Best Alternative to Lead Clips EVER🚨?

I have been carpfishig for more than 60 years, especially in the 80s there were a lot of new developments and also the carp fisheries where they put 500 carp over 30 pound in a small to middle big lake. I never fished is this kind of lakes I am only fishing in open water what is much more difficult but give me much more satisfaction. My whole life, I am fishing with a running rig without swingers what is for me the best system the only downside is when you have a lot of snags underwater than the best option is a lead clip and the use of swingers to get a good drop back registration. Using a running rig will also give you a better registration on small fish and when fishing with braid especially on distances over 300 mtr. I love this KZbin channel and also Matthew he is very serious, maybe a little too much, but I like him a lot, and he is a real professional and a pleasure to listen to him

hi matt, I got this system from nash in england because it was unavailable in germany for a long time. this autumn I will be testing it for the first time. I'm excited. I also modified the system to fish with a rubber band and stones. when the carp runs or makes its first strong movement, the stone comes out of the rubber band and the fish is not affected by the weight. 300-400g is no problem, but of course it has to be brought out with a bait boat or boat. it's an alternative to the korda heli safe, which I also use with stones. I don't think lead in the water is that great. greetings from germany and tight lines

Just about every carp angler angles unsafe in my eyes nearly all fish a mainline at 15lb but then have a hooklink that is 20lb or 25lb

Dear Matt many many thanks for the advice , I tried this Nash system in France while I was trying to catch big carp and it really worked like a charm. In combination with a barbless hook, I had a single but a very good bite ..and boom! A beautiful mirror over 25 kg caught this November. Dish didn't feel anything.This system is awesome !

This concept is similar to a using a running ledger boom used in shore fishing, with some carpy improvements of course. this method is proven to be very effective, i look forward to trying that at my local lake

bought some of these, make sure you buy plenty of leads, lost every lead on take today, going to be changing back to a lead clip and slightly crimp the ring swivel and turn it into a running clip, I wouldn't mind if I was catching 30lbers but only 10-15lb carp

Hi Karl, yes, I’ve found the same thing and mentioned it in the video, smaller carp in shallow lakes tend to give savage takes, and if you’re catching multiple carp in a day, this system is not the right solution, as you’ve found out. I know what you mean about crimping the swivel and I know it’s promoted by some companies and anglers but it’s really not a good idea. If something goes wrong, that setup can become very dangerous for the carp and it’s definitely not something I would want to see any anglers use at my lake. Your videos are genuinely very interesting and informative. Still, I think it's a shame that the UK is so far behind in carp fishing. There are such beautiful systems available today that are REALLY safe for fish. In the UK, however, this is not yet the case because the major brands do not want to give in. Here in the Netherlands people nowadays fish with systems where the fish actually loses everything except the rig. So the fish not only loses the lead, but also all those meters of line that it normally drags after a line break. It would be nice if someone in the UK started leading by example to promote these fish-safe systems. Think of the 'Central Shocker' systems from Pole Position or the 'Hit & Run' systems from PB Products. Or just always use a helicopter system, these are just as fish safe, because the fish loses everything after a line break, except the rig.

@@aarondavies8486 I do not agree. If a carp needs to 'break' the rig, they have already destroyed their mouths. If you use a montage thats really 'safe', then the carp will lose everything with exception of the rig. In the UK 'fish safe systems' means that the carp must get rid of the lead when it's snagged or when the mainline is cut. After this snap the carp will still swim around with the rig AND all those meters with mainline or leader. In the Netherlands 'fish safe systems' mean when you use a montage when the carp loses EVERYTHING (except the rig) after a line break. It's a shame that the big brands in the UK doesn't want to admit that there are lead systems available that are much more safe for the fish, then this leadclip that is promoted in this video. In my opinion all these leadclips from the big brands should be banned straight away. And I'm talking about the big brands that are setting the wrong example, but I am also referring to the populair and well-known anglers in the UK who do not want to admit that they are wrong with these leadclips that finally DESTROY the fish.

