What's your best small capacity, beginner adventure motorcycle for 2024? Front-runners certainly seem like the existing KTM 390 Adventure, with newcomers including the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450, and CFMOTO 450MT.
All three models offer impressive load-outs in 2024, with the KTM looking the most proven machine, but not having to defend its title against the well endowed Royal Enfield and Himalayan.
Here's a run down looking at the main features of the three bikes and seeing which comes out on top for 2024.

Great comparison mate. Enjoyed it. I think that one of the crucial factors will be the price. All bikes look very nice, offering similar performance, but are in the same time quite different in features and price. :)

100%, price is a huge factor on this kind of machine and will likely re-order the bikes in many rider's minds if there's a large enough difference. I think that's where the CFMOTO and Royal Enfield have some room to take advantage.

They're really quite heavy for a beginner , surely there's a way to get the weight down toward 150 kg similar to CRF300 rally ?
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 6 ай бұрын
It seems like that's really hard to achieve on the adventure bikes, compared to the dual sports. The CRF300 Rally has a huge advantage there, primarily off-road. It trades that off on the tarmac for being significantly taller, which for some riders may be more of an issue, as well as less powerful, and won't have the same level of highway cred, even if it is capable. So I think it comes down to where and how you're riding, and which area you'd prefer the emphasis on, or the advantages.

RE and CF Moto are both interesting to me, the KTM however I am just not into it aesthetically or riding/standing position for off-road it just does not work.

I feel like taller 'bars would help the 390 ADV as I always ended up super crouched over on it when standing on the bike, but the styling doesn't do a lot for me either. My least favourite of the three there, but that's subjective of course.

Pretty sure the tall dirt bike style fender is an accessory, as the pictures with it are the decked out/accessorised bikes.

I think the 450mt would be smoother on the highway than the other thumpers. Having said that,, tire choice is & will always be the contributing factor. Its a bit more road bias.

I think what many are missing so far, is the ease of modifying the respective bikes..🤔 We all know that sooner or later, one starts to "adjust" one bike to ones preference, however, the costs & gains that can be gained by modifying, depends a lot on how the bike is originally designed.. This is an area where I think the RE has significant advatages.🧐 In it's original guise, it uses a fair number of parts made of relatively heavy materials (probably to keep unit cost down). That means one could relatively easily get significant performance gains by installing parts made of lighter materials, which would be a relatively easy cost effective way to increase performance of the bike. Also worth keeping in mind that the RE is certfied to carry 198 Kg btw, so if you might need to occasionally carry a heavy load, RE has that covered.🧐

We're sure to see an enormous range of accessories and modifications designed for the Royal Enfield too, which should eclipsed those available for both other bikes.
@urastus9202

to summarise; the enfield has a lot more heavy stuff on it? I'd rather get a bike where they've already tried to keep the weight down. Consider later model cb500x; honda shaved some weight from the wheels. Generally the most viable weight saving is the exhaust, and when the time comes for a new battery, go lithium. You'll end up paying so much more for the enfield to get it to the standard of other bikes.
@MotoJournoKris

There's no weight difference between the new Royal Enfield Himalayan and the new Honda NX500. Both heavier than the CFMOTO by 5-6 kg. The KTM looks the lightest although it's harder to find a kerb 90% fuelled figure with them and they aren't particularly transparent with proper wet weight figures. @@urastus9202

Tiger 660? I joke, but I honestly do wonder if there’s much point in these small adv’s really? They’re not exactly built for the highway and apart from promo vids I never see them in any kind of dirt. Are they just commuters? I guess that makes sense. But yeah generally the 7-800 size seem to be a better buy to me, maybe I just don’t get it lol
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 6 ай бұрын
They do seem to fall into that generalist role. They should all be good commuters. I find the KTM a bit buzzy on the highway, but it is capable, I think the CFMOTO would be better there, and I'd guess the Himlayan being a bit more relaxed may handle that better too, although will have to ride one to see. The 700-800s move into that more 'proper' adventure territory though, and many are good tourers in comparison.

lots of folk have been riding 470's (cb500x) around the planet - including off road tour companies. Coming from a 990 motard tourer I was amazed with the 500x - it's just a lot more nimble at adventure stuff, commuting etc, and easier to live with. I used to ride a cb125 (10hp, 3" travel) more places than those pseudo adventure riders on their behemoths - none of whom I ever saw anywhere interesting. Consider long way round and those ridiculous bmw's; the camera man's beemer broke down, so they bought him an mz250 (ancient russian 2 stroke road bike) from some market they were near. That dude had a ball and did everything so much easier, for a fraction of the cost.

@@urastus9202ah people ride around the world on a postie bike… it’s still not the best choice for 99% of people. I know the Honda 500 platform VERY well having put more than 100,000km’s on a cb500f, it’s about as small as I’d go for an adventure bike you want to tour on. If you want a lighter bike for the dirt, sure but hardly any of them do any more dirt than unsealed roads and then what you actually need is tyres. Cb500x is fine… if you’re commuting. Purely for long touring and such? Just get a bigger bike, it’s so much easier and they have all the features you actually want on such a bike. The transalp would be amazing but I feel the gen 2 in a couple of years will be a big step up. There’s a reason all tourer bikes have big twin engines tbh. Yes you can tour on anything, and I have, but if you’re buying a bike for a specific task, buy the good one. If you just want the ADV style of course, just buy whatever you like

The KTM being the more established brand will likely be most popular , but if the cfmoto can prove itself to be a desent reliable bike , it will outsell both the ktm & royal enfield. At least until kawasaki upgrade their versys 300 to the 400 ninja engine

Here's a question: we know how strict the Aussie Gendarmes are on traffic, like not parking on the right hand side of the road, etc. How did you get away with a race exhaust on the Tracer 700? Is that just something that they don't give a toss about...
@MotoJournoKris
@MotoJournoKris 5 ай бұрын
Exhausts it really depends, I've never had a problem but have rarely run anything obnoxiously loud. But there's also plenty of stories of people getting defected for literal standard/OEM exhausts. There's the attitude test which some people fail, and sometimes people just get a HWP officer having a really bad day. Parking you're more likely to be done by parking rangers. Doing stupid stuff on the roads, I'd say they are most strict about.
