a bay-window as a windscreen... I found that it also does't seal of properly when riding in hard rain condition.

First and foremost, I absolutely love your reviews RyanF9, keep up the great work! One comment regarding the XD-4, which I've put over 50K miles on mine, the Pinlock sucks!!! First of all, for a lid this pricey, make the Pinlock standard, don't have it as an option, but what's happening with mine now going on 5 times, is the Pinlock lens won't seal properly, allowing for dust particles to get sucked in between the lens and face shield, resulting in the scratching/scuffing of the interior of the face shield. I cannot tell you how many emails, phone calls, helmet shipping back and forth to Arai etc. I've done on this issue, but bottom line, Arai admitted it was a design flaw, and replaced the shield and lens one time, gratis. For this reason alone, I'll never purchase another Arai.

Having owned the Bell MX9 Adventure now for 4 months I have to agree with most of your comments on it. Here in Australia it offers excellent value for money. I'm in Queensland and findnit offers great ventilation and when compared to my road helmet, An Arai RX-Q, a helmet lauded for its quietness, I find the Bell much quieter even on the street. The only two drawbacks for me, personally, are the clear visor can introduce some distortion if only partly opened, and the padding doesnt allow sunglasses to be worn, although i have been using some 'bobster' style goggles both on and off road with great success. over all I am amazed at this lid and very happy to find my melon actually fits nicely into something other than an Arai.

As always, fantastic reviews Ryan. However, I've had an XD4 for several years now (mostly on-road, adv touring, x-country riding), and I was immediately upset by the fact that Arai doesn't include a pinlock shield, which is absolutely a necessity with this lid. Only problem, when I installed mine, the insert caught on the gasket around the helmet opening when opening the visor, effectively rendering the pinlock useless. I contacted Arai, who had me ship the lid to their Allentown, PA US hqs...after several weeks of playing with the helmet, they actually shipped it to Japan for their engineers to trouble-shoot! I finally get it back many weeks later, and problem solved...so I thought. After riding across the Trans-Canada and up to Prudhoe Bay, the insert separated, dust got in between the inside of the insert and shield, and totally scratched the inside of my shield. I contacted Arai, and they basically told me this is a known problem, where the insert will not stay sealed, due to the curvature of the shield (and something they and Pinlock obviously have never sorted out). Arai comp'd me a new shield and insert, only for this to happen now 5 more times and counting, so I'm approaching the cost of the helmet in just shields and inserts! That aside, I love everything about this lid, however, the fact that Arai never sorted this pinlock issue, and the time spent emailing, calling, and shipping my helmet (several times) to Arai, makes me never want to purchase another Arai again. My next adv helmet will probably be a Shoei.

Great review. Own an XD4, which is really quiet compared to some of the other helmets I've worn. So aerodynamically quiet, I heard so many more engine noises I took my bike to the shop to find out what the heck was wrong with the bike? Also works great with communication systems.

I know this is an old video, but glasses are super uncomfortable to wear in a helmet and it wrecks them real fast, so corrective goggles are heaps better, being able to use goggles with a visor may not seem like a useful option to most but for some it's a game changer, your perifrial bison with goggles on vs glasses is huge, especially when you literally can't actually see where your glasses sent because your blind without them, they cause headaches to ride with

there is a reason for wearing goggles underneath the closed visor i got an arai XD4 and it doesnt have drop down sun glasses. thats why i got the dark tinted visor installed in summer all the time, but since i often cant stop riding and have to ride home in the dark is usually got clear goggles on too. offroad i really dont like tinted goggles so i wear them, then when i get on the road to ride home i just close my visor and suddenly "Oh it gets dark" just open the visor and still got clear goggles underneath. i dont have to stop riding that way and since the eyeport of the XD4 is not overly huge there is still not a lot of wind and noise passing the goggles like it would in a dirt bike helmet. in winter i do it exactly the other way around. i dont have sunglasses so i take my tinted goggles even if im only riding on the road because the sun is low and blinding a lot in winter. just close the clear visor and get even less cold air into your face. the little bit that gets into the arai is held off by the goggles. nothing fogs up, also if it does the arai has that function on the chin vent to only let the air blow at the visor from the inside and not blow in my face

I have the MX-9 Adventure and Shoei Hornet-X and one other consideration is how they fit with glasses. The MX-9 presses the ear pieces into the side of my head. I don’t have that issue with any of my Shoei helmets. You should try helmets on with glasses when you do these reviews.

Ryan, good job on the videos, and thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughts how YOU see it. Never mind the NaySayers. Keep it just like you are IMO. I've actually bought, demo'd, and returned a few of these helmets including the Shoei X2, and I'm a Shoei diehard. Agree, it's large, vibes at 65mph+, ugh. Glad you noted the Bell MX-9. It is a solid value if you don't need adjustable vents. Also, you may want to check out another...I tried the Suomy MX Tourer, returned it, way too narrow even one size up. Super light at 2.97lbs, but not for me. Close. Finally caved in and bought the "gold standard", Arai XD-4 Mission, as you noted. Quality, but you pay the price for it. Thought/Recommendation: Include updates on each helmet about which ones can accommodate comm unit speakers. Some helmets may not have pockets but do offer recess areas to hide large Sena speakers, etc. People are starting to buy DS helmets based on what fits comm units now days too. Keep up the great work. Thanks.