@twincarpNL you obviously not even read my comment you just contradicted yourself like I said if I snap or get snagged all I ever lose is the hook or the rig as you call it and I use barbless hooks so if it does snap thw hook can be discarded easy the mouth damage comes more from inexperienced or match anglers or divs using 25lb hooklink with 12lb mainline matt Collins did a good video on the usage of smaller hooks and hooklink

If I’m using multi rigs then I use Armourlink because I can re-use the hooklink many times. I mostly use mono rigs when I’m casting my rigs as I need them to be tangle free in flight. I don’t understand your concern about fishing close to margins 🤔 I fish close to margins all the time with running rigs and it’s not an issue at all. I often connect the lead using some type of rotten bottom connection (a plastic run ring that breaks at a known amount of force or just some thin mono). If your mainline breaks, the line passes very quickly through the run ring so it’s completely safe and if something does go wrong then the lead will break away from the ring. Its funny to me that many running clips including fox ones and from the pole position are never designed to work with rig tubing including the fact that many fisheries banned any kind of leader and require rig tube to be used. After a decade plus of underwater footage, I haven't seen one fish that hasn't instantly realised its been pricked by a hook, running rig or not, they know when that bait hasn't been ejected properly or hasn't been sucked back to the throat within a second, at which then they begin to either shake on the spot or bolt. Never have I seen a fish not realise it hasn't been hooked because of a running rig through, in person or in footage. Great looking clip though, definitely will make it harder to use the lead to eject the rig for sure

Nice idea, but i believe your shock and run rig setup (free running) using a traditional led clip is superior. Im more likely to retain an easily removeable lead and am provided with an instant bolt effect instead of needing the clutch to be tightened somewhat as shown here. Interesting video nethertheless

Personally I use pva tape on lead clips this way the lead drops ever time and the tail rubber only holds the tubing in place no need to go over the lead clip arm what holds the lead in place for casting, there's still enough weight for the carp to get hooked but on a shake the leads of straight away, it's much cheaper and fish safety is number 1 priority

Hi, yes, that's the right and safe way of fishing with lead clips. If you ever want to try a system where you don't have to dump the lead on every take then this system is a good option to get into running leads 😊 You don't need the weight of the lead to prick the fish. As long as you use a semi tight clutch and razor sharp hooks, the elasticity of the mainline and the force from the clutch does the hooking. Cheers, Matt

Hi Pete, yes, but only if you fish with an open bail arm or with a free spool facility engaged - which is not advised. The highest I’ve seen the clip up the line is 5ft. When the fish comes in close, the clip slides back down to the swivel. I always fish with a semi tight clutch which locks the clip on the line sooner nearer the lead. Interesting little gadget. Can I ask though, obviously there's a convenience issue with running leads - especially in-lines. What's stopping me from having a loop-to-loop connection above the rig tubing, with the loop connection protected by a tungsten sinker that would allow a sliding lead to shoot over it to still be truly free running? Then it's a case of just looping it off, slipping on an in-line lead and looping it back on. You could then have a few solid PVA bags set up with rig plus rig tubing. If the mainline loop's big enough to go over the PVA bag, that would make a pretty quick-change set up, certainly much quicker than needing to remake a PVA bag every time.

Hi Chris, I see what you’re proposing and why you may believe it’s doable but there could be a problem with your idea. The only reason why you’d use tubing for solid PVA bags is if leaders are banned. By having a loop to loop connection above the tubing you have in effect added a leader and a knot which is another potential point of weakness. I know that you intend on using another piece of mainline for the tubing to sit on but it’s still a leader. I think any bailiff would take one look at that and ask you to change it for a conventional setup. Sorry mate but solid PVA bags and tubing just don’t work well together. Hope that makes sense. I understand your concern but it's not an issue. Use a semi-tight clutch to limit the distance the run clips rises up the line. Once the carp comes in closer the line angle changes and the clip slides down to the swivel due to the weight of the lead. Very interesting Matt. You touched on it but would the delayed contact or running style not mean less of an ability to set the hook. Thought that was part of the original Eureka of bolt rigs. I know you’ve explained a head shake can actually go the other way but any thoughts on the bolt action?

Great question Niall. For me, bolt rigs are dead! The carp are using the shock effect to throw the rig. The hook is set by the weight of the line going back to your rod and your clutch. I always fish semi locked up to aid this. Trust me, running rigs will out fish any semi fixed lead systems. There are plenty of other fisheries in France with big carp that say exactly the same thing.

