I’m not a backpacker, but my prefer lenses are the Sony 18-105 F4, the Sony 10-18 F4, mainly because those have OSS, and the Sigma 16 F1.4. The new Sony 16-55 F2.8 is nice, but too rich for my blood. I rather sell everything and go A7SIII than buy that lens, but if I can find a used one cheap enough, I might get one, but I kind of like the 18-105 power zoom better, plus it works great on a gimbal since the lens doesn’t extend when you zoom, and you can zoom it with a remote.

Even though I am two years removed from when this video was actually posted, I’m thinking seriously of upgrading to the a6600 from my a6400, simply because the battery situation in the a6400 drives me out of my mind. I either have to buy the expensive OEM batteries, or deal with any other battery that swells within three or four months, and almost gets stuck in my camera. I have the Tamron 17-70, and some other great APSC lenses, I’m about to shoot a feature length film, by myself, do you still think the a6600 makes sense? I’m thinking the stabilization will be pretty awesome combined with the Tamron 17-70, but I also know that it’s nothing like Panasonic. I have a Weebill S anyway, so it really doesn’t matter. Anyway, sorry for this long comment, but I find it pretty amazing that I ran into this video right now, as I am thinking about selling my a6400 and grabbing the a6600. By the way, I bought my Tamron 17-70 all because of you, it’s all your fault. And thank you for that. I love that lens. Combined with some vintage lenses that I have, I really love the look that I get, even in 8 bit. Thanks again, for a great video as always .

Thanks! And sorry for the late reply. The ibis in the a6600 is really just a light vibration reduction. The a7s3 however has a much more effective stabilization when in active more. Upgrading from the a6400 to a6600 is a hard call. For me the better battery and ibis make it worth it. But just barely. Glad you enjoy the 17-70! Awesome lens.

Hey Chris, regarding 3:03 not being able to see the screen from the mic. You might know this already, but there is an option to see the screen and use an external mic, and it is by mounting the mic on an L-bracket, and then the mic will be on the side of the camera and the screen would be visible in selfie-mode

Highline is a great film if anyones wondering! I'm currently using a GoPro set to linear, and I do OK with it. Lacks any real nighttime shots, and everyone loves a milky way or star trail don't they! I have an RX100, so that offers a bit more, but needs slightly more human thinking (the GoPro is pretty much auto everything!). I want a camera that does vlog style, landscapes, time lapses, night lapses, stabilised, flippy screen, good auto focus, mic input, good colours straight out of camera and a bit of zoom for the bear selfie. Oh lightweight too!

A cheaper but very good alternative for the Sony 16-55mm is the new Sigma 18-50mm. Little bit less in range but it also has f2.8 and provides really, really good image and video quality. Hi Chris, great vid! I would like to know how you stabilize some of the lens that don’t have the OS (like sigma 16mm). Did you use gimbal or most of the time just a static shot?
@OutmersiveFilms3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, many times I carefully and slowly do handheld shots, and stabilize in post for added smoothness. I never like to overstabilize as it creates too many weird artifacts. I’ve found FCPX inertia stabilizer works well half the time, and if that doesn’t work I use the stabilizer in Resolve which seems to work better, but the round trip workflow isn’t super efficient

Hi there! Much of it depends on the size of the room, and the look you’re going for. Chris, great video! I just happen to be thinking about cameras right now! I have an A6400 with Sigma 16mm f/1.4 lens and variable ND that I use sometimes (also have used Sony 24mm f/1.8 which is great!), but a bit heavy for me so I normally take my RX100Va for long trails. Couple of questions and comments: 1) Do you have any suggestions for audio settings with the A6xxx series? 2) You can solve the problem of the mic blocking the flip-up screen with the Smallrig adapter www.adorama.com/srbuc2317.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwqpP2BRBTEiwAfpiD-9BLbYEc-1_46rnhDVaWkK-CffOsL7EDvzb9t6iKMg6DUL9bhvBOqRoCMYUQAvD_BwE& 3) What did you use to transport your camera on the trail (multipack?) 4) What are your thoughts on compact APSC cameras with fixed lenses (like the new Fuji X100V)? Always looking for a lighter, more compact system. Thanks!
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! For audio, I turn off all the wind reduction settings, and ALWAYS manually set the input volume. (I map that to custom key 2). Aim for a good input signal without clipping. I usually look for 75% average on the meters. I’ve tried nearly all the carrying methods, and the best by far is the 2.9 oz Zpacks multipack. zpacks.com/products/multi-pack?aff=31 I’ll be doing a vid on carrying stuff soonish. As for fixed lens cameras...I personally prefer the option to change lenses given that I do it so much. Every trip I’ve got different lenses with me depending on what I expect to capture. But I’m kind of a lens geek. ;)
@BackpackingVideos4 жыл бұрын
@@OutmersiveFilms Thanks! Do you always check audio levels for each time you use the camera? I need to start doing that. I'm also using the Rode Video Micro--it's a compact setup. Yeah I think I'll get the multipack. Been looking at fanny pack options, but I think the multipack would be more stable...I probably stick to my A6400 for now, but I'm curious what you think about the A6600 vs. A7sii if I were to upgrade? The A7sii is just a tad heavier than the A6600 and not much more expensive. With a 35mm f2.8 lens, you could have a pretty compact setup and full frame. Thoughts?

