@Beridze 1997 KJV is probably the worst English translation. The NKJV is a vast improvement, but no translation is prefect. This is the root of the biggest issue I have with Islam. A translation of the Qur'an isn't the Qur'an. Therefore unless Arabic is your native tongue, you can never read the Qur'an as you would just be translating in your head and thus reading a translation.

@@jayjaykay111 Think about this... God is ( amongst other things ) the ultimate supreme mathematician. The Bible is full of numerology. 7 for example is the number of completion, 3 the number of the trinity, 6 incompletion, and 666 the mark of the devil etc ... . If you were God , would you have 73 books in your Bible, or 66? Incidentally, Jesus quotes from the Apocrypha ( Deuterocanological.l books ) MAT 23:37 and Luke 13:34 .... 2 Esdras 1:30 ALSO in 2 Esdras 7:28 you can read a clear prophecy of Jesus.

@Benjamin Eby I’m coming back to Christianity and I understand that the trinity is widely believed as part of the faith, but I’ve seen many argue that the trinity is not mentioned in the scripture and that the Trinity is a doctrine that evolved under the influence of the Roman Catholic Church and so wasn’t a doctrine believed by the early Christians. Not here to argue I would just like to hear the reasoning for the trinity’s existence as I don’t wish to commit heresy

@@KillerofGods hi there, I’m not concerned about the trinity anymore. God is indeed beyond our human comprehension, the trinity is only illogical if God is confined under our human rationale and this is something I’m glad God had me realise after I made that comment. I appreciate your answer regardless. My only issue is denominations, I’m not interested in Protestantism it’s either Catholicism or Orthodoxy for me if I have to choose. I was on the path to converting to Orthodoxy due to certain issues I had with Catholicism such as Papal infallibility and the Filioque, but recently I’ve kinda heard good arguments for the existence of these theological beliefs. I'm 16 and I currently have a girls life application Bible (NLT). I have a very old hardcover KJV Bible which I first used when I got saved since it was the only one I had (it had been in my garage and we have had this Bible for YEARS) the first time i opened that Bible I was like "oh no" I didn't understand it and I wasn't really connected to it. My friend who had told me the Gospel gave me a Bible (the NLT one). It was the same one she was using(I actually went to her house to pick it up😂😂I needed it ASAP) and it was MUCH better. I could understand it and it gave you practical situations and gave scripture on how to go through certain situations (I'm a teen so a lot of the scenarios are things that have actually happened in my life) I love that Bible, but this Christmas, I'm getting a pink imitation leather NKJV Bible because although I do love NLT, I have always had a feeling that the type of language that KJV uses will make it a lot more easier to create accurate images in my head to help me go along with what I'm reading and I chose NKJV because I heard it is easier than KJV which is perfect. Also I got it in imitation leather because my NLT one is paperback so I feel it won't last as long as I want it to. I will keep my NLT for reference, but the NKJV will definitely be my main Bible (I even got rainbow tabs for each book in the Bible😆😆) I'm really excited for it to arrive (I got it on Amazon)

I enjoyed your jaunt through the Study Bibles. I had a friend who worked at a Christian Book Store who was in charge of getting rid of the defective books. He would bring me Bibles rather than throw them out. Anyway I ended up with tons of these extremely expensive Bibles, many of which had some very minor flaws and miss spelled engraved names on them. BTW the youth group kids loved using the defective Bibles just to try to discover what was wrong with them. You'd be amazed as how many times pages in books are printed out of order. Anyhow it took me a couple of years but I decided it was too overwhelming to use all these study bibles. I pared back to what I call just a bible. I grew up with RSV so I like NRSV, plus it's what our pew bibles are and I like the readability of NLT. When I do a read through the Bible Study, like Disciple Bible Study or the Grand Sweep, I recommend getting a easy to hold easy to read Bible and encourage people to get into the narrative first. Church teachings tend to give a micro verse by verse view. What most Christians lack is the big picture macro view of the Biblical narrative. Note: the Bible Project does an excellent job of giving this macro view. Once again an excellent great job on the video! I'd love you to review e-bibles, both desk top and phone versions. I've also found that there are some amazing web Bible resources that almost render the $75 Study Bible a waste of time. I think there are some basics that people ought to know, like what Strong's numbers are and the TWOT & TWNT abbreviations. I have to confess that Google has made my concordance a book that just sits on the shelf as normally I just type part of a verse and boom it's there. Thanks again!