@@invaliduser1111 If you need to fish 100m, you’re going to have to use a shock leader and low diameter mainline. If you want to use the Nash run clip, in this configuration, your choice of mainline and leader is critical because if the leader knot is too large, the tail rubber on the run clip will not pass cleanly over the top - which can be dangerous. Other than that, if you’ve got the tools and the skills, then you can achieve that range with the Nash run clip. You might have to use a slightly lower diameter boilie to compensate for the additional drag of the clip. The other option is to use a basic running lead with a large diameter run ring which passes cleanly over the top of the leader knot. I think this is a safer option. Hi this looked brilliant idea and i tried it few times! But twice now i have had a problem with it! If the fish manages to move say 6ft away with the hook before showing as a take and locking up the clip, then when bringing it in as i get it near the net the lead & clip are (as supposed to) have locked but the lead & clip are now touching my end ring! And can't wind in any further unless i slacken the line to allow lead & clip to slide down line this then gives fish chance to loose the hook!

Hi Dave, I would tighten up your clutch and maybe add a light back lead. This will put more tension on the line and the clip won’t travel as far up your line. On the odd occasion that I was playing a carp right in front of me, if I kept the rod tip high directly over the fish, eased off the pressure slightly, then the lead slid back down to the swivel without an issue. If this is still not happening, it may be because you’re using a very light lead. I mostly use 3oz with this system. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt

Irrelevant for me with my truly running set up, but it's absolutely enough to jam a crushed swivel lead clip.

Hi mate, no not quite. I fished this system with a tight line and a lightweight back lead and didn't fish much with a slack line. You can fish both ways. No matter what your line tension is, the important thing is to fish with a semi tight clutch and rock solid bankside setup. It's the clutch that's doing the hooking for you. Cheers, Matt

When you've used the needle to put the sleeve onto your leader you then attach the swivel, but how does it stay on , just looks like you pass the leader through the swivel and it doesn't tie off. To me it looks like it could just slide off .. Sorry its hard to explain 😂

@@Daedro1888 I'm using a hollow spliceable leader (the Nash cling-on). When the leader is under tension, the outer weave squeezes tightly on to the inner weave and the splice is locked tight. I splice the material to create a loop at each end. The swivel is attached by the loop to loop method. The sleeve that covers the swivel stays in place by friction. Hi Aaron, I had a pack of the weed green version which looks exactly the same semi translucent green colour that they used to call diffusion camo. To my eye it’s exactly the same, they just changed the name. Check a pack out the next time you are in a tackle shop and see what you think 🙂

Hi Matt, interesting video! Is this clip safe to use with sinking braided mainline and a spliced lead free leader that provides a small amount of stretch ? Or is it best to fish this set up with mono? (I mainly use sinking braid on the waters I fish due to zebras on lake bed). I currently use helicopters on lead core with stiff booms but I am looking to chance to lead clip systems with the use of semi stiff boom between 7-9 inch depending on if I’m on hard bottom or plugging silt. On that, how do you find these fishing in silt? Any advise would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi mate, 1) If you want to use braid and lead free leader, the run clip will work. I’d fish it with a tight line to the lead as you don’t want the zebra mussels coming anywhere near your mainline. With the run clip, you will be dumping the lead every time anyway due to the shock of the braid but the run clip still offers the advantage of preventing the carp from using the weight of the lead against you on the pickup. 2) I’m surprised you’re fishing with sinking braided mainline in this situation. I have used Spiderwire with zebra mussels but that’s a floating braid. 3) My go to approach for zebra mussels is 20lb Nash Bullet and 10m of 40lbs (0.60) Nash heavy duty snag leader. That’s okay for short range or for boating rigs out but the leader knot is too large for the Nash run clip. The run clip works with 12lb Bullet and 0.50 leader, but that’s the max it can handle and you need to go heavier in your situation. When I need 0.60, I use a Fox plastic run ring and use a Nash heli sleeve as a buffer bead to create a running rig. 4) I’ve caught loads with the run clip over silt. Hope that helps, Cheers, Matt.