Really great information! I have a Sony ZV1, and am thinking about an upgrade. However, I HATE the little ring on the back. For example, if I want to use it for manual focus, I change the function to use the ring, start to dial it, but then I end up pushing too hard, and suddenly start changing the aperture or something, because pushing the ring (at the top, bottom, or sides) engages a different function. It looks like the Sony A6500 and A6600 have the same ring. Did you find that a problem at all (apparently not)? Thanks!
@OutmersiveFilms3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, we were actually in Alaska shooting our next feature length film up there! I personally don’t mind the dial ring. I set mine to adjust aperture, then tap right to adjust ISO. The only thing that bugs me is the dial on top of the camera is set to shutter speed and I can’t find a way to change it. I’ve bumped it by accident a few times and shot footage in weird shutter speeds that had to be junked.

Any reason why didn't use the sony 18-105mm f4?
@OutmersiveFilms Жыл бұрын
I own the 18-105, but find the 18mm focal length and f4 aperture slightly limiting. Especially on an apsc. An f2.8 brings in a lot more light, and 18mm isn’t quite wide enough for my taste. Plus it’s quite a bit longer in terms of size. That said, I did shoot most of the day scenes in Highline with the 16-70mm F4, which is pretty much a smaller version of the 18-105.

Great info. If I’m seeing vignetting with the Sigma 16mm with a filter, is it the filter or just me? (With A6500)
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Good eye. It’s not just you. ND filters on wide lenses are notorious for introducing vignetting. Thinner ND’s like the BW nano series (linked in description) cause less vignetting. Also shrinking your iris to F4 or higher helps dramatically. I like to factor vignetting into the composition. Sometimes it can help to isolate the subject and add a more cinematic feel. A subject with a dark background for example. Other times it’s distracting. Like a subject with a bright background, or a wide landscape. In those cases I use a higher F stop, or a slightly narrower focal length. The 16-55mm is great for adjusting that on the fly. For still photos it’s much easier to manage. Just remove your ND and shoot at a higher shutter speed to control light. You can also remove vignetting in post via Lightroom or photoshop pretty easily. Hope that helps!

Thanks Chris awesome information for the newbie! As for the fluffy mic in front of the flip up screen, I got a hot shoe/cold shoe offset for my mic and that solved the problem, but yes - not the best thought. I think Sony "solved" the flip-up screen with the A7C, but I am not a fan of flip out, though I know lots of vloggers love them (I always feel like I am going to break it off).
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Yep I picked up that small rig adapter. Works decent. The new A7siii I picked up has that flippy screen which is great, but yeah I’m also worried it could break off given the way I abuse cameras.
@MidsierramusingBlogspot4 жыл бұрын
Chris, what do you think about the new Sony A7C? full frame at about one pound.
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Hi there! I was excited for the A7C, but slightly underwhelmed after realizing that it’s near identical to my older A7III in terms of color and chroma sub sampling (8bit 4 2 0). The smaller size, improved AF and flippy screen would be nice, but to make good use of that camera I’d have to bring along slightly bigger and heavier full frame lenses, which isn’t worth it for me for 8 bit color. Sony tried to remedy that by releasing it with the little 28-60mm FF lens, but it has a slow variable aperture, so it’ll be useless after dusk and harder to capture a shallow depth of field. For general hiking use, I’ll stick with the similar size/weight APSC cameras like the A6600 for now since the lenses are smaller, lighter, and have a better selection. All that said, I ordered 2x A7SIII’s, which I’m super excited for. They’re overkill for most hikers, but for fancier film work they’ll be awesome!