I've put about 15,000 miles on my Hornet X2 and I don't find it quiet at all. In fact, I have to wear earbuds/plugs or I'll get a headache after an hour or two. I get really loud wind noise coming up my neck just behind my ears where the side neckpad meets the rear pad. Since they're separate pieces it seems to create a gap when wearing the helmet. Pretty disappointed after spending so much on it, but maybe the shape of my neck is the problem? Also, even with the chin curtain, a lot of air comes up through the chin area, which sucks on cold mornings. Other than that, it's a fantastic everyday and light dualsporting helmet. The peak comes off in seconds for lengthy highway commutes and even at 80+mph it's a really aerodynamic helmet without the peak. Love the pinlock too.

Hey Ryanf9, for an 80/20 adventure rider, would you say the X2 is worth the extra $$$ over the Variant where street noise and weight are the 2 very important aspects. I'm in the market for a new ADV helmet currently using an MSR Expedition and Fly Trekker... Wondering what you believe I might notice by upgrading and spending more money. Thanks
@FortNine8 жыл бұрын
Hey Adam! Unfortunately, yes. The Hornet will feel lighter and it's noticeably quieter too. The Variant is a great helmet as well, but it simply isn't as good. *Unless* you have a long oval head, in which case the Variant will be a more comfortable fit. I think you'll notice a big difference moving from the Trekker and Xpedition to either helmet. Mainly quietness and aerodynamics will be greatly improved. Also the build quality on the vents and shield is noticeably better, in my experience. I normally shy away from the "you get what you pay for" mantra, because it's usually an excuse to make people spend more money. But in this case, yeah, the Hornet is worth the extra $$. ~RyanF9

My usual size is XS(53-54cm), should I stick with it? Keep up the great work and ride safe.
@FortNine7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd stick with your usual size. The Variant fits like most helmets - I'm a medium in 90% of the lids I try, and I'm a medium in the Variant too. Bear in mind that it is a long oval head shape, so it will fit narrower on the sides and longer front to back than a more typical lid. Cheers! ~RyanF9

Thank you for your time and help! If I may, I'd like to recommend both categorizing and stating what shape the helmets are on your website. It's be so nice if we could search for helmets by their shape on F9.

Really enjoying your channel. Short and sweet reviews. Just wondering, whenever you mention prices, are they in CAN dollars?
@FortNine8 жыл бұрын
+John W Yes, always Canadian dollars! I'm a Canuck through and through. The prices in these videos reflect the price at canadasmotorcycle.ca *on the day we filmed the video*. Of course, some of the numbers have gone up or down a bit since then. ~RyanF9

Is it normal for adv helmet to let inside deafing volumes of wind above 50km/h and also water if it happends to rain? I own 20$ helmet that is quieter and more rain resistant than my adv one.
@FortNine6 жыл бұрын
Nah, not really normal. Sounds like you got a bad egg. ~RF9

Would you say that your Icon is better than all of the ones in this vid though?
@FortNine8 жыл бұрын
Nope. My Icon is a pretty good street helmet, but it's not very capable for off-road riding. ~RyanF9

Your show rocks dude. I just picked up 2006 V-Strom. 650. So I'm being introduced to the world of off road now. This leads to more equipment. In the mean time is it bad to use my HJC f19 helmet on the trails? I quickly realised that my street boots were really slippery . i mostly ride pavement

which icon helmet do you use as my primary usage will be pavement with 10% dirt/offroad in the Himalayan ranges and rest is primarily highway driving

Hi Ryan, hope you are well, congrats for the wonderful content! Wanted to reach out and ask you if you think I can use an HJC RPHA 11 (street bike helmet) with an adventure bike? Do you think ventilation or other aspects would be negatively affected? Even in cold climates? I was never too satisfied with my Arai XD4 while riding on the pavement... Many thanks for sharing your opinion or experience.

Hi , how about update review a modular dualsport helmets :) pls

Arai XD4 is not pinlock ready. Does it fog up?
@FortNine6 жыл бұрын
Not too badly - you can always use some anti-fog treatment if it bothers you. I think RainX makes one! ~RF9

What's your guy's thoughts on the AGV AX-8 DS? I also wanted to say that your channel is looking great. I've liked it all so far 👌
@FortNine8 жыл бұрын
+Chase S In my opinion, the AX-8 suffers from poor product positioning. If I'm on a budget or primarily interested in off-roading, I'd do just as well in the much-cheaper MX-9 Adventure. And if I'm prepared to spend $500ish on an AX-8, I should probably save a bit more and get the far-superior Arai XD-4 for $700ish. There's nothing wrong with the AX-8, it's a solid helmet. I just can't see a reason to choose it. ~RyanF9

+Chase S Also, thanks for liking our stuff! ~RyanF9

+Chase S The AX-8 is lighter than an XD4, and looks absolutely badass. Much more storm trooper/fighter pilot vibes than the XD. It vents really well and looks much more finished when you take the peak off if you're pounding out miles of slab. Fit is a little narrow I found, and there is a noticeable quality difference between the AGV and the Japanese lids.

Great review, Ryan! How about Nexx XD1? I'm looking at it because of its tons of feature. Is that really matter?
@FortNine8 жыл бұрын
+Panyawat Muangtham Tough question! It really depends what you value. For myself, the Arai is better at doing "the basics." It has a superior build quality and the fit is more comfortable and customizable. But if you value the features (especially the drop-down sun visor) then the XD1 is a great choice. It's similar to the XD-4 in terms of weight and road noise, by the way. ~RyanF9

A Gmax is 150USD in America?!?! You guys get ripped off. They're made in Taiwan (same as Biltwell etc), it's 2500Taiwan Dollars (84USD) for the solid colours, and 2700 for the graphic ones (90USD).