Hi mate, to some extent it would depend on the leadless leader you are using. I find the 40lb Nash Cling-on to be relatively thin and smooth and the run clip flies up and down it. I’ve not tested it with the 65lbs version which is thicker. As long as it runs freely I wouldn't worry 👍

Hi mate, this clip is designed to drop the lead when necessary, so I’d use it on weedy lakes. If you don’t need to drop the lead, just fish a standard running lead (plenty of examples on this channel) 😊

Hi Mark, I fished this system with a tight line and a lightweight back lead, didn't fish much with a slack line. You can fish both ways. No matter what your line tension is, the important thing is to fish with a semi tight clutch and rock solid bankside setup. Hi Matthew i see the clip allows line to run through until a straight line of tension is added then it locks off but is there a chance of the clip locking up after a carp has taken 20 ft of line if using a slacker line and then jamming at the top rod ring when netting a fish stuck at 20 ft out and only a 6ft landing net.? Hi mate, I’m concerned that you’re allowing the fish to move 20ft away from you before applying tension to it. You can fish this system with a slack line but I would always recommend using a semi tight clutch so that once the slack is gone, the carp has to rip line from the clutch. The tension in your clutch will limit how far the clip rises up the line. I never had this clip move more than 5ft. Most of the time, it stayed on the leader. On a couple of occasions, when the clip did come off the leader onto the mainline, I found that as soon as the fish came under the rod tip and started circling, during the pauses between lunges, the clip slides back down next to the hooklink and the problem goes away. It does feel a bit weird when this happens, just like playing them on a zig. This is a small price to pay on a few occasions imo for the benefits this system offers. Hope that helps. Cheers, Matt

@@waynesfishingadventures Ah, OK, totally get why you're concerned about the clip sliding away. I fish a very similar configuration when river carping with steep banks, deep margins and boat traffic. I also fish with back leads, and the pressure from the back lead and the drag on the line is easily enough for the clip to lock into place, so imo you won't have an issue. Hi Mark, I'd use a 3oz lead. If you're using a bait boat with the run clip, I'd use a basic mono hair rig or mono d rig tied with 0.40 mono. You don't want to use braid with this clip in a boat as there's a tangle risk.

Hi mate, I fished my local river last year with this system and it worked great, I only lost a couple of leads. I use leads up to 4.5oz as we don't have big boats. If you're using bigger leads, you'll be dropping them on the take anyway so this system might not offer much advantage over a regular lead clip. Cheers, Matt

Hi Darren, sounds like savage liners to me. You could add some kind of indication to tell you whether you've been done either on the lead system or on the rig, I have that on all my rigs so that I know one way or another. Add a few cms of soft braid to the base of the swivel and then thread that up inside the run clip. If it's just a liner, you'll wind it back in and the braid will still be in place. If the braid has been pulled out, then you've been done.

@@ashington3212 I have used a setup like this in the past but having seen the horrendous mess that can happen when things go wrong, it’s not a setup I use anymore. I have used the run clips with a mono snag leader 0.50 and 12lb Bullet mono and that works great. If you need to stick with braid/fluoro combo, I’d stick to a regular lead clip and dump on the take, it’s the safest way.

Hi mate, If you can cast it that far, then yes, it’ll work. It's not as aerodynamic as a traditional lead clip because it's slightly larger so there will be a bit more drag. I can cast this setup a 100 yards but I haven’t needed to cast further so I’ve never adjusted my setup to achieve that range. If you’re boating out, it works great, the range doesn’t affect the function of the clip. Cheers, Matt