How would that pouch do for carrying all of it? Or, is there something else you would recommend for quick access carrying. ( I also have the PD strap mount). And one last question, (sorry I haven't really done any serious filming backpacking for my channel so I am a little unsure) what did you guys do for power? I’m on the fence, I need portrait lenses. I currently have the Sony 85 1.8 and the Zeiss 16-70 4.0 on my a6500. I was thinking of getting the Sigma trio or should I sell my Zeiss 16-70 4.0 and get this Sony 2.8 lens???
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
The Sony 2.8 is awesome, sharp and versatile, and will perform better as far as autofocus. On the other hand, the sigma trio is super sharp and faster with that F1.4 aperture, so the Sigmas will be better in low light, and give you a shallower depth of field. If you’re on a run and gun shoot where you need to change focal lengths often, I’d go for the Sony. If you have time to change lenses and need better low light and shallow DOF, I’d get the Sigmas

Outmersive Films thank you so much for the feedback. Have you tried the 24-70 2.8 G-master and how it compares to this 16-55?
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Yep the 24-70GM is awesome, but HUGE and expensive. The Tamron 28-75mmF2.8 is my favorite alternative to that lens. Its much lighter, and only $879. The Tamron and Sony 24-70 are both full frame which is great if you ever move to an A7 series

Outmersive Films tamron...I need to look into that lens. Thank you

thanks for this! I was looking at these lenses and for a while I was torn between the 16-55 G or the sigma 16. I ended up getting the 16-55 G and the 70-350 G for telephoto just because of the zoom range but I am still thinking of getting the sigma 16mm for lowlight and need a prime lens. I was considering also getting the 10-18mm for ultra wide to complete all the ranges but I'm not sure if it's really necessary. Any suggestions if I were to get a final third lens, should I go for the ultra wide or get a prime lens? Thanks in advance

Hi there! If your priority is low light and milky way, the 16mm for sure. If you don’t do much lowlight, the 10-18mm is really useful at times. But it does have a fairly “GoPro” look to it. If you have a new iPhone with a wide lens, you can almost achieve the same wide look by using the Moment app to shoot at a higher bit rate and manually control exposure.

Outmersive Films thanks so much for the comment. I might just get the sigma 16mm then!

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I don’t know if I will switch to Sony from Canon, but a lot of your advice applies either way. Happy trails!

Canons new EOS R5 has some incredible specs! Kinda heavy and bulky for me though.

@@OutmersiveFilms I've been an advanced compact guy on my last two JMTs and the HST. I'm looking for a mirrorless interchangeable lens system. But I'm a bit hesitant to leave Canon's great menus and the lightweight compact form factor. You're giving me a lot to think about with these SONY models -- B&H will thank you for it ;)

Every time I think about buying more gear I refer to this video, and to your website. Very helpful and you produce some excellent content!

Thanks! Glad it’s helpful. We’re working on a new feature length film now that was pretty gear intense, so eventually I’ll add an updated gear list to the site. :)

@@OutmersiveFilms I'll be watching for it! Picked up an A6600 and the Sigma 16 a couple months ago. Headed to Germany in a couple weeks and I'm excited to use it!

@Montañero Paisa Not at all. Most of the time I had it on a Peak Design clip on my backpack strap and it was never in the way

I know right? Lenses are so much fun, but addicting. Before ya know it you’ll be selling kidneys. ;) Another option I haven’t tested yet is the Tamron 17-28mmF2.8. It’s cheaper and full frame capable too, but lacks the focal range of the 16-55. There’s also the little 16-50mm Sony kit lens that’s kinda “meh”.

Thanks for all these lens recommendations! It is definitely a big help to me in choosing some lenses for my A6600. Did you consider using the Sony 30mm F 3.5 macro APS-C lens vs the FE 50 2.8 macro? I wonder which would be better. They are both about the same size.
@OutmersiveFilms4 жыл бұрын
Hiya! I did consider it, but the 30mm focal length seemed like I’d have to pretty much have the subject touching the lens. The 50mm gives a little more breathing room. The 90mm is even better, but yeah too big for hiking.