So when I was a kid we went to church every Sunday and youth group Wed Nights. I fell out of practice as I grew older and have now been out of the church for many years, though I've always carried faith. The recent passing of my mother has proved to be the most spiritually profound moment of my life as I sat by her deathbed, reading scripture from my phone and telling her to go with the angels, which she did. It was only the two of us and it was so peaceful, serene and deeply moving. So here I am in my late 30s and have never actually studies the bible. I had a small KJV I carried to church years ago, and never gave any time to study outside of church. You should do a video on the pros and cons of study bibles. IMO it’s pretty easy for the cons to outweigh the pros if the reader isn’t informed enough to distinguish what doctrines are being spoon fed to them right beside the scriptures. (Granted that this is already taking place to a lesser degree with any translation).

Nice review. Another one you might want to review in the future, if you haven't in a previous video, is the Lutheran Study Bible (Large print version) by Concordia Publishing House (cph.org). Completed my first full reading of the Bible this year using this Bible and thought they did a good job with the study notes and previews to each book. It has a 4.5 rating on Amazon (712 reviews), 78% being 5 star, 9% 4 star. (This version should not be confused with the Augsburg Press' Lutheran Study Bible.) Btw, I have read complaints about the normal sized Bible having the pages bleed through. Much more advisable to get the large print version.

My wife and I read Robert Alter's Hebrew Bible at meals, which does a good job at translating biblical poetry and expressions in a way that reveals their literary beauty. We are currently at Isaiah and it really shines there. It does get difficult to read at points, but that's where the translation notes help by informing us "the Hebrew is confused here" (which is not actually that helpful 😆). Other translation notes are informative though, and help you get an even better sense of the Hebrew text than the translation itself already does. Recommended if you like beautiful language!

I have the NRSV Cultural Background Study Bible and it is definitely a secondary Bible and not a primary Bible. I use it when I have questions about what I am reading like, "What on Earth is the Leviathan?" in which case the Cultural Background Study Bible not only has an article about that, but also shows artifacts depicting the Leviathan. ESV Study is a great all around study Bible and perfect for someone who wants just one study Bible who is maybe a New Calvinist or Evangelical Calvinist. Personally, I think Study Bibles that notes are complied by a single pastor are great for people who listen to that pastor's sermons a lot. I have a MacArthur Study Bible (NASB) and that is my number one study Bible. However, they have to be a pastor you really like or else you are going to find yourself more arguing with the notes than getting value out of them.

@martytu203 жыл бұрын
@@kellymaret1795 The earliest written account of Jesus' resurrection was 20 years after Jesus in 1 Corinthians. 20 years is as recent as it gets in antiquity, especially with believers whose background has a strong oral tradition. 40-70 years after Jesus isn't far enough that myths and legends start to prop up. That isn't to say that legends and myths of Jesus didn't prop, because numerous epistles released in the 2nd and 3rd century showed numerous legends concerning Jesus.

Orthodox Study Bible is a must not because of extensiveness of notes but the theological, church history point of view that's unique, also unique at the other side of spectrum is the REV translation (free app)that comes with notes (this one will flip tables and you might be scandalized). Also the companion series of commentaries for the orthodox study bible are gems. One volume or two volume commentaries are great. A great thing of study bibles is to open a few different good ones with a different theological approach at the same time in a table, if you are not married with one you can benefit much from clearer interpretation of a given passage from other tradition.