@@greglewis223 I use captive backleads a lot on the river because I have to but it’s better to fish without backleads if you can. They do compromise bite indication which is exactly what you don’t need. At that range, I would fish bow string tight lines directly to the lead with total confidence. If wind and undertow are an issue, bury your rod tips under the water. If boats are a problem, I’d use the lightest backlead I can get away with (15gr) and slide it out as far as it’ll go. I wouldn’t use a captive backlead with the Nash run clip. You’d have to use a heavy lead at the rig end to avoid moving it when you slide the backlead down the line. If you use a heavy lead with the Nash run clip, you’re going to lose a lead every time which defeats one of the goals of the product. The other option is to use a basic running lead with a large diameter run ring. Works great on regular mainline or if you need to fish with a leader. Hi mate, as I said in the video the Nash run clip doesn't work great with rig tubing. It’s one of the few downsides. If you can use a lead free leader, that would be better. Or fish it naked (subject to rules). If you still want to use the run clip with rig tubing you need to add a medium sized sinker (no bigger in diameter than the rig tubing) above the rig tubing. Then slide it down onto the tubing after you’ve attached your swivel etc. This will hold the tubing next to the QC swivel and allow the clip to run along it (kind of). Do not use the tapered tail rubber or it won’t run at all. It’s no good thinking that it’s okay for the line to run through the rig tubing. 10 minutes after casting out, the rig tubing will get gummed up with silt and start to jam up. Hope that helps. So most lakes I fish now require rig tubing and different venues require different lengths. The fact it doesn’t work well with tubing will be an issue. Especially in some of my venues have a total leader ban including safe zone .

I have these clips, I really like it , except the rubber bit which holds the clip's leg. It's quite small and it leads to losing too much lead, without snags. While they call it safe rig, I do not think dumping toxic lead into a lake would be something safe. After losing 9 leads in a day I had to use some heavy duty tape to fix it in place. Hi Antonios, totally understand why you might struggle with this one, there are loads on the market and I've tested loads. There's a big variation in quality, price and performance. The only one I use in my fishing is the Nash Skinlink. It's available in either stiff or semi stiff coating, it has a kevlar core which has great abrasion resistance. I use it a lot with a multi rig because you can re-use the material several times. Hope that helps, Matt.

Hi mate, haven’t got hold of one yet. Based on OMC’s videos and posts, for me as an angler, it’s not something that’s solving a problem in my fishing. I don’t fish lead clips and I already have an ‘auto-strike’ system: two solid bank sticks, a semi tight clutch and a running lead. On this channel, I advocate simple rigs and simple techniques. This is adding complexity to a rig and it’s another piece of tackle added near a carp’s head. As a lake owner, there are too many safety concerns on different levels, which I and other lake managers shared with Ali. There are safer alternative options I can help guests at the lake with.

How do you feel about lead clips that are very gently clipped in, so will prick straight away but by the time the fish is shaking head the clip has falled away from the swivel and become running? Also how do you feel about heli setups with say a foot between lead and top bead. In case something goes wrong, that setup can become very dangerous for the carp and it’s definitely not something I would want to see any anglers use at my lake. What happens tho when your fighting the fish ull have a big weigh in the middle of your line between u and the fish banging around since the lines tight ? Compared to inline lead that would just fall down to the swivel since your higher than the fish

Hi mate, the highest I’ve seen the clip up the line is 5ft. When the fish comes in close, the clip slides back down to the swivel. I always fish with a semi tight clutch which locks the clip on the line sooner nearer the lead. It's not an issue. Cheers, Matt

Interesting...only issue I have with this is if the carp initially slowly runs with the rig & gets a good few feet away before the lead locks in place, has intended, you are then playing a carp in essence on a really long hooklink with the lead locked & swinging a few feet away, like zig fishing, which with a 3oz+ lead isn't a pleasant experience, have you had any issues with this?

Hi, when the mainline breaks, the mainline will slide through the clip. The carp will then be able to get rid of the rig on a snag without the weight of the lead. This is even easier for the carp if you use barbless hooks, which I use exclusively. This is exactly the same thing if you’re using lead clips or a pure running rig. As a fishery owner and an angler, I have full confidence in this system from a safety aspect after fishing with it for one year. Cheers, Matt

Hi Matt, coming originally from coarse fishing, I really miss running rigs in carp fishing as they are simply unpopular or almost a no-go with my colleagues.Sometimes I think they are a bit narrow-minded, but on the other hand they catch a lot of carp, so I ended up picking up many of habits from them. This system obviously gives me the opportunity to fish "something like a running rig", with the option to lose the lead when things get critical. This is what I need! Hi Alex, Very interesting to hear your comment as always 😊 There are plenty of die hard carp anglers that love their lead clips and are absolutely convinced that they’re the best and only way to catch carp, I get it. I’ve spent 12 years here at my lake converting these anglers to running leads because they were struggling on lead clips. There are many other French fisheries that see exactly the same results! Good question… I set the drag so that the fish can comfortably take line but the rod won’t go in. Think of it in terms of slightly looser than playing tension. You want to make the fish work to gain any line. This locks the clip into place quickly, and then it’s game on. The clip slides back down to the swivel as soon as the fish is under the tip. In terms of line tension, it can be anything you want, slack, semi slack, back leaded, tight to the lead, it’s the clutch tension that’s key here. Cheers, Matt

