I've been loc'd 7.5 years and my favorite shampoos are Design Essentials' Oat Protein and Henna shampoo for clarifying and Moisture Retention Honey Creme shampoo for moisturizing. I do use conditioner and I have since day one of my loc journey. It's the Rosemary and Mint conditioner also by Design Essentials. It's water soluble and I haven't had any issues with it. My skin doesn't like most oils, so conditioner is a necessary step to help my locs retain moisture in between washes.

I am new on my journey and I do not like oils so far. I also don’t like shampoos that strip my hair of their natural oils as that also creates dryness and itchiness so that doesn’t make sense to me. And I hate that everything smells like eucalyptus, peppermint tea tree oil I just want something mild and that smells good

I have been locked with my sisterlocks 11 years on 1/23/23. I still to this day do not use any conditioner. My sisterlocks are still shiny, bouncy, lightweight, so you don’t need to get conditioner in your locs. I am excited to continue to listen to the rest of your video. I’m currently 3 mins in.

Personally, I believe that African peoples of the diaspora should be supporting black-owned hair care companies. Clairol, Pantene, Suave, etc. are not dependent on black people to stay in business But black companies need the support of black people to stay in business. Also, one reason Herbal Essences shampoo irritated your scalp is due to the presence of palm oil. I have seen some petitions against the product since forests are endangered by companies that cut down forests to extract palm oil.

Thank you so much!!! I was ready to throw the towel in with these sisterlocks just shy of 3 months. I was given Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo and my scalp from the front to the middle was white. When I moved around I thought it was snowing.😂 I went to KZbin and viewed your video and you saved my locks. I purchased the Sauve shampoo and immediately saw the difference. My scalp is clean minus that awful buildup. Again, thank you so much.

I hate that suave isn't in Canada anymore. I use a neutralizing shampoo that I get cheap at Sally's. It's under $3.00 CAD. I also use the neutrogena anti-residue and the Live clean acv clarifying shampoo. I learned the hard way not to use conditioners in locs. I use henna and indigo and have to use conditioner after, so I dilute the conditioner with water or aloe vera juice. For scalp issues, itching etc...I use aloe vera juice/gel, the type you can ingest. I get it at wally world or the health food store. If you're not allergic, try it. It's the best moisturizer that I've found and it doesn't build up. If you're allergic, try distilled rose water, I would add silk protein powder to increase the moisturizing I will pass along what I learned about essential oils and storage. Do not store any EO mixtures in plastic unless it's in a HDPE or PET bottle as it can cause the plastic to leach. This is why essential oils are usually in glass or aluminum. I learned this from soap making sites. So I don't use plastic for storage, I use glass. I use glass vinegar bottles for applying oils to the scalp. I just add it to a cup of hot water and you have yourself a quick hot oil treatment. I prefer warm oil on the scalp, especially JBC. So save those brown bottles and re-use.

I don't wanna use conditioner because I don't want my baby locs to unravel. I didn't think about the build-up problem in terms of conditioner. I only thought about the build-up that can come from too much gel, butters, or wax.

I have interlocked 4point to 2 point rotation. Locks from 8 to 12". Type 3c to 4a pretty much kinky straight hair with pretty fine straight hair on the perimeter. My locs are less than 6 monts and except for the perimeter they are locking up nicely. I tried quite a few shampoos ( i dont condition or use leave in conditioner) the two products that i like the best on my new baby locs are Carol's daughter goddess strength fortifying shampoo for weak hair and i only use the Moroccan treatment light oil for fine hair alcohol free. The shampoo does not strip my hair yet it leathers, hydrate and cleam my hair so well. I have so far no buildup, no dry hair and its silky but not coming loose. This is a winning combination for fine new locs.

Re: build up, if you’re thoroughly washing your hair on a regular basis, (for me that’s once a week) how much buildup could someone possibly have? The other thing is cream conditioners will naturally leave build up, water based leave-in was suggested by a beautician on another channel En Toi, o know everyone’s hair is different, but that’s working for me... leave-in conditioner on my locs was a game changer & I still was weekly, and I wash the shaft of my locs as well...

Great video! ☺️. I’m going on 7 years loc’d & my all-time favorite shampoo is the Sienna Naturals HAPI Shampoo. It’s a great balance between cleansing & moisturizer without stripping hair but still clarifies and cleanses the scalp. Prior to finding that, Kinky Curly Come Clean was my favorite staple shampoo. I’ve never used conditioners in my hair & early in my journey I dabbled with lightweight leave-in moisturizers but never found one that was worth keeping around. Be blessed! 🥰🙏🏾