I've personally been using the Filament Bible as my morning/evening Bible for about two years now. It's not my favorite translation, but it's definitely simplistic/clean enough in terms of presenting the Scriptures, while also allowing me the study and extra information if I don't mind pulling up the app on my phone. It should be noted that potentially the best part about the Filament Bible is that it's not a static study Bible. While the others, once printed, have to have a new addition to add additional notes, for the Filament Bible these new notes can be added with little-to-no additional effort and be available to those who have this version instantaneously. This means that they can add videos that you can watch as they become available/popular. That means that, if the Tyndale wanted to add a Podcast section (*cough* they should *cough) then it'd be easily implemented.

Nice video! At first I was bummed this came out a week or so after I just got the bible I bought online, but I'm glad the timing worked out the way it did. Personally I bought that NIV life application study bible you have to your right in the video based on a couple reasons... 1. When I was cookie cutter shoved through the church as a kid I got a kid version of the 1980-whatever edition of the NIV so right out it seemed familiar. I mean they literally never used it in that church as anything more than just a weird token from some right of passage I never got a foundation it knowledge for, but it seemed like a good easy mode version to go with based off reviews online. 2. I saw you talk about it in another video of yours regarding study bibles and was like "oh hey...I remember hearing that 3 lettered abbreviation (NIV) 20 years ago! Why not?" Now that I'm in my mid 30s and am working on becoming a Christian I got to say it's been an AWESOME book. Yes, it does leave out a lot of the deeper academic stuff out I'm sure, but for anyone that fell out of the church, or in my case got excommunicated (not-so fun story there), and ran to the wolves I think it's a good jumping back in point. So I started with it and your recommendation of Mark, Acts, Colossians (for impatient people haha!) and it's been able to light a fiery passion to want to cultivate Christianity into my life for the first time. Sorry that's a really long way of saying... "Oh cool! I see my Bible on the screen!"

I had a whole library and got rid of them all [burnt them] but the real bible, the good old KJV 1611. All those bibles have purposeful errors and also need to be different to have a copyright. Satan hates the word of God. This is war! Now watch the deceived defend this great compromise.

The only other Bible I own and it is my first Bible as a kid is King James which I pick up once in a while to remember my youth. It wss the bible used in the 70s and 80s growing up where I was born. The NIV and NLT have never been translations I was drawn to especially NLT. Though many pastors I know love the NIV. I don't think I have ever seen one in a Catholic or Episcopal / Anglican church.

So this is more a comment on one comment that it is good to be able to put yourself in the shoes of the culture in which the Bible was written. It’s not a Bible but worth reading. Dorothy Sayers wrote a series of radio plays called “The Man Born to Be King.” It isn’t scripture or commentary in itself (although the appendix mentions some notes on passages and reasons for artistic choices), but it helped me see the gospels in the light of people who were there experiencing Jesus for the first time and I went back and read the gospels again with new eyes. For most Christians and much of western civilization we know who Jesus is or is said to be, but reading through these plays I felt like I was meeting Jesus again for the first time and slowly discovering that he is not just a man like any other. Once again, it is not a commentary. It is an artistic work with certain artistic choices, but it can put you in a mindset as though you were one of the disciples going from fascination with an intriguing man to worshiping God made flesh and living among us.

I'm listening to Father Mike's Bible in a Year podcast every day and have a New American Bible. Very surprising how different the NAB is compared to the RSV-CE which seems more abstract to me. Needless to say, with as quickly as Father Mike reads and the difference in translations, it's been difficult to follow along.
@nottiredofwinning37363 жыл бұрын
@@aureumursa1833 Yeah, a lot of Catholics I know aren't too crazy about the NAB - a lot of people complain about the footnotes in particular. There's a lot of them, and sometimes they diverge a bit from Catholics theology and/or take too many liberties with interpretation. As I prefer the NRSV-CE translation, the footnotes are actually the only reason I crack open my NAB - when taken with a grain of salt they offer some pretty interesting perspectives. The reason my Great Adventure Catholic Bible is my go-to, however, is not just the translation, but how they've implemented a color-coding and graphing system to present the Bible in a way that can be understood chronologically. For me, knowing where each book falls, and its relation to the others - it really helped me reach a deeper level of understanding.