Hi Mark, I wouldn’t use any type of clip inside a PVA bag, you’ve got too much going on. If you want to use a solid PVA bag, just use a running inline lead like I show in this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioGmp3iooax6kJI. The run clip works best with PVA mesh sticks.

Hi Matthew, I have never fished a running lead, always a clip as the situation has allowed. Most of my Carp fishing is in weedy waters back in the NW area, so I tend to use a Heli rig with a drop off system, I'd rather loose the lead than the fish!. I have just started fishing on a very silty shallow lake so I have just been to purchase some of the Nash clips that you're showing here. I am going to couple them with a light Trilobe lead. So am I correct that I should be using this system with a stiff mono?. I only use a slip D with a double 15mm bait, (bottom bait and wafter combo) What sort of hooklength would you recommend, if you dont mind me asking. Thanks mate 😊

Hi mate, you want to use a semi stiff hooklink material, not stiff like fluoro and not supple like braid. By choosing mono, I can select the diameter I need to give me the level of stiffness for each water I fish. Over silt, I choose 0.35mm mono, for better tangle resistance when casting at range, 0.45. If you like the slip D, then try my deadly d rig (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iKOXoZSLaqeSqJY) which is a mono version of the slip D. Rig length is 6 to 9 inches with a bottom bait. All the best 🎣

The problem with this bent design is that the clip stays in the place it originally slid to on the take until you land your fish. Which could be quite a way up the line. If you used a simple running rig it would slid back down on the flight and be near the hooklink swivel. Or am I missing something?

I found that by using a semi tight clutch the clip doesn't travel very far up the line (usually about 1m) and unless the lead has been ejected, I find it slides down next to the swivel when the fish comes in under the rod rip prior to being landed. I certainly didn't find it to be an issue either playing or landing fish and my hook to land ratio was 100% during the 12 months of test fishing I did prior to making this video. Cheers, Matt.

Hi, congratulations on your new PB! I’m afraid I can’t answer that question with 100% certainty because that’s not the style of fishing I do but I don’t see why it wouldn't work. The clip is strong enough for a lead of that size. It will be ejected on the take anyway but it will give that run effect initially which prevents the carp from throwing the rig out. Yes, you can use this run clip with any rig except a supple braided rig.

I would advise against it. The run clip will slide too far up the line and you’ll find it difficult to play the fish. Semi tight clutch and a solid bank setup works great.

No need to sell Nash products. You can make standard lead clips running by slightly squeezing the swivel. Works perfectly.

Hi Danny, I see what you mean and I know it’s promoted by some companies and anglers but it’s really not a good idea. In case something goes wrong, that setup can become very dangerous for the carp and it’s definitely not something I would want to see any anglers use at my lake. So let's assume you get a bite, the carp hooks itself. The carp starts to shake its head and move up in the water taking line through the running setup. It takes approximately 2 meters of line, not uncommon for a running system. You pick up your rod and tighten the line, meaning the system tightens itself and is no longer a running system.. Now you have a heavy lead (I use 3,5 oz) at 2 meters from your rig stuck on your line....Not as well thought out as it looks in my opinion.

Hi, I fish with a semi tight clutch, and this means the run clip locks on the line fairly quickly. The highest I've ever seen one rise up is about 1.5m. When the fish comes under the rod tip, and the line angle changes, the clip easily slides down to the swivel. It's not been an issue at all for me in my fishing, and I’ve used leads up to 4.5oz with it. Cheers, Matt

This looks really good. I don't like losing leads. I'm not interested in the cost, leads are only a pittance compared with the cost of the rest of our gear. I just don't like leaving stuff in the water that should'nt be there.
